"Olaf Barthel developes the new FFS (FastFileSystem) of AmigaOS 4.
Doing that in a as optimal as possible way he needs data.

Data about the conditions of as many as possible Amiga partitions.

Thus he is able to collect them he has wrote a little program which determines the file sizes.
So these data may become representative if the program will be distributed as much as possible.

Because of that I decided to put this program on my homepage for download.

***Please directly send the data to Olaf***
(please read the documentation before!).

The last possible data for sending in it is the 16.06.2002.

Please do not send any reports after this day.
This day is the deadline and then all reports which I has got up to this date will be analysed.

Please join numerously..." http://cattaneo.de/soft/sample_dir.lha

Souds to me as though he's wanting to discover the optimal
block size.

I'm puzzled. Why didn't Olaf post this request to the OS4 mailing list?
I'd like more proof of it being a genuine request from Olaf before sending possibly-unwanted files to the poor guy.

In reply to Comment 3 (anarchic_teapot):
It's real alright.
No idea why Olaf didn't post it there, I did suggest it to him.
Probably slipped his mind.

In reply to Comment 4 (Ben Hermans/Hyperion):
He actually did post it to OS4LIST but he wants as much people as possible so
the results of the poll are more accurate.
20-30 OS people are a bit less then 500 AMiga users :)

Is OS4 going to have a journalling filesystem like ntfs ?

In reply to Comment 7 ([JC]):
well FFS2 will not be a journaling
and the question is if it's worth developing something like that
(there are better/newer than journaling now)

In reply to Comment 7 ([JC]):
Journaling will not be a part of FFS2. The primary goal of FFS2 is backward compatibility with FFS partitions. Journaling would not allow that goal and thus is not a part of the planned feature-set.

I've sent in my stats! It doesn't take long (well, I've only got a 2GB harddrive..).
It creates a histogram of the filesizes most prevailing on the system. Nice to be
contributing with /something/ anyways.
Most fun I've had all day ;-)

Maybe it's because there are more people in the whole community than on any ML :)

Well, SlimJim.
I guess he should already have mine, then. I've only got a 512Meg drive. ='D
Oh, yeah. I guess I should download the software first. ;-)

Surely looking at your *current* setup is a little short-sighted when you take into account that the new OS and hardware will open possibilities for things like video ?
Perhaps i`m missing something here, but generally the size of the data / apps on a system will only go one way - up !

virii?
WTF does that mean?
I know for certain that it is NOT plural for virus as virus cannot be a plural.
