Yes, the legal boilerplate isn't particularly well written but it's pretty clear that everyone is free to share copies of AWeb under this license. No need for keyfiles.

I'm right now in the process of polishing the source code and making it compile with gcc for AmigaOS. Later on I'll try porting it to AROS. Anyway, after I'll make it compile with gcc, I'll release the sources so modified somewhere. Don't hold your breath, though, as I don't have much spare time these days.

This is excellent news. Now if only we could convince the IBrowse and Voyager camps to follow suit and get -everyone- working on a -single- Amiga browser project, that would be awesome!
They could even set up a foundation for donations if they still want compensation for their work - I'm sure people will keep contributing.
We're too small a community to compete amongst ourselves. It's high time developers start 'pooling' their effort and code, or else we'll just keep falling further and further behind.
Still, KUDOS to the AWeb guys! =)

And yes, AROS is looking more and more like a professional OS as time goes on. In a few years it might start raising eyebrows over at Slashdot. If only Amiga had the foresight to see this coming, open source the AmigaOS, milk the publicity, encourage the Linux guys to come on over to our side...
Instead it's closed source, proprietary hardware, monopolistic practices. It seems Amiga are learning the wrong lessons from the wrong camps...

If someone is interested in porting it to AmigaOS, I would like to say "please do NOT waste your time". Remember the market is too small for several web browsers especially because these are huge projects. If you have spare time, work on plugins for Ibrowse, the standard web browser for AmigaOS4. So that you'll contribute to give to AmigaOS the best web browser of all times...
Of course, some pieces of code of Aweb can be used into Ibrowse. This is a great opportunity to gain time in using code already done (do not re-invent the wheel).

Does that mean IBrowse will go open source? Funny, the IBrowse list never mentioned that. Read the APL. The principle of releasing stuff as open-source is usually for the benefit of the community, not for the benefit of rival commercial developers.
I say AWeb should be ported and development continued by whoever has the skill and the time. A good FREE Amiga browser is long overdue and will provide a good kick up the backside for the commercial offerings, which will need to keep ahead to justify the price.
While the commercial developers still in the Amiga market need all the support they can get, the community must not allow itself to be bullied or blackmailed by them. Superior freeware forces commercial developers to produce superior commercial software or die. Small market as it may be, normal competitive conditions need to apply to stimulate progress while avoiding stagnation and complacency.

It's sad that Yvon Rozijn has put down the development of AWeb, the best Amiga browser IMHO. Releasing the AWeb source code under the AWeb license is far better than just let the source code to be forgotten.

I personally don't like AWeb. I would rather see PPC native Voyager or Ibrowse for the OS4. If someone is going to continue Aweb development then please give it decent MUI Gui, I hate Awebs default GUI.

that needs to be done since Aweb is still the prefered browser for those
of us that do not want to use MUI. At minimum there needs to be at least
2 viable browser choices, one for non MUI users and Voyger or IBrowse for

I never use Aweb during the past years (Ibrowse fan on 680x0, Voyager fan on MorphOs).

Thanks because who choosed Aweb as browser has got the possibility to see a new version of his software.
Thanks because this is one of the few example in the Amiga scene where a stopped commercial product is COMPLETLY donated to its community (in this list I'm waiting disperatly for WordWorth, FinalWriter, TurboCalc, FinalData, Datastore, Brilliance and the list can continue).

Before we get too excited- can someone with less of a splitting sinus headache than myself (hooray for allergies) do a compare/contrast job on the AWeb license vs. the GPL/LGPL that Mozilla should soon(?) be available under?
Derivation of anything from Gecko would probably require so much reworking as to fall under fair use (as in, the code would fail that old 'is it X% different?' test to determine a derivative work)... but it'd be nice to see some guaranteed license-compatibility so it wouldn't be an issue.
(That said, they may be compatible as it stands, it's just that it takes some serious headbanging to determine so, and I'm not up for it right now...)
