Because of very heavy lightning i Aalborg, Denmark the entire sunsite.dk machine is down. This afternoon there came a rainstorm over the northern parts of Denmark. Because of that, the entire sunsite.dk site went down. That means that the mailindlists and the webpage are down for the time beeing.

Unfortunately the UPS did not do it's job and the PSU in the server blew out. Sun has been contacted and they will bring a replacement PSU later this week (in a few days or so).

If you'd like to see how and where the lightning struck between 15:00 and 18:00 you can take a look at this picture from the Danish Meteorological Institute..

On behaf of the entire AWeb team,
Jens Dueholm Christensen <jens@amigadk.dk>

Yes, they even control the weather now. :-) Perhaps soon the entire Amiga offices in Snolaqmie will be sucked out into space by an interstellar tornado. Who knows?

Jens, two interests of mine are Amiga computer systems and meteorlogy so I really appreciate this update (including the reference to the map showing where lightning has struck)!
Although the news on Swedish TV4 didn't mention anything about the status of sunsite.dk, they did however show the aftermath of the rainstorm ploughing thru the north of Denmark (even spawning a few tornados along the way! Tornados in Europe are very rare, so this is quite spectacular!)
As I write this (tuesday, 23:30 CET) the weather system is currently situated over the southern part of Sweden, advancing to the north. At this point, it should still produce thunderstorms, however they may diminish in numbers as the system weakens. Hopefully, it'll still be active by the time it reaches my home town of Umeå, Sweden (if it gets here).
Again Jens, thanks for the update!

Hmmm, a few days sounds long, but I don't know what kind of SLA you guys have...

Well.. since the mailinglists are down I thought that people somehow should know.
Just for curiosity I've got a few more pictures for you then (way way offtopic, but still) -
this one and this.

They show the lightning from between 12 and 15 & 19 till 22..

In reply to comment 4:

Since sunsite.dk is SPONSORED by Sun they (yes, they - I'm not in any way related to sunsite.dk other than via the AWeb project and by the fact that I know a lot of the people running it) do not have any fancy SLA. They are working on it.

During the evening I've heard that the serverroom smelled burned, so as of right now they are hoping it's just the PSU and not something "more" important..

Not that they would have accepted it anyway, but *this* is why people use VA's SourceForge rather than rolling their own project site out of duct-tape. SunSites are nice, but they're run slightly on the cheap (ours used to fall off the 'net for days at a time and was eventually made more or less irrelevant by the rather fine mirror.ac.uk)

You can see in another thread why we didn't use SF for the project (something to do with the licence). It could as easily have happened for them as well - only when the human race are masters over wind and weather will such a thing be 100% preventable. Besides sunsite.dk IS a stable service and a much much more userfriendly service than SF or any other similar service available (if any?).
Besides we've got some time from the busy ML to get some administrative work done.

In reply to Comment 3 (Peter Eriksson):
Well tornados in europe are not so rare as people think. There is almost every summer some small or medium tornados in Finland. Those just usually happen in the areas where there is no much people or settlemts. By the way in many european countries tornados are actually called as trombi. Trombi is an local european tornado. According to Finnish weather agency there was 19 confirmed trombis in 1997 and about 10 trombis / year after that. Probably there was some more of those which were not seen. Eg. in 1999 there was a thunderstorm and a small trombi in center of city of Mikkeli it lifted a car in the air, rotated it and smahed it back to ground upside down. Couple of years ago there was also a trombi almost in the capital of Finland which is called Helsinki. I live there but didn't see it. There was a photo in newspaper though. So Tornados or trombis are rare in Europe, but they are not so rare as people think. Those just usually happen in the areas where there is no much people.

That thunderstorm wasn't too bad when it hit Gothenburg, Sweden, where I live, last night, but it took out my cable-tv and broadband internet.
Regarding Trombi (or Trombs as we call them in Sweden) I usually one or two every year, usually out over the sea, but they're nothing like tornados in the US. At best they can steal the laundry you've hung out to dry.

In reply to Comment 12 (Casper):
Well it depends, There appears wery small and big trombis. Ofcourse most of the european trombis are much smaller than tornados in the US, but there is some strong tornados here too. That trombi in Mikkeli showed. Biggest thing I know here in finland was 4.8.1932 (long long before i was born :) ) "4.8.1932 -The strongest Tornado Outbreak in Finland on the 20th Century! Some tornadoes were at least F3! The widest destruction path was 500 meters and the longest track 39 kilometers! In Nurmijärvi tornado killed a 17-year-old boy."
If you can read finnish then look at this. There is also a picture of path of that tornado outbreak.
http://www.saunalahti.fi/fmbb/storms/tornados.htm
By the way those trombis which start over water are not called trombi or tornado, those are called just as water pillar. those do not start quite the same way a trombi starts.
Tornado or trombi starts over dry land, water pillar start eg. at the sea.

Hello Peter!
Just wanted you to know that there is a Amiga Usergroup in Umeå (ACG, www.amiga-cg.se) who needs more active amiga-members... =)
I myself has just moved away from Umeå to Skellefteå (not enought Amigausers here to start a local usergroup here)... (maybe we have met?)
Anyway, nice to see Amigapeople in northern Sweden!
