Fancy having a go with the other official operating system for the Amiga? Commodore Amiga UNIX affectionately known as AMIX can be downloaded from this page. You may need access to a tape drive to install it.

I'm not so sure Amiga even own it. Rumor has it during the "big Amiga juggle" one of the previous owners formatted the developer machine that contained the source code by mistake (a PC), and it didn't get listed as an asset when the assets were sold.
Just a rumor I heard. I'd be curious to know the legal standing of Amix, and the story behind the rumor too if possible ;) |

Yes, maybe no one still owns Amix, but on the site they made a little mistake in offering download of something they must don't do...

The Roms? yea, I'm quite sure they're illegal, er well, not illegal, but copyrighted. I doubt the roms should be there.

I've actual knowledge of this particular case, but my guess is that if the actual ownership of AMIX is lost from the recorded Amiga stock, then the copyright reverts to those people who actually wrote it.
It's very rare that "lost" IP simply defaults to the public domain, and I doubt very much if that is the case here. It's highly likely that the publishing of AMIX on that website is an infringement of someone's copyright, but it is questionable whether it actually deprives anyone of income or if the copyright holder will actually take action against it.
The ROM images are probably a different matter. |

I wonder if it is possible to create a partition on the HD, setting the filesystem by assigning and mounting it as a fake tape stream in the mountlist...

Those are just the boot disks, not the actual Unix.
There is a script floating around that will let you install it from a HDD partition, anyone? |

I was thinking of a normal installation Amiga By And To Amiga...
I was reading a book some minutes ago and I realized it is a Unix Self Installation... (at least I think it is of that nature)
It is the entire Unix procedure to be changed or cheated, and then it must be cheated the device also DEV_HDE/HDG (but obviously HDxxx it is the conventional name for the HD) or whatever name it has...

The A3000 used two rom chips with one supplying the lower bytes and one supplying the higher bytes. The two rom files would need to be interleaved into one bigger rom file, and that would work fine with uae.
To your average "WHERE FOR TO GET AMIGA ROMZ K PLZ THX" kiddie though, they're useless. |

Amix will only run on:
A3000 and A2000+2630+2091.
While you could emulate the A3000/2091-SCSI-Controller if
you would add support for it to UAE, adding an MMU to the
CPU-emu would be an almost impossible task. |

Try downloading again, it verifies correctly here. I have a friend who's going to be tickled pink about this, she's been looking to replace the data on her old 3000UX tape for years! Splicing to no avail.

| Posted by RC on 23-Jun-2002 10:24 GMT | Considering it will only install and run on an A2500/A3000 I don't see any real issue here. Most of us with AMIX tapes are stuck with the problem of media failure. Tapes get old and the data on them dies along with them.
Other than that, AMIX (Amiga Unix, Unix V 4 for the Amiga Computer) is rather useless, and has many security holes...not exactly a safe OS to use for a server in todays world (Not to mention pointless: Apache exists for AmigaOS.) AMIX is, today, just a toy. Though it may be fun to play with a Unix CLI and an ancient version of X, it's not something you will want to use daily. Better stick to an Amiga BSD release if you want to do anything with Unix on your A3000, etc. |

Well I'd be surprised if Amiga Inc. even owned the copyright to AMIX. Infact the whole situation is totally blurry as to who does own AMIX, but with AMIX having probably next to no commercial value (if any) and the apparent loss of the source code I'd find it hard to believe that any action would be taken. Infact it's entirely possible that the true copyright holder doesn't even know they own the copyright. If nothing else, it'll help save it from bit-rot |

Yes it will work on Amiga's not specifically made for AMIX, because the UX designated machines where nothing much more that standard Amiga's which shipped with AMIX supported hardware, which is of course also supported under AmigaOS. There is probably a strict range of hardware on which it will work and it'd be interesting to find out. |

I don`t think anyone here is seriously suggesting that AMIX should be used as a modern server OS, infact I wouldn't use AmigaOS as a server OS but it's definately an interesting curiosity and a challenge for people to get working. Security regarding AMIX is a moot point if it's not going to be installed for public consumption. |

Amix archives to CD-ROM or something... provide it on the next Amiga Forever disc, even.

I put up the site on AMIX because nobody else had and I was trying to save it from fading from computer history. Outside of a select group of folks, most of the people posting here really don't 'get it'. As I have observed now, the Amiga Community just complains and flames each other thus making the community an unfriendly group.
Looking at my site and the comments I have read so far, I guess I should pull the Amiga 3000 SuperKick ROM files. However, at the time I was swept away with 'AMIX Fever' and maybe I should have given more thought to posting them. I thought having them in bin prom format would keep the UAE leeches from using them and would make legal Amiga folks happy. I haven't had anyone complain in the many emails I have gotten over the past 6 months or so, but I will probably pull them.
I guess I thought most Amiga fans would be happy that a group of other Amiga Fans took a great deal of time and effort to bring back a copy of AMIX for everyone to study, browse, and just re-live some history. I'm sure some of you will find this odd, but I actually felt gratitude towards folks like Richard and Matt who not only helped get AMIX and the support disks but also posted on how to write the files back to tape so you could install it if you had the right hardware.
