Yep, it was more than a year ago since we last saw one, but today is a day of celebration: John "Squid" Shephard has posted another excellent observation on the Amiga-related proceedings (and a bunch of other stuff). Get thee over to flyingmice.com.

Interesting, and the overall point is quite true.
It leaves me wanting to scream:
iMacSony Wega
AmigaCar Radio/Walkman/Discman/Game Boy/...
...but that's one heck of a mixed metaphor, so I've given up my attempt to say that on the Bunny. ;)
The way I look at it is... imagine the second generation of http://tao-group.com/2/tao/press/20013010-jvc.html - now say you've got an 802.11 card in it, and can broadcast direct-to-internet. Is that more or less 'creative' or 'enabling' than a Toaster or iMovie?

[yes, i'm off topic as hell, but i don't think amigaos or amiga at all will be what i would like it to be so i wanted to share my thoughts. i suppose we could discuss this in some other way if someone is intresting, or just ignore my post.]
Why don't knowone write an opensource gameing/multimedia os?
because all opensource projects is based around unix?
sure, beos failed, but it might have been different...
and if the os can be on a cdrom from which you boot both the os and a game companys could actually use it instead of windows because it works for windows users anyway... the problem with that is that it need programming tools which would probably never be built.
Then i started to use linux 6-7years from now it wasn't that good for regular users... but now most ppl could use it as a replacement for windows as long as they don't need games... the windowmanagers with "desktops", movieplayers, browsers, filemanagers and so on is already there.
Now adays i use openbsd instead of linux thought, and not all program will compile so that leaves me some time after linux development, but i like openbsd better anyway.
But i still don't think a non-networking os should be unixbased.
And i don't think i'm enough skilled to begin code an os... but maybe one does not have to be extremelly skilled for that, who knows, especially if someone else helps with development. Are there any good books on the subject?
What if amigaos had gone opensource directly after commodore went bankcrupt(spelling?)...

AROS is an Amiga like OS (a cloning effort actually) and is under a Mazolla (sp?) like license (justthe names have been changed to protect the innicent....)
and then there is UAE which is plenty available expecially seeings how it is part to the debian distribution.
So with AROS OSI compatable and cloning the AmigaOS, you certainly have the makings of Amiga ROM clones that can be used with UAE, to provide an Amiga IP free OS.
Of course this is a UAE emulation, but the full AROS is to be a full clone. Advantage of UAE is perhaps to be seen when the Hurd get's it's first official Public
release, as the Hurd uses IPC alot in it's design and the Amiga is well established as having a user accessible IPC interface.
UAE w/AROS ROMs running on the Hurd gives you access to all the Amiga software (that's been ported and this includes games) and all the GNU software so many know
from running GNU on the Linux Kernel.
The potential is there for having the best of two world and the freedom of OSI compliance.
Oh sorry, didn't mean to harrass you.

It's not.

Ok, AROS APL is from what I understand the Mazollia (sp?) MPL
and here is a listing at OSI of what Licences have been accepted.
http://www.opensource.org/site_index.php
Now maybe someone would like to point out where the APL doesn't fit?
I like to know, really.
There are reasons why things have evolved in the so called Amiga k/community as they have. In Fact there is a movie that was recently released for sale about the man who identified it. That Movie is "A Beautiful Mind" a story about John Nash. http://cepa.newschool.edu/het/profiles/nash.htm
http://www.math.princeton.edu/jfnj/
'When the 21-year old John Nash wrote his 27-page dissertation outlining his "Nash Equilibrium" for strategic non-cooperative games, the impact was enormous.'
If what has been going on in teh so called Amiga k/community (which includes even Amiga related business) isn't an example of ----- non-cooperative.....
Then .....
Then there is also:
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/StrategyLetterV.html
Which helps to point out the need for a common non-restricted ground for all to work from.
I think even Ralph (MorphOS) deep down recognizes the value of AROS in this compacity. And that includes how the success of AROS can effect MorphOS success in perhaps a negative way.
Far to many people spend to much time trying to knock me (Tim Rue) down.

While Amiga Corp dicks around with putting OSes on cell phones, Apple actually UNDERSTANDS digital convergence..
Hehe... Classic line.

In reply to Comment 6 (a):
I don't know, digital convergance could be taken two ways I guess. The first is that all your different bits and pieces communicate with each other (Apple). The second is that there is a single platform that everything runs and can interact (Amiga/Tao).
Personally, I don't give a crap, but it was an interesting rant :)

Having devices that can communicate with each other through standard protocols and methods and standard interfaces is MUCH more valuable to "digital convergence" than one proprietary OS running on multiple devices.
If this wern't the case, Windows would be considered the leader in Digital Convergance" :)
I think Amiga are trying to create a product hoping the market for it will just "appear."
Why not create the market first? Create a -reason- to need their product!

In reply to Comment 8 (TBone):
There already exists a good reason for Amiga's product (well, just about every product which contains some sort of binary compatibility across devices, such as Java, Tao, .net, etc, etc), but it's more for developers than end-users.
End-users probably don't care what system they use as long as it gives them what they want. Of course, if you have some really cool, must have exclusive apps/games users might take a bit more notice that the system they need is XYZ.

I didn't want an opensource AmigaOS, AmigaOS is simply to old and outdated. I would like to have a new one, with new ideas....
And i don't care if that and that application wont work, sooner or later there arive other ones.
