Update for GoldED Studio announced (first preview available here).

In a few days a final update for GoldED Studio will be released which combines the existing editor (release 6) with material from the aborted development of version 7: all-new graphics, an improved UI library and various updated add-ons. The package will include the Distributed BASIC interpreter with GPL'ed source code.

If that's a configurable background text color, then I'm sold!

Man, this is sad. Couldn't they wait to at least see if AmigaOS4 is a success before stoping the development?...

TheyHe and last i checked his main reason for stopping was lack of time! i wish he would sell the sources but he wants a 2 wild price.

I'm really glad Dietmar has decided to release the update he told me he had been working on (for a long time). I'm really glad he's implemented tabs into the top bar of Golded as this will make things so much tidier!
It is, however a REAL shame he won't be continuing development. I think its a real lose and it would have been great if GoldEd could have been integrated into OS4.0+ as the Os's editor (lets face it who ever got the hang of Mmecs (or whatever it was called) and Ed is just too basic for anything more than Startup-sequence editing!)
Thankyou Dietmar and I hope that some day soon in the Amiga's Future (YES there WILL be a future!!) you will come back and continue the great work you have been doing.
Many thanks,
Sam byford.

Text background color has been configurable for ages...

Well, with a massive 518 pre-orders to date for AmigaOne/AOS4 (i.e. less than 21% of AInc's first "free draw" target), I'd say you're in for a bit of a disappointment if you think that A1 is going to be a "success"!
However, many thanks to Deitmar for deciding to release this one final update to an absolutely excellent editor, most appreciated!

From the website, for those who cannot find it themselves:
> Discontinued
> 4/3/2002
> I regret to inform AmigaOS users that all software on this web site
> is now discontinued (due to lack of time on my side to continue with
> AmigaOS software development).
Note the date. Old news. (Has been here on ANN, too.)
And please note that he has developed under WinUAE for ages - and since AmigaOS 4 does not support being run in emulators of any kind, there would not have been any "GoldED for OS 4" anyways. (Hint, hint...)
One word on the price - he has created an excellent product, effectively the market leader for AmigaOS text editing. I can fully understand that he demands a good price for giving away the source code, after all he did put serious efforts into it. Releasing stuff under the GPL might be nice, but it's not like you are *obliged* to release abandoned source...

Not really: all previous versions have used pen 0 for background and pen 1 for text. It was possible to change the associated colors but that would have changed everything rendered with those pens (gadgets, dialogs etc). The main reason for using pen 0/1 was that in that case only one bitplane needs scrolling on OCS/ECS/AGA systems, and that translates into a massive speed advantage. The coming update allows to disable ECS/OCS/AGA optimizations and then you will be able to choose pen and paper color freely.

I had never used GoldED until today -- because I saw this news and went to the website, downloaded the free version 5 and... Wow! What a great utility! This is one of the nicest, most competent reconfigurable editors I have ever used anywhere. I am so impressed I may well be buying the new version, with or without continued development.
Please, Amiga, Hyperion, *somebody*, buy the source from the author or make it worth his while to continue. As someone said in another comment, this editor would be awesome supplied as part of the OS. But if not, the existence of it as a program developed for the Amiga (whatever your hardware) is surely worth some effort to keep.
It's a real shame when great tools fall by the wayside, or development swaps to a PC version. Anyone here who thinks Amiga can get anywhere without *good* software, think again.

???
How come I remember setting text *and* background to various colors for C++ syntax highlighting?

Sure you could change the background color for a syntactically highlighted element, but NEVER the whole text background area at once. Dietmar just stated that this is now possible in the current version. It is a request I've made of him for AGES.
Thanks again for adding it in.

People that do not change their opinion even when provided with proof of the contrary are called "stubborn". Regarding Amiga, I changed my opinion but once.
> oh man, stop talking so much rubish, it annoys me so much.
Then stop reading. And, by the way, get lost.

Another great feature, IMHO of course, is the support for different font style, I like StormEd for this feature, so the text is defined by three attribute: bg colour, fg colour and style, I like it for syntax highlighting.
Bye, Pietro.

Thank you, Dietmar !
It is a sad thing for me you stopped development, but I am glad you made
this last update available, inspite of your discontinuation of the product.
As it seems to me, your earnings will not grow anymore by releasing this update, still you did it.
That is great. :-)
