GoldED Studio AIX is the latest update for AmigaOS 3, replacing GoldED Studio 6. A beta version (demo) is available for downloading on the support site site at GoldED Support GoldED Studio Editor: Beta version available

GoldED Studio AIX is the latest and last update for AmigaOS 3, replacing GoldED Studio 6. A beta version (demo) is available for downloading on the support site site at GoldED Support, provided that the free web space providers don't kick the file from their servers because of its size.

The main purpose of this release is to have the software enforcer-tested (I have been unable to run tests with real Amigas, due to lack of such hardware).

Pre-ordering: The new GoldED Studio verison is on sale at a 25% preorder-discount during the betatest-week from 16/July to 22/July.

I bought GoldEd 6 on the understanding that GoldEd 7 was to be
freely available download for registered 6 users. What happened?

I'm not sure where you got this idea but certainly not from the GoldED web site. GoldED 7 was never planned to be made available as a download and it was never planned to be free for all GoldED 6 users. Why would I do that ? It's commercial software. However, it was announced at some time on the GoldED web site that if you buy GoldED 6 now, you would get a free GoldED 7 CD later. Since AIX has taken the place of release 7, that offer now applies to the AIX CD: if you bought at a time the offer was up on my web site (and if you are registered), the CD is free. The offer does not apply to purchases made before or after that period. Btw, the free CD offer is mentioned on the discounts page.

I bought my copy of GoldEd 6 from Software Hut at the first altWOA.
I was unsure whether to buy it because I was aware GoldEd 7 was "just
around the corner", but was assured by Software Hut that 7 will only
be a very small update and it would be a free download for 6 users.
I bought 6 on this basis only as I didn't want to find myself purchasing
7 a few months later. (As it happens though 6, has given me good
service because 7 has taken longer to materialise than anyone expected.)
I don't want to sound like I'm complaining because I'm not, but I find
it interesting that official distibutors of your software, have (in the
past) willingly mislead your customers.

Software Hut is no official distributor and has never has been one. I assume they didn't actually make that claim, did they ? No idea know they got your CD. Maybe quite old (GTi-produced CD, available to all dealers, not upgradable to later versions), maybe used. GoldED distributors of recent times (KDH, Vesalia etc.) are licensed for sales to end-users only. And they are required to take registrations for me at the moment of sale.

Quoting the website:
"Hardware requirements: 4 MB RAM and AmigaOS3, graphics card."
No OCS/AGA support at all? (Yes, yes, "upgrade your hardware, don't live in the past, etc." but it's a text editor, not a game or paint package!)
I'd happily beta test (and perhaps pre-order) if it would run on my non-gfx card machine.

It can run under OCS/ECXS/AGA with 640x400+ modes. However, with ECS/OCS/AGA there is just not enough screen space for that kind of user interface, not enough bandwidth for the syntax highlighting feature and not enough colors to render the graphics as intended. So yes, you can do it but you don't want to do it.

Not that this matters anyway, as I think the 59 euros
you are asking is perfectly reasonable.

Ah, but that's different. :) "Can" and "Want to" are different things in a hardware requirements list. I found the demo of GoldED6 to run rather nicely under AGA (with FBlit installed), and GE5 runs perfectly. If I can just have the patience to d/l the 17Mb archive, I'll be trying GE AIX.
BTW it is a real shame that this package developemnt has been stopped, it is a great bit of software. Will GE6 still be available for sale, should the new AIX prove unsuitable?

Hopefully, there'll be a smaller archive soon without spellchecking, that should have a drastic effect on size (like minus 10 MB). On the other hand, if you want to judge the spellchecking module, get it while it's there.
> Will GE6 still be available for sale, should the new AIX prove unsuitable?
What a shocker ;) I don't know. At his time, Vesalia still has some CDs. I, too, have some left. It's quite possible that there'll be a final sell-off.

Netfirms removed the file due to its size but it is still available at the private folder at aminet Paderborn, it just takes a while and some attempts to start. I'll gladly mirror it somewhere else if somebody can point me to free storage (for 17 MB) with no serious bandwidth limit. Tried ftp.wustl.edu, and they accepted the upload but now don't allow read-access. Go figure. The other Aminet sites don't seem to allow uploads to /priv at all.

I've got the demo and installed it. It does not want to run. It complains about missing 'standard.misc' which is not in the archive. Furthermore, none of the add-ons installed. This may be because of the 'demo' status for all I know. Anyone have any clues about the 'standard.misc' missing file problem?

If you think that is not in the archive, something is wrong with your unzip or the downloaded zip file. I don't have an Amiga, winzip was used for the archive integrity test. There are 3863 files in the archive and the size is 17.720.037 bytes. "standard.misc" is in installdata/registry/presets after unpacking.

I don't know what's going wrong there. The installation script has hardly changed from the previous commercial versions and there have been no bug reports for it so far. Please check the obvious things, like free disk space and free memory during installation. If that's ok, please do a minimum installation to a new folder, with logging enabled, and send me the logfile (which can be found in ram:t after installation). Logging is enabled with a checkbox on one of the early dialog pages shown during installation.

The second beta is now online. Spell checking and thesaurus hae been removed, reducing the size ot approx 9 MB. The updated archive is packed with lzx to remedy unzip-related problems. The link can be found here:

I tried the new demo on 68060 AGA 64 colour WB at 704x528, running FBlit and one or two other patches. I hope Dietmar will be pleased to hear that, despite his reservations, it scrolled at a very acceptable speed, even with lots of syntax highlighting. It would be better, as he says, with more screen space but it is quite useable with a smaller font.
The demo achive seems to mainly consist of a complete VBCC and OS3.9 NDK installation. It could be half the size were it not for those. If there are bandwidth problems, removing the support module for those things would not hurt as a demo IMHO.
For what it's worth, I'd have liked to have seen a Titlebar-Stacked multi-window layout to add to the horiz/vert tiled. That this is the only significant feature issue I can find to criticise shows what a nice piece of software it is.
PS to Dietmar: Will the region-encoding protection affect the software's ability to run on an AmigaOne/OS4?

I consider the C/C++ mode to be by far the best part of GoldED and I'm quite happy to have received permission to include the NDK and the excellent vbcc compiler. I'm sure that somebody out there appreciates the opportunity to see compiler, developer material and an editor well-integrated without the hassle of downloading this here and that there before starting the beta. Well-integrated means that you get automatic makefile generation, the NDK is cross-referenced, and vbcc options can be set via dialogs (to use it like SAS/C).
>For what it's worth, I'd have liked to have seen a Titlebar-Stacked multi->window layout to add to the horiz/vert tiled. That this is the only >significant feature issue I can find to criticise shows what a nice piece of >software it is.
I've never understood the purpose of tiling windows that way, they remain mostly obscured. The sole purpose appears to be selecting a window. However, with GoldED, you switch from one window to another via the window tabs that hang below the toolbar. You can leave all windows at full size. Or you use the next-window shortcut.
>PS to Dietmar: Will the region-encoding protection affect the software's >ability to run on an AmigaOne/OS4?
GoldED is for AmigaOS 3. I'd be (positively) surprised if it runs under the planned OS4. However, if it runs then this part will run, too, it's nothing exotic. Just the country and timezone read from the Locale.

I do not question the desirability of the feature. (It would be one of
the uses I would have for the package.) I just felt that it need not
be part of a demo. No offence intended! :)

OK. Fair point. With the tabs it does make it redundant.

Great. :) I think OS4 would have fairly poor compatibility if an
(apparently) system-friendly app like GoldEd failed to run.
Any estimates yet about when this new version is likely to be on sale?

Hi.
First..Nice to see a new GoldED release, but what I cannot understand is that GoldED 7 is somehow discontinued and still it is on sale. So where is the point of buying a full product when it is clear that there will be no updates at all?
Second, the ONLY thing at GoldED that I ever found disturbing is the fact that it keeps every file in a separate window (iam not talking about tiling) but I would like to see golded managing multiple files in ONE window. That means that if I press the tab button of another file it should NOT switch the window it should indeed bring the new file in the actual window!
But puh, why I am talking about this, Dietmar dropped support ;)
And third, I would love to see GoldED released (L)GPL or continued by other developers. But I guess Dietmar wants again money for the sources...
