According to this page there are plans to port OpenBeOS to the Amiga 3000. The likelihood of it actually appearing will depend upon volunteer effort.

Why only the 3000? Seems very odd to me... How will they ensure that it doesnt run on other Amiga models too? Some sort of ROM checking code?

In reply to Comment 1 (Anonymous):
It will be ported using an A3000, so the A3000-SCSI-controller will
be the first to be supported. OpenBeOs is opensource, so the only
thing that would keep you from running it on the HW of your choice
would be the lack of talented developers to write the needed drivers
for it.

Hey I got an idea, why not port it to the AmigaOne? What's the point of porting of an OS to Classic Amiga hardware when the AmigaOS is abandoning the Classic hardware in favour of new hardware?!?

That's exactly what I was thinking, Mike. AmigaOne and/or Pegasos would make much more sense.

Maybe porting OpenBeOS to classic Amiga hardware will give the old hardware a new use once we've moved AmigaOS over to a nice AmigaOne?!

I doubt that anyone will be tempted to use Open BeOS on slow hardware when faster x86/PPC variants are available. Then again, I have my doubts on the uses of Linux/68k when there are faster, cheaper x86 boxes available for free or next to nothing.

Did you guys read the article? The author of *NewOS*, the kernel that will be used for OpenBeOS, still has an old A3000 lying somewhere around and plans to port NewOS to variety of now obsolete hardware (including an old Atari machine he owns, and so on).
Porting a kernel is not quite the same as porting a whole OS. Moreover, I doubt that NewOS will *ever* be ported to any 68k Amiga. I don't think the author was serious about this...

"It will mostly be up to the community as to whether or not OpenBeOS will run on these platforms -- volunteers writing OBOS drivers will be a major factor."
You are correct, NewOS is the kernel and there is a great deal of work that has to be done to port it to Amiga. However, there remains the smallest possibility that Open BeOS will attract developers for a 68k version. It doesn't take a genius to realize that Amiga users are more likely to support AROS rather than Open BeOS.

What faster PPC boards are available for OpenBeOS? I guess these would have to be Macs, wouldn't they? Maybe some people can port OpenBeOS to Macs since they may not have the "business-case issues" that prevented Be, Inc. from pursuing a "hostile port" to undocumented hardware. But for other implementations, working with a cooperative hardware vendor might be a better way to go. So Eyetech and, even more so, bplan could look interesting for OpenBeOS PPC fans.
Anyway, I sure as hell hope Eyetech is trying to maximize sales of these boards by finding all possible markets for it.

Yay!
Let's have Yet Another Operating System for our Amigas. That should help everything ;)

If BeOS moves to AmigaOne, Amiga OS will be beaten, sorry.

I agree that BEOS is one of the best OS's ever made, but I think it will depend on software and driver support.
What is the latest for BEOS? Is anyone updating it?
I'll definetly consider dual-booting if there's a split of killer-apps or games (lol, games: We can only hope).
I'm going to reinstall OS4 warp on my PC because Windows 98 can't handle the internet and WindowsXP won't run any of my games.
My A1200/040 Tower is currently packed away until the house is renovated.
But I'm saving every penny to buy a big bunch of PPC apps to go with my A1/OS4 system. Might even buy Mac office so I won't have to go near a PC again... EVER.
There's still one issue: Peripheral drivers. I won't pay any more than US$25 if a third party does it. What's the story here?

Not to berate BeOS, but who cares if it is ported to AmigaONE? Nobody
will use it, and nobody will buy it. No one uses BeOS, it's dead.
The 68k Amiga has more life than BeOS *EVER* did.
Again, I'm not bashing BeOS as an OS, because it was intuative, easy
to use, and technically a good OS. Then again, who ever said having
something that made sense would equal popularity?

I for sure have more hope in a opensource beos clone than i have in amigaos.
(uhm, "i think there is a bigger chance of success")
Considering the time it takes for amiga inc/hyperion to just port amigaos to ppc without adding all that stuff i would like to have in it to make it a modern os (multiuser to begin with) i don't think amigaos don't have a chance. But i would love the one who proved that i was wrong.
But there aren't many non-networking(read unix) opensource os out there, and i'm quite sure a opensource version of beos would be better than one of amigaos. If only AmigaOS would have gone opensource and free for everyone 1994 ... =)
I'm tired and my english sucks. OpenBSD is great btw, now you know.

Nobody will buy an opensource BeOS clone to run on their Amiga?
I'd say thats fair, yes - who buys free software?
In relation to your other comments - I'm using BeOS r5 right now... and no, I wouldn't run it on a 68k Amiga... but I'll definitely continue to run it on my x86 hardware, and probably on an AmigaOne given the chance.
As for it being "dead" - the userbase is growing significantly at the moment (between new users and those returning from other platforms), and there is a very high developer/user ratio.
For those who are curious, BeOS 5 Personal Edition (x86) is still a free download from
