As the first bigger application IOSpirit's fxSCAN now supports Amithlon with x86-native versions of its CPU-modules. Thus fxSCAN now runs on native on 680x0, PPC (WarpUP, PowerUP, MorphOS) and x86 (Amithlon) with full speed. The portation of the OCR-engine and the servertask (one for every sytem) again brings at least a doubling of speed compared to the emulated 68K-CPU. Under "Downloads" you can now download a free patch from version 4.0/4.01 to 4.02.

All changes since V4.01:

- direct support for TurboPrint (no more only via Graphics Publisher), incl. copying. Partly leads to greatly enhanced printing speed.
- x86-native versions of the servertask and the OCR-engine in Amithlon.
- when saving JPEGs, the DPI-information is now saved, too.
- version 8 of the fxWARP3-system (new "fxWARP Memory Guard" to work around bugs and limitations of WarpUP)
- the standardtool saved in NewIcons can now be changed with the PICTURETOOL-tooltype

Kudos to the author(s). This shows just how handy AmigaOS can be when no processor/OS prejudice is involved. Let's hope we see more of it.
Cache Ya,
Craig.

In reply to Comment 2 (Desmon):
This is the right approach.
It would be interesting to know which compiler is being used and how
much extra work is involved.
As there are only three CPUs involved, there would be little advantage
in using Tao's VP, even if it was available for AmigaOS.

In reply to Comment 3 (Don Cox):
What would improve fxScan greatly would be a Levels control with
black, white and midpoint sliders, like the one in Photoshop. That is
the most useful way to adjust a scanned image IMO.

>This is the right approach.
Only if we are able to separate the binaries, and I’m afraid that I686 is going to under mind the current development of the PPC, and the continued development of the AmigaOS4.X

More work then using VP, AmigaDe provides and standards API.

This is only true if you have an PPC and I686, the advantage VP has over GCC or any otter compiler is the assembler language, VP has infinity number of CPU registers, one otter thing is the standard way of doing things, how ever I expect VP binaries converted to native to be less optimised with out knowing so.

You call them CPU registers. I call them variables, because that is what they are (in the *programming-language* called VP).

Yeah, use VP to ensure that your software will never run on AmigaOS 68k, MorphOS, AROS, Amithlon, UAE and we still don't know if elate will be ported
to OS4 in the near future.

This is great news and I hope it sets a trend for the would-be great fxPaint package in the near future!
Now we need Amithlon USB support to get access to cheaper scanners to use this software :)

In reply to Comment 7 (Alkis Tsapanidis):
None of the platforms you mentioned has any potential of beeing profitable now or in the future, VP code on the other hand most definitly has. So, from a professional software developers view; TAO's technology exists today, works on many different platforms and CPU's, ensures your software to live on regardless of what happens to the Amiga or any other platform specific software market and you'll never have to worry about porting your software again.

In reply to Comment 9 (Samface):
Dunno if you noticed that, but all the DE partners have fled from Amiga inc,
except Microbrain. Sharp? Install DE and wave your warranty bye bye.
Nokia? Mediaterminal=FALSE. Several developers hobby or not are frustrated due to the fact that Amiga Inc releases crap instead of the promised SDK updates.
If Amiga Inc doesn't do something during the few next months, selling DE will be as profitable as selling white organic paint for Milk.

In reply to Comment 10 (Alkis Tsapanidis):
I never mentioned the AmigaDE, I was talking about TAO's VP technology. Besides, the failed cooperations with Sharp and Nokia is NOT due to the actions of Amiga Inc. and therefore not valid arguments for your cause. On the contrary, the fact that these companies did show genuine interest proves the potentials of the technology.

In reply to Comment 11 (Samface):
Tao's Intent, while an impressive piece of software, is not AmigaOS.
The existence of a scanner utility on Intent would not help me with
scanning and OCR on my Amigas.

In reply to Comment 12 (Don Cox):
Yes, neither AmigaDE or Intent is AmigaOS. But then, it'll be a part of it by AmigaOS4.2.
"But, AmigaOS4.0 hasn't been completed yet, how could we be sure that there will even be an AmigaOS4.2?"
We can't. This is how I see it; even if Amiga Inc. fails with bringing the AmigaOS back and/or integrating the AmigaDE, the software market for it won't die as long as TAO's Intent lives on. You see, as long as you don't target specific Elate RTOS or AmigaDE specific API's, the Intent and the AmigaDE are binary compatible.

Of course I meant that Intent and AmigaDE *software* is binary compatible... :-P

When I create an source code I never think about 10/5 years ahead, as we all know how, how the computer technologies has changed over the last ten years .
When we are taking about technologies, create once and run on many as
It’s possible with VP AmigaDe, it has great advantage over,
Rewriting then compile source code for every OS/CPU you like to port the program to.
Provided that AmigaDe is available
