And the total is.. 940. Not bad. "Countdown to the draw: The promotion has ended. Coupon count may still rise as third party dealers submit their sales. Winners will be announced soon." .. So, we could well make the 1000 mark, well done people, I hope you all order AmigaOnes as soon as they are available :) et

Good point ! From Bill McEwen's Executive Update
>"So for $50.00 you get a $50.00 off coupon and a free shirt."
>"Still not enough? Okay how about this: When we reach 2,500 orders we will have a random drawing for 4 free AmigaOne/AmigaOS 4.0 systems." - -
>"I think that there is more of you out <snip>5,000 <snip>10 AmigaOne/AmigaOS 4.0 systems<snip> if we have 10,000 orders we will give away 20 AmigaOne/AmigaOS 4.0 systems and 5 Amiga-enabled cell phones!"
>"One last level: If we reach 25,000 orders <snip>50 Amiga systems, 15 Amiga Cell Phones, and a trip for 2 to either Hawaii or Florida."
So for 854 you get what a T-Shirt. They will have to give some systems to show goodwill. Really although I didn't like this promotion. I hope they do produce enough for those of you who did buy a coupon to actualy get an A1 system. I hope you guys prove the system works better than anyone hopes!

Perhaps I'm mis-understanding something here, but what has this promotion total got to do with potential software userbase? The only thing it indicates for definite is the number of people who are now in the club, and who will receive $50 discount on an AmigaOS4 / AmigaOne purchase. There are a lot of other factors involved in predicting userbase, surely.

Well, I believe that the potentional userbase can be 940 multiplied with at least 10... Not everybody wants to preorder something that is so uncertain. As soon as the wares are available to customers, I think they'll sell a lot more than 940 pieces of AmigaOS4/AmigaOne.

I would be surprised if the number of people ready to buy an AmigaOne
and software for it was as high as 9500. Half of that, possibly.
This is the pre-first stage of what will at best be a very difficult
recovery. The problem for the next twelve months is to get the Amiga
back to something like a modern computer, with functional browsers,
office suite, video editor, Java JVM, etc. Then you can start telling
your friends about it.
It will be a long haul, but it can be done.

You gotta look at the unix world , no huge commercial support for the desktop user yet they have *alot* of software , why ? because they don't sit around moaning and they do things like the Debian project ( which supports amiga surprisingly well )
And in the hayday we had aminet being filled by the second , and i hope when we have access to the faster hardware aminet will once again be full of ports, crazy demo's etc :)

I didn't buy a coupon because of various reasons but I will surely get an A1. and I know MANY who feels the same way. They want to see/try the product before they buy anything.
I don't think 9500 AmigaOne users is unreachable within the first 6-8 months after it hits the shops. There are also a lot of Mediator owners awaiting the SharkPPC, which I really hope arrives as Elbox are rumored to have sold over thousand Mediators. Then there's the owners of P5 PPC cards, don't know the number?
So within a year I guess we might be over 10K OS4 users not enough to attract any software companies from outside the community but a lot better than the classic scene right now. Remember that all the new A1 owners will be very eager to spend money on new stuff compared to classic owners.

first of all - that 940 figure is only the number of people that bought one or MORE coupons. So it's potentially alot more than just 940 * 50usd.
I know this for a fact.
Second of all, that money is not AInc's. They've just borrowed it till the machine comes around.

I didn't buy as well. And i'm aiming for an A1, but here are no amiga dealers ! If amiga will be succesfull in the world, here (in slovakia) dealers are starting to born and my A1 will boot up on my desk.
And don't forget: If any killing 3D (or other procesor consumptive) stuff comes out, where the old 603, or 604 will be exhausted, the 'no A1' guys will want to upgrade. Sooner or later. And there is a chance they will chose A1. (Ok they can chose SharkPPC with a G4 when available)

>With a userbase of 940, I can just imagine that the likes of Adobe, Symantec, and Corel are climbing over each to develop for the Amiga.
Ofcource the big companies can't invest in amiga software,yet....amigans
these days have their machines at home, for personal use, the companies
you mentions creates software for professional buisnesses, DTP and stuff
where mac seems to dominate the marked with more powerful hardware.
The price for one of the products from the companies you mention
probably are lots more that all/most apps/utils you can buy on amiga
(thinking of those still being developed, Frogger,IOSpirit stuff,Voyager,Amirc,Ibrowse ++++ the
usual applications)
But it might attract more developers, afterall..amiga is kinda a hobbyist
computer...a computer/OS for the *creative* minds..
So after some time we will have more ports of free/gpl software....and more
to play with...that equals more 'reasons' to jump onto the platform(?)...
And we'll have the 'better' people migrating to our OS, creative people
will seek their equals or something like that :) equal mind, equal spirit
Well, it can be like this...atleast in a year or two....
Maybe if our OS became more/closer to mainstream once, then some companies
would consider developing for our platform, but not with current amiga users..
If there are 10.000 amiga active users, how many would need an office suite ?
and how many would buy it....for what...2-300 USD ?
If there are 10.000 amiga active users, how many would need a graphics package from Adobe/Corel ?
Corel Draw 10 price ? over 500 USD ? (guessing)
What we must have soon is :
*A decent uptodate browser
Ibrowse last hope ? I still can't pay my bills with online banking using amiga browsers, i need a pc
*A (skinnable?) movie/mpeg/divx/whatever player (using your system as a home entertainment center)
Frogger seems to go this route now..
*Audio player, continuation of AmigaAmp/Amplifier is a must! And a AVS system wouldnt hurt
either.....I would guess a G3@600mhz is enough to perform most equalizer triggered
effects.....Connect your machine to the stereo&tv at night and play your OGG/MP3 collection
with some nice visual effects
Ofcource all this you can do today with the most used OS'es today, except our :/

To put it into perspective, 940 is: less than the number of Playstation 2's my company (very well respected by Amiga users (LOL)) sold in 48 hours at its reduction to 200 UKP, 890 more than a good classic Amiga game could sell after 1998, and 940 more than the number of readable English language Amiga magazines there are.
The process of paying money in advance for goods, where that money is being used to manufacture the product, is highly illegal. Unfortunately while Amiga Inc may not be bad people, Bill McEwen strikes me as the charismatic guru at the head of an insiduous cult. And I'm scared.

Make it 941...well, er.....
Actually I did send in my check for the $50 club. Sent it certified
mail, return receipt requested. Never got the return receipt.
The U.S. Post office says the mail was not picked up. The U.S.
Post office says it is coming back to me.
I wonder why. Was the address given to me to send it to Amiga the
wrong one? Does Amiga not pick up its Post Office BOx mail? Do
they not like return receipted certified mail?
Hmm...well, actually since I'm not a developer, or a programmer,
and don't really want to delve into the guts of my computer,I'll
just have to wait till somebody or something develops some practical
creative, killer apps for the new Amiga... For me, kinda bleak now.
Was going to go to Sacramento for Amiwest, but I'd rather wait now
and see the machine in action or at least hear about it (running
OS4..)...why would I need it to run Linux SUSE? I would buy a used
750 Mhz PC for that(problematical that it is(was)).
As far as the numberof 940. That is not too bad considering there is
only the promise of the machine, with some hardware out there now..
I would guess it is about 1/20's of the potential demand for the
first run. I would guess there are a lot of ex-amigans running Linux
now, who wouldn't mind developing for Amiga and Linux so for them
it is not bad. They already probably has MS stuff also, so they
can develop for all 3...maybe even utilize AmigaDE, which I think
was the idea in the first place.
As they said in the movie, "Computer of Dreams", "If you build it,
they will buy.".......

In reply to Comment 9 (Marcus Sundman):
Well, I don't think it's next to nothing. After all, this 940 (plus however many other memberships were sold by KDH, Compuquick, and so on) is a pretty "elite" group. These are folks who:
1) Have the $50 to spend
2) Are willing to give that $50 to Amiga, Inc., as a sort of downpayment on a product that hasn't shipped yet and which -- I'm guessing -- won't ship much before the end of the year.
So, if you define these people as "hardcore fans with a spare $50 lying around," I'd imagine that there's another tier just "below" this group that didn't order (yet) because money is tighter for them and they don't have the $50 to spend on something that's not a sure thing in their eyes. They're waiting to see a real, functioning A1 running 4.0, have some money set aside for this purpose, and will order when they see a real, working machine.
Next, you have the people who perhaps remember their Amigas fondly, are skeptical that the A1 will ever see the light of day, but, like the above group, might buy an A1 when they see it working.
So, my guess would be that there will be, over the course of the next year, at least several thousand customers for the A1.
Before you ridicule this, remember that Amiga, for all their stops and starts, is trying to pull off something so difficult here as to be nearly ridiculous: to (re)launch an alternative computing platform in a Windows PC dominated world. Furthermore, they are trying to do this via a coalition of tiny little companies and part-time contract workers. And in a terrible economic climate -- PARTICULARLY in the technology sector.
Alan Redhouse has made it clear that Eyetech isn't looking to make a fortune on this, just a profit. And I bet that he will.
More power to all of them, I say.

Well, i don't think this is strange at all.
1) AmigaOS is just to outdated and probably without a development path for the future.
2) The hardware is better used with BSD or Linux, but why would you pay so much for so "bad" hardware?
I'm quite sure MacOS X is a lot better than AmigaOS4, and their hardware is new, and apple has a better chance of success.
As soon is I have money (or earlier) I'll probably get myself a Powerbook running MacOS X 10.2. It's not much more expensive than x86 hardware, and you get a decent os.
Right now i use OpenBSD/x86 and Linux/sparc, but it would be nice having a UNIX there all programs actually works.
