I've been looking into porting one of the PC GBA emulators to Amiga. Only a couple have source code freely available and they arent very good (slow, poor compatibility) so its on hold until I can get source code for a decent emulator (Mappy would be nice but the authors dont reply to emails...)

How come noone comments on missing sources/patches for GPL binary-only releases unless it's Hyperion who does it? Where is the source? ;-) (no, I don't find any MOS stuff upstream, only i386 asm and dos/nix/win32 makefiles and binaries...)

Because they have the think rebel hats on and love to knock down any offical effort . I dislike alot of the *geek* / Linux community because of their microsoft does it and it sucks , but linux etc companies can get away with attitude. Such as Redhat stealing source from one of the BSD's and pasting it into linux ( without mentioning where it came from etc which was required unders its license ) , that was hushed down but if a microsoft like company does it , well theres alot of noise.
Same rules apply here :(

The word often , means mostly but not always .... bit thats nit picking and thats only ok when we're disliking liking amiga inc + partners isn't it :P
Ohwell , the world really is doomed.

I had noticed the lack of sources, and equally the lack of any MorphOS specific readme, to indicate that the sources had indeed NOT been modified, or what caveats, if any, there were.
I think people should be a bit more tidy with their releases, whether GPL or not, or whether they are commercial developers or not. AOS4, MorphOS, AROS or whatever...

In reply to Comment 6 (Ole-Egil):
as said in bottom of page, the source is available on his home page, i dont have the time to make huges packages including sources
the references to the url of the home site holding the sources are in the docs included in the archive
if your not happy please ignore the page and if you complain louder i could remove the archive
i dont think its a problem since the origine of the sources are clearly mentioned on the page and in the archive
perhaps you only wanted the sources and didnt know of to search on the web
now you know where they are ;)

hello corpse
i've seen you often trolling around with your blind amigainc fanatism :(
you seems to be looking for troubles :(
have you tried to compile this ? (have you even succeded to find the sources ?)
only unpack, and run configure and make
then you will get an exe file
now you should leave and go compile it for os4 ;)

I know how to search the web, but that doesn't mean I have to stop being a pedant :-)
If there indeed IS a readme stating where to get the sources (I could only find the binary on that page, wouldn't it be nice with an <a href=someplace>? :-) ) then that's fine. I'm not about to compile it anyway, since I'm way out on the experimental wavelengths at work here :-)

In reply to Comment 11 (Bill Hoggett):
I agree. If the sources compile without modification, just frigging say so in a readme. And for heavens sakes make the upstream maintainers know about it, maybe they like their software actually being circulated ;-)
If it didn't compile without modification, then logic dictates a bit more than that readme should be distributed ;-)
But by all means, don't listen to me. Just don't complain to me if someone else starts yelling about it. I only warned :-)

In reply to Comment 19 (jah):
I saw a link to a binary, checked out the link, the page surrounding it, and the upstream archive. Then I asked if there was any sources and got flamed for it. THAT'S my problem. An anti-Hyperion person would not get flamed for asking about a source from Hyperion, yet I put up my hand and got it severed. I really don't NEED to compile it myself right now, as I'm in the middle of something heavy at work. But it's nice to know that ASKING questions will get you flamed. Thank you. A simple "there's a readme in the archive" would have sufficed.

In reply to Comment 19 (jah):
the problem is many people complained at hyperion not releasing the source for their internal port of quake 2 , they also stated the GPL requires this which it does not . The GPL although does require the products of the original source ( including small mods like porting ) once distro'd as binaries to have the source of the new program or changes available.
This is nit picking , but ... Alot of *them* like to nit pick on everything amiga inc + partners and hush up the wrong doing their side ... Its only right that the nit picking works the other way.
So the tip of the day is : deal with it.

Well, this is why I've not released anything recently also if I've compiled tons of SDL games and apps both for MorphOS and 68k (mostly for testing purposes for my SDL port).
I've no timeframe to prepare nice archives, with icons, readme, amigaguide, installer, etc, etc... I know that a lot of people will complain about this (or about the fact I've not compiled an AmigaOS4 version!!!!) so it's often better not to release anything...
Sad but true.
Bye,
Gabry

I know it's quite time consuming to provide docs/icons and all the bells and
whistles, expecially when you're going to release something fo free, but it's
also true that most of this work can be accomplished by insterested users,
(and usually is), we're a community after all, isn't?
P.S.: a WarpOs version would be really welcome ;)

provide links.

In reply to Comment 28 (Anonymous):
It was a long time ago ... But the details i can remember of it are :
Redhat coder making linux kernel driver for some storage thing
Coders efforts enter kernel tree
People notice that this code looks exactly like one of the BSD's driver for this device
People start talking but are quickly told to shut up and that the issue has been *sorted* out.
And its meant to have happened a few times before , the rules to keep software free abused so some guy can spend more time in IRC then working :P
But thats not the point , the point is this was hushed up but when BSD source enters windows legally theres alot of noise. Some people have taken the wrong attitude from the GNU , they think that being Offical or mainstream means its bad and that everyone should know its limits and pitfalls but they're also quick to cover up the mistakes of their rebel leaders so to speak.

Gabry, I've always wondered why you didn't made a single port yourself .
So you just gave me the answer ;) Please release your ports.
Don't bother with icons, docs and other stuffs. There are lot of people
in the amiga community to do all thoses things to your place.
I have only a single wish, it would be usefull if people that port games
or utilities, try to contact the authors to submit there modifications.
I know I'm the first to not do this, but this is really needed. I only made
this effort with MySql, I hope to do it more and more in the futur, when nearly
all SDL games would have been ported.
Once again, Gabry thank's for your great work.
It would be a good idea to release, at least,
the ports you did using the SDL shared library.

I agree. Release it :-)
But do take the time to copy this text into a readme: (can't complain if I do all the work for you, eh?)
I currently don't have the time to brush up all my releases with user guides, pretty icons or source archives. If you want to help me on any of these points, contact me on the following email address:
<insert your own address here, ok?>
Gabriele
See what I mean? Most of the community (myself included) need a swift kick in the butt to make us wake up and contribute. So go on and kick :-)

Now you're just making things up to prove your point. Yes, there has been BSD-licensed code in the Linux kernel, infact there still is in the 2.5-series. It's dual licensed though. The few cases where "pure" BSD-licensed code has made it in to the kernel, it certainly hasn't been hushed up. Unless ofcourse you call submitting it as news to slashdot as hushing it up.
