Posted by Budda on 08-Sep-2002 16:08 GMT | http://www.microdirect.co.uk are selling 64MB EDO SIMM for £14.50 currently. I'm looking at the trade price list so it might be a couple of quid more, but still a bargain IMO! |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 3 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Rik Sweeney on 08-Sep-2002 16:09 GMT | Well I've got 64MB and Quake 2. I copied the baseq2 directory over and placed the quake2 executable in that directory. When I ran it I got a grey screen and nothing else. It only used up 24MB RAM though and seemed to be playing the demos since it loaded intermitently. |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 4 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by JrPacman on 08-Sep-2002 17:21 GMT | It's nice to finally see a non leaked beta version of Quake2. But has anyone out
there managed to run it? Here all I get is a grey screen (and yes I did set gl_mode
to 0). I've got 165mb of free fastram so it can't be a ram shortage or does it need
more than the 8mb of gfxram on my ancient bvision? |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 5 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Timothy De Groote on 08-Sep-2002 17:50 GMT | In reply to Comment 4 (JrPacman): Hi,
altough i have the Hyperion latest version i tried this port and it DOES work on a BlizzardPPC+Mediator here. I have 96MB.
It does NOT however compare to the Hyperion version i have. It has no sound, no video options, no ahi, some bugs. And it's static so no mods can be ported
But still i'm glad to see SOMEONE trying to port it. |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 6 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by JrPacman on 08-Sep-2002 18:24 GMT | In reply to Comment 4 (JrPacman): Just managed to get it to work by setting gl_mode to 2 instead of 0. |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 7 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Rik Sweeney on 08-Sep-2002 19:58 GMT | In reply to Comment 6 (JrPacman): Nope, I still get a grey screen with that.
I didn't have a config.cfg file to start with so I just made one and wrote
set gl_mode "2"
into it. Any tips? |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 8 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Steffen Haeuser on 08-Sep-2002 20:15 GMT | Hi!
The "grey screen problem" is appearently due to the second port only running
on the demo version files, not on the files of the Quake 2 full version.
Please note that Frank Menzel is in the meanwhile Betatester of the Hyperion
Quake 2 port and gave up on his "own" port, after he saw that we had lots more
features (Support for Sound, for Mods - his port was "monolithic" which means Mods are not supported,...), and also that the current version
of our port was - according to his numbers - more than two times faster than
his port. This was because we did a lot of optimizations. Basically his port
had the speed we had before we went on optimizing the thing.
Our port also had no longer the crash problem in MiniGL-Mode he still had in the meanwhile.
Frank already sent several bug reports (having to do with Mouse Input with
a special mouse adapter which he is using), and seems to me like a very
good Betatester. I took care of his bugreports already BTW, the bugs are fixed.
Our Quake 2 port was demo'ed on a local Computer-Party in Germany this weekend BTW, and people were very impressed. There was also gaming going on, between
the Amiga with our Quake 2 port installed and several PCs. The Amiga could play with the PC without having performance problems.

Posted by Lando / Trinity on 08-Sep-2002 21:31 GMT | In reply to Comment 8 (Steffen Haeuser): Thank you for the update Steffen, I'm really looking forward to the release of your port :) I have been very impressed by what I've heard regarding the speed you've managed to get too. Keep up the good work! |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 10 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by anon on 08-Sep-2002 22:49 GMT | In reply to Comment 8 (Steffen Haeuser): So your port does virtually everything. A shame it's still vapor. |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 11 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Ole-Egil on 09-Sep-2002 04:00 GMT | In reply to Comment 10 (anon): Duh, of course it's still vapour. Once it's released it's after all not news any more. Then some OTHER game will get all the attention. This is why 95% of all the games info on the internet was written BEFORE release of a game. Once it is sold, it's too late. Why? Because then Joe User can go buy the game and try it himself. Same about movies, actually. That's life. But it really isn't about what is vapour or not, it's about hype. Being vapour means never actually getting to release date. You know, silently just withdrawing the plans? |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 12 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Anonymous on 09-Sep-2002 04:44 GMT | In reply to Comment 11 (Ole-Egil): Not to mention it's not vapor if source is available proving it exists. The next Linux kernel isn't released yet but you can read the source. It's hard to "fake" GPLed code, it either exists or it doesn't. |

Posted by gz on 09-Sep-2002 05:01 GMT | In reply to Comment 8 (Steffen Haeuser): yes... "Our quake2 port and our port with OUR optimizations along with our hyperspace engine... fission energy... Our quake2 superior to... electromagnetic fields... microwawe energy... In conclusion OUR quake2 port is so good there is no reason for anyone to even test other versions available since they are drastically inferior..." |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 14 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Anonymous on 09-Sep-2002 09:16 GMT | Yes I know this is GPLed code and this guy has a right to port it, but
as an Amiga user, I think he should be ashamed of himself. Poor Hyperion!
Even if they didn't do a port of Quake 2 this version means that Amiga
users can play it at the EXPENSE OF PAYING FOR A GAME FROM HYPERION.
This means that the people at that company aren't being paid by Amiga
users. Nothing should prevent Hermans et al from receiving their
pound of flesh from Amiga users.
Think about it. |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 15 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Rik Sweeney on 09-Sep-2002 10:39 GMT | In reply to Comment 14 (Anonymous): Play the demo only.
I've got the full game and it doesn't work with this port sadly. |
|
Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 16 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Steffen Haeuser on 09-Sep-2002 11:09 GMT | In reply to Comment 13 (gz): anonymous: It is not vapor. Our port was already shown at various Amiga shows
and User meetings. It is not released. But vapor and not released is something
different. Something being vapor means that something does not exist at all and is only blabla. Our port was just presented once more this weekend at a user meeting.
gz: The comment on the double-speed was not coming from me, I am only citing
an email of the author of the second port :) And the other things (like the other port being monolithic exe and such) are just simple fact anybody can
examine who has the other port downloaded.

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 17 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Kronos on 09-Sep-2002 11:23 GMT | In reply to Comment 14 (Anonymous): Huh ????
AFAIK Q2 was/is a private (hobby) project by two Hyperion-employees, and if
they now think they must make some money out of it (assuming you are right)
than thats there problem.
Every piece of SW is good, be it commercial or free, but if the commercial
one can't stand up against free competion .....
But the whole point is moot because this port was only done "just for fun"
and because the author wanted to learn something out of it.
So don't worry, you will get another 3 years old game port by Hyperion. |

3 year old port is better than no port. Haven't heard of you releasing anything
contructive. Get a life or give it a rest.
Where can I download the demo level(s) from?

Posted by Rik Sweeney on 09-Sep-2002 14:08 GMT | In reply to Comment 18 (John Clark): Id software's website probably still has a demo. Or just go to Google and type in "Quake 2 Demo" and that should do it. |

Posted by Anonymous on 09-Sep-2002 14:28 GMT | Hyperion´s Quake2 will be presented at O.A.S.E next weekend, too.
Maybe they can also install it on the Pegasos computer and have a
little fun shoot-out there? ;-) |

Quake2 for Amiga released : Comment 23 of 24 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Steffen Haeuser on 09-Sep-2002 21:02 GMT | In reply to Comment 22 (Jan-Erik Karlsson): Hi!
Really ? Then something else is strange... at least here I only got a grey screen with the full version and some other people said the same. Maybe it is some sort of issue with the datafiles (maybe it does not like depacked PAK-files ?) So I guessed it's maybe due to the demo/full-version (especially when someone on amiga-news.de Programming section had the same idea some months ago, about this second port).
Anyways, I only tried the second port for port comparision reasons :)

Posted by Amifan on 11-Sep-2002 16:41 GMT | In reply to Comment 23 (Steffen Haeuser): This quake port works perfectly with the full version. It only crashes when you attemt to access the video menu.
Since I use a Mediator with Voodoo3, I close all programs, remove the bg pic and reset the resolution to 640x480x8 to free GFX memory.
Then I simply run the game. |
