Finally, the sequel to Immortal - the definitive Amiga game music album - has been released. Immortal 2 includes music by such legends as Chris Huelbeck, Jochen Hippel, Allister Brimble, Richard Joseph and others, with each track rearranged with studio equipment by the original artists themselves. The CD is now available from synSONIQ Records.

All rearrangements with "studio equipment" of such songs I`ve heard so far turned out to be lame.
I`m certain part of the appeal of those pieces lies in the sounds, software and limitations they have been made with and the "medium" it`s played on.
It also doesn`t help if the usage of "studio equipment" goes over the top and the original feel is even more lost.
If you really want to do sth like this, use a sidstation and an old akai 12 bits sampler. But please no romplers :-)

Immortal wasnt 'brilliant', but I did enjoy it nevertheless. Especially the harlequin remake. I guess Ill be getting the sequel.

I agree there have been a lot of less-than-impressive remakes of both Amiga and C64 classics. I think that most often they've been a case of the arranger "not getting" the motive of the original, so to speak, and either (1) making an almost exact copy of it, only sans the "raw 8-bit punch" or (2) mangling it unrecognizable. And that's often simply due to the arranger not being the author of the original. Immortal 1 already showed that results can be good, if the original authors get to rearrange their own work - Baz Leitch's and Allister Brimble's tracks really stood out from the rest on that album, IMO.

Ofcourse I expect the original composers to do a better job. And I sure hope that album did turn out to be good. Though I gotta hear some sound samples first to decide if I want to have it.

I tried the mp3 samples and I can`t say I`m very impressed :-(
Some songs actually did come out nicely though. But most just confirm that more
is NOT better. Also the songs sound often quite thin.
I don`t know exactly what kind of instruments have been used, but way too often it sounds
like replaying a general midi soundset on a rompler(rom based sample replayer, aka crap).
But what these tracks miss most is proper mixing, that is very important and seems to sadly have been neglected.
