and to make 12 year olds part of the commercial world is in my opinion
something which should be frowned upon, how many of the 12 years old will
here that they are not good enough, how many will be put on the bench to never
play in a game etc.
this proves that morphos is the devil's tool just brand it 666

- Thendic-France sponsors junior football teams with T-shirts.
- * Blind Amigans * sponsors Amiga Inc. and Bill McEwen with T-shirts.
Find the difference... Sure, that's not the same world ;)

> I hope this isnt gonna impress anyone? i mean any small garage company

Sure they can. The important part here is, though, they can and they DO. I certainly hope that this sponsorship is implemented well and taking into account the considerations and worries posted here, but I still think it is a nice gesture. When I played junior hockey and soccer, we too had sponsors and it was great to have nice shirts and stuff. Without sponsors that would not have been possible and the kids next door would've laughed at us. ;-)
There certainly seems to be a huge difference in the way Thendic and Amiga Inc. address their respective markets. Thendic's marketing seems to focus on supporting people, be it user groups or junior soccer, Amiga's marketing seems to focus on asking for support (just see the latest executive updates for instance). After years of getting used to the latter, I'm beginning to really like to former.

Gosh, this takes me back. Anyone else remember when Commodore sponsored French football team Paris-Saint Germain?
That was a totally pointless exercise as well. People don't go to football matches - even Premier League ones - to think about geeky computers.
Is it just me, or is Bill Duck really scraping the barrel now? Quick, find something to announce! Anything! Just get the company into a headline!
File under G4 daughtercards at $200 and 'Viscorp is the new owner of Amiga'.

Ah, but photographers take pictures which later make it into newspapers and magazines, the TV cameras are there etc. If there was no value in this sort of advertising, no one would do it. However, there's little worldwide advertising value in sponsoring a team of local 12-year olds somewhere.
> Is it just me, or is Bill Duck really scraping the barrel now?
Well, if he did it to help out some youngsters, more power to his elbow.

Sadly, I think you're probably right. Just another really cheap way of getting a headline. Why this is of relevance in a computer news forum like ANN is beyond me, although it might have some relevance in a local Moenchengladbach newspaper.
> File under G4 daughtercards at $200 and 'Viscorp is the new owner of Amiga'.

This is what I like seeing, some good community outreach by a company to help pay for uniforms of a children's athletic team. This does give me some hope that there are real people left in what was once the Amiga Community that are not completely self centered, ego driven, FUD spreading, coupon selling, Bill Gate's one night stand, hang the little guy out to dry, and do anything for more VC whores. But I suppose this will give some indigestion to the few Kommunist in the Amiga Kommunity, having a corporate name on kid's uniform. Me, I love it.

@some that are really crazy!
What sickness do you people have to criticize the sponsorship of a little kids futball team?! I have started reading these boards again daily and the AOS crowd is winning the “idiocy” war now and losing the support of the quiet folks like me. What I see is one product – the Pegasos running MorphOS – that is being sold even if it is in “beta” and a group of people that are supporting the “community” as it has not been done in years. They have been to shows in France and Austria and will be in shows in Sweden, Italy, Finland, Germany, Poland, and Russia. On the IRC last night I heard they were doing something in Spain this month too. All this in a couple of months. What is the other side doing? Yelling about how illegal they are and that they stole this and that and calling them names (really teapot where do you come from?). I can hardly wait for the next BS from Ben Hermans. Even, Allan Redhouse’s A-Expo comments have been circulated around and how this person can keep his good reputation when he clearly not good is beyond me. I for one am sick of the stuff seen on some of these boards. If things keep going like they are it will be a first round TKO and the new team in the Blue Corner will be the big winner!
On a sidenote, no matter how lame or brilliant the sponsorship idea is, it sure beats the crap out of selling "Amiga support T-Shirts" for €50.

This is how it went (AFAIK).
Someone (the trainer ??) asked Thendic if the would like to be the sponsor.
Thendic replied with something like "sell 1 BETATESTER for us and we will do it".
I don't see a reason why this should be a problem for the kids, and sponsoring
isn't really new in that age-class, but normally you would finf the name of the
local plumber (or insurance agent,or ??) on it.
Will Thendic be able to sell maschines to those kids ? No, but alot of dads are
gone see them in matches, and some might want a bit more info. There is a good
chance that some of those dads are in the right age to be in Thendics target-
group.
Oh and I could bet you would all be cheerleading if AInc had done something
similar.

Agreed. The kids are not being exploited here. They benefit.

Agreed again. This is relatively effective local advertising, and might get them a few sales. However, why does it have to be announced on the web as a "news" item? Will the placing of small advertisements in local evening newspapers be next? I can just see it now: "THENDIC PLACE ADVERTISEMENT IN LITTLE WOOTON HERALD!!".
> Oh and I could bet you would all be cheerleading if AInc had done something

If they did it, yes. If they announced it to the world, absolutely not.

I think Rose refers to the fact that Commodore took an expensive sponsorhip that had no real immediate benefits to the company, quite the opposite. I remember at the time many thought that was yet another bad marketing move (same as when they sponsored the America's Cup). Commodore had stopped making PC's and they were sponsoring their own name when they should have used the name Amiga.
>Sadly, I think you're probably right. Just another really cheap way

Probably so. Personally I'm happy if they help 12 y/o kids, but what makes me wonder is why the need to announce that? Seriuously, who cares? If they were sponsoring an internationally (or even nationally) know team I would understand that, but little kids...? Seems more like a (ineffective) marketing move than a real interest in helping those kids.

Funny how blind you are to reality. If there was just an interest in helping kids they wouldn't make an announcement. This is cheap marketing, plain and simple. I certainly wouldn't advertising worldwide that I'm helping a group of children if I was doing that just out of the good of my heart

Ah, I don't remember the PSG shirts, but they did use "Commodore AMIGA" when they sponsored Chelsea. You can still find these on eBay quite frequently. I suspect someone has a stock of unsold ones and he's selling them piecemeal to get the maximum amount for each. (Rumours that it's Bill McEwen are probably grossly exagerrated *g*)

I mean "cheap" in terms of relevance, not in terms of financial outlay. We already know Mr. Buck has a large personal fortune to play around with, so that's not in question.
Maybe you are regularly bowled over by the very air Thendic breathe, but personally I'm a bit tired of reading at what time they brushed their teeth in the morning, seeing pictures of the restaurant they had lunch at, and being presented with reports on the size of the logs they passed when they last visited the toilet.

its a hobby machine with nearly no new software and emulating old amiga 68k software,
why would any dad buy that ?
Can dad pay his bills using online banking ? no, amiga browsers usally can't
Its a pretty good machine for email though....the nasty email viruses

unless he have special interrest ofcource, or he used to

Sponsoring computer party's would be better, be it linux parties windows or lan-parties

Announcing some minor advertising deal Thendic have entered into is not news. It's not even a matter of interest to anyone ouside Thendic and the small local community directly affected by the deal.
But it's not just about this thread. Every other thread on this forum seems to be about Thendic. How many "pictures from the show" threads wre there after Thendic's last Pegasos show? Frankly, I'm getting easily as sick of reading about Thendic as I am reading about McBill's latest bout of excitement.
