Leuven, Belgium - September 27, 2002.

Hyperion is pleased to report that it has completed the AmigaOne firmware based on the GPL'ed PPCBoot project. Below you will find a description of the implemented hardware support and functionality. We want to thank everyone who has contributed to this project.

Hardware support for the following devices:
-Serial port
-USB UHCI
-USB keyboard
-USB storage devices
-PS/2 compatible keyboard
-i8259 interrupt controller
-3com 3c920 ethernet with full busmastering
-VIA IDE controller (A and B revision)
-Real time clock (RTC)

Features of PPCBoot (as implemented by Hyperion):
-x86 BIOS emulator capable of initialising and using nearly all PCI and AGP graphic cards based on the chipsets of ATI, nVidia, 3DFX, S3, 3Dlabs (Permedia), Trident etc.
-Auto detection of SDRAM modules
-Auto detection of bus and CPU speed
-Support for PCI and AGP
-General ArtiticaS support
-General VIA686 southbridge support (686A and 686B)
-IDE support (harddisk and CD-ROM booting)
-Floppy support
-Booting over network"

You don't get it do you?
There is more to it than just the chipset/cpu dependicies.
But obviously this is too much for you to grasp, and for some other people too. But I am not going to point out these things. If you think I am just blowing air here, feel free to think so.

No, i don't get trolls like youself.

PLEASE EXAPLAIN!!!!!
>But obviously this is too much for you to grasp,
No, trust me, I am quiet intelligent, even after a few beers :)
>and for some other people too.
Yay, insult everyone else! good for you :) You're number one!
>But I am not going to point out these things.
Why? Look, I know these... umm.. . 'things'... just exist in you're head, but to humour you, please, please tell us oh wise one
>If you think I am just blowing air
<sarcasm>No!!!!!</sarcasm>
>here, feel free to think so.
I do think. Maybe you should give it a try?

The chipset dependencies of AmigaOS are much overstated anyway.
They are mainly located in the following OS modules:
Exec (main culprit), completely rewritten in C with HAL
devices (most of which are quite trivial to replace, like serial, parallel etc.)
graphics.library (solution: P96)

You're right, you certainly didn't point out anything relevant. It seems to get rather common around here to claim things and then back out when questioned.

He's a sneaky one. He thinks if he doesn't show his hand then we can't better it!
But we all know he's full of it.

But hey, Picasso96 is just a bunch of patches to graphics.library.
I hope you are not serious about this.

In reply to Comment 207 (anonymous coward (to please hauser)):
Picasso96 is a graphics API. In 3.x it was implemented as "a bunch of patches to graphics.library", because there was no "copper.device", "blitter.device", etc. The only system-friendly way to access the graphics chips was via graphics.library. Since the chipset-dependent graphics.library has been done away with, picasso will no longer be just "a bunch of patches", but a designed-in part of the system (which presumably will use the new graphics card drivers to do all the hardware banging for it, so it will itself be hardware independent).

Basically they implemented (will?) a graphics.library replacement using P96,
just like the CGX 5 solution.

Yes it is, only there is a chance it is better implemented and more compatible because the P96 could have given acces to the original graphics.library sources Hyperion has.

In reply to Comment 210 (MIB):
Well, the sources are unusuably afaik, they use TOO much of custom chip code.
It will be a total rewrite. Compatability is not an issue, CGX already has
a FULL implementation of GFX library, and i believe that P96 will do the same
too, if they didn't already do it.
Better implemented and more compatible is somewhat irrelevant, both the CGX and P96 team already know the GFX lib inside out without seeing the sources.
