Slashdot has a news item about MorphOS. Unfortunately, it is labeled as retro-computing and is not really informative.

In reply to Comment 1 (L8-X):
First line of the MOS 'Overview' page:
"The target of the Quark microkernel is to provide modern functionality for a new OS layer and to run as many RTG friendly applications we loved from our old Commodore(TM) A1000, A500, A2000, A1200, A3000(T) and A4000(T) systems as efficiently as possible."
Perhaps MorphOS have been overconcentrating on the Amiga compatibility and forgetting about a future direction for their OS, or at least, forgetting to tell anyone about a future direction for their OS.

Why should MorphOS, a competitor to AmigaOs be treated any differently to AmigaOS? If Amiga can get Retro'd, so can it. Its based on the same platform.

It's okay. Thanks to ANN's dedicated cadre of haters MorphOSians have
already a wealth of experience with attack articles, and they haven't
stopped us yet. In fact the effort is gaining momentum.
I emailed the Slashdot author about the obvious defects (inappropriate
page linked, misleading comment, general ignorance) maybe some of
these defects were accidental, and will be corrected.
It is only the first Slashdot article on MorphOS.

In reply to Comment 16 (Gunne Steen):
Like Alkemyst just pointed out, that's not what I said. All I'm saying is that the MorphOS team has noone but themselves to blame for their product beeing called a "retro" OS when they reverse engineer the AmigaOS3.1 and then market the resulting product with classic AmigaOS compatibility as it's key feature. To me, "next generation" means something new, not something backwards compatible. I would have so much more respect for their efforts if they didn't reverse engineer or strive for backwards compatibility and instead created something entirely new.
Neither MorphOS or AmigaOS4 features anything new or revolutionary. But, atleast I can see a future in AmigaOS since AmigaOS4 is just a first step towards actually offering something new to this industry. MorphOS seems more like a wanna-be AmigaOS to me and doesn't offer anything new besides features that has been industry standard for several years already.
There is a world outside the one of Amiga-land, you know. If we wan to survive, they are the ones we're gonna have to impress, not ourselves.

You really know nothing about the WIP behind the scene parts of MorphOS.
You already know about the JVM, which is QUITE closer to completation than
AmigaDE, to integrate in OS4.2.

You know, it's no wonder if /. doesn't know what to say about MorphOS. The MorphOS site itself doesn't contain any decent overview of what it is.
Amiga.com does at least contain a little bit about AmigaOS and what it is and does.
Why can't you publically visible members of the Amiga community stop bitching at one another and actually contribute some helpful, informative and useful commentary, instead of just sniping?
I get just about as much useful commentary on what's happening with Amiga from /. as I do from here - and that's a very damning indictment.
This is a community site. You are the community. Stop trying to score points off one another and WRITE SOME HELPFUL AND INFORMATIVE POSTS INSTEAD.
Then maybe you can get /. to carry them and convey them to the wider world.
Sheesh...
No doubt someone will go (amongst the abuse) "what do you call helpful?"
Well:
- what is MorphOS?
- what does it run on?
- what does it run?
- what is it good for?
- what's it bad at?
- how is it related to Classic AmigaDOS/AmigaOS 3.5 or 3.9/AmigaOS 4/AROS/etc.?
- is it good to use? what's good & bad about it?
- it it finished?
- how much does it cost?
- can you dual-boot with classic AmigaDOS? 3.9? 4? DE?
etc. etc. etc.

- what is MorphOS?
A PPC OS with an "A/Box", a AmigaOS reimplementation/wrapper.
- what does it run on?
Amiga PowerUP cards, Pegasos and AOne/TerronCX MK2 cards.
- what does it run?
Most RTG 68k software, PowerUP, WarpUP, Warp3D and native software.
- what is it good for?
Transiting to a PPC platform, while running old software FASTLY.
- what's it bad at?
- how is it related to Classic AmigaDOS/AmigaOS 3.5 or 3.9/AmigaOS 4/AROS/etc.?
It's partly source compatible with 3.x and has the same feeling, and it shares
source code (of some A/Box modules) with AROS.
- is it good to use? what's good & bad about it?
Well, for me, using it is pleasurable. The bad part is that it's not 100% ready
just yet.
- it it finished?
Stable, and usuable, but not 100% ready, there are stuff to be implemented
or betatested and there are stuff internally in developement, I don't know
about. There's also a JVM WIP.
- how much does it cost?
Yet to be seen, right now it comes with the Pegasos.
- can you dual-boot with classic AmigaDOS? 3.9? 4? DE?
In Amiga computers, you can dualboot with anything that runs on it.
I don't know about DE, you can't dualboot with something that doesn't
exist:)

Running after the fly ball...
Liam P. typed:
- what is MorphOS?
It is a PPC processor-based OS that has a yet-to-be-properly-measured level of compatibility with classic Amiga (tm) software. There's also some MorphOS software.
- what does it run on?
The Pegasos, an alternative computer with modern hardware created by the German firm bPlan.
- what does it run?
See answer to first question.
- what is it good for?
Well, potentially it is good for anything any computer is good for. Internet apps, communication. The game Software Tycoon was just released for MorphOS.
- what's it bad at?
Well... there is stuff like printing that they are still working on, but stay tuned!
- how is it related to Classic AmigaDOS/AmigaOS 3.5 or 3.9/AmigaOS 4/AROS/etc.?
I think they wanted to be as compatible as possible with 3rd party programs written for 3.1. I don't think there were many programs written for 3.5 or 3.9 that wouldn't run on 3.1. Amiga OS 4 is in development and is regarded as a competitor. The controversy surrounding MorphOS is mostly that it offers itself up as an upgrade path for classic Amiga users without being approved by the holders of the Amiga trademark.
I should also state that MorphOS is related to Amiga because its developers come from that community, and are regarded by MorphOS supporters as in tune with the spirit of that classic platform.
AROS is... well go look at their website. AROS is for X86.
- is it good to use? what's good & bad about it?
Yes. Well, you will have to wait for some impartial reviews to find out what is good and bad.
- it it finished?
It reached version 1.0 but is not finished. Thendic-France, the worldwide distributor of Pegasos and MorphOS, projected a consumer release of 2nd December, 2002 IIRC.
- how much does it cost?
If you go to www.vesalia.de you can see a range of configurations from under $600 (for the motherboard, processor card, and OS) to over $1000 (for a complete system with all the trimmings).
- can you dual-boot with classic AmigaDOS? 3.9? 4? DE?
No. No. Too soon to be certain but probably no. No.

so if some MicroSoft developers came from the Amiga community then we should accept windows with open arm.
Just cos ppl were in the community in the past does not mean they are good for the future when they turn to compeat.
just like many amiga users in the past that have switched to windows.
they were part of the community too, but what i see most of them do now is slag the amiga OFF & keep telling the rest of us to give up & go windows.
hey but they were part of the amiga, so they must be right. so lets go windows
