Well then. Deliver the game to the resellers. I have allready pre-ordered it.
Can't wait to play it.

Is there any chance that those of us with the original PC version of quake II ( and don't really need / want mods ) could do a say paypal donation to get our hands on just the amiga executable ?

In reply to Comment 2 (cOrpse):
Find someone you know who's bought the whole pack and install the executable. Or wait for it to appear on Aminet. If you think a donation will make a difference to Hyperion's employees then I'm sure small quantities of Euro currency wrapped in an A4 sheet will go down just fine (Pizza money!)
Hopefully there are still enough semi-active Amiga developers that improved versions will quickly obsolete the included binary anyway, there are plenty of TODO items in the Quake 2 engine as released and I doubt that Steffen addressed all of them even if it has been over six months since it was "nearly finished".

no wonder ppl post anon when they know they are talking crap & will say something negative with out FA to back it up.
how do you know how much improvement could be made untill you get your hands on it.
& will the things that need to be improved (if any) will they be worth the effort.

another plan was to brew ( one habbit i'm not sorry to have ;) ) huge amounts of larger and sell it on , but someone told me i'd get busted soooo thats a last resort :D

BTW...
You might be interested to know that we in the meanwhile also acquired
the Source-Code of the ChaosDM Mod. When Quake 2 for Windows was just coming
out this Mod was the most-played Mod in the region where I am living (actually
my little brother and his PC-player-friends never played Quake 2 - they always
only played this ChaosDM thing :) ). Altogether we have now 62 Mods ported.
I was trying since I started working on the Quake 2 Source to get the source-code
of THAT Mod :)
Asides from the base-game you will also be able to see some Mods at the
Presentation at the WOA :)

Bernie has other things to worry about.
And also a PPC is imposible to emulate at decent speeds to allow you to play PPC-Quake2 in an x86... why not to buy the original one for the PC, wouldn't be this easier???

That's not going to happen... but perhaps someone will compile an x86 (at least partly) version of Quake2 for Amithlon. I suppose there wouldn't be too much endianess problems as Quake2 was written for x86 in the first place, unless the Friedens introduced some for the PPC-port - which is very likely, with the PPC being big endian by default :/

"unless the Friedens introduced some for the PPC-port - which is very likely, with the PPC being big endian by default :/"
Quake II for PPC Linux's has been available for a while by the looks of it :
http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?word=quake&searchmode=searchfiles&case=insensitive&version=stable&arch=powerpc
So i very much doubt the friendens introduced any "problems" , it also shouldn't be too difficult to merge the amigaOS parts of the port into the X86 tree to create an X86 amigaOS port ...
Interview Steffen Häuser (Quake 2) : Comment 18 of 34ANN.lu
Posted by Steffen Haeuser on 23-Oct-2002 12:44 GMT
In reply to Comment 17 (cOrpse):
Hi!
Quake 2 is fully endian-aware. It compiles for both Big- and Little-Endian (well,
one has to switch a little compiler-switch in the makefile...). I did not break
anything there, neither did anyone of the other people involved in this
project :)
An "Amithlon-version" would have the disadvantage of only running in Software
Rendering, though. When I compiled a 68k-version it did not work on Amithlon,
though (though it worked for AmigaXL). It had to do something with Compiler-Settings.
Possible of course that usage of a different compiler would have generated different
code (I tried it with gcc-68k 2.95 which did not generate ANY working code, and
with StormC 4 gcc 68k which did not work on Amithlon with ONE compiler setting... if
I used the OTHER compiler setting I got huge graphics bugs (Linker Library bug
in the StormC Linker Libraries probably).
possible that usage of gcc-68k
2.95.3 would have leaded to success... but not sure, maybe it's a bug in Amithlon,
also... but maybe this bug has been fixed in the meanwhile also...).
These problems are not related to gcc in principle, only to gcc-68k. A gcc 2.95.3
(or gcc 2.95.2) compiled PPC exe works perfect (though of course not on Amithlon,
hehehe)
Note: The "fully Endian-aware" is only true for the base-game, some of the
Mods are *not* fully Endian-aware. I had for example to fix (using #ifdef AMIGA
as for me AMIGA is always big endian, hehehe :) ) the AI of the bot used
in the ChaosDM Mod.

How about an I Am Amiga Club deathmatch , winner gets a amiOne , runners up get some of those amiga pens and matches ( only got one book of matches and one working pen left :( ).
Amiga Inc needs to do some community sprit building exercises any how :)

Was Q2 compiled with gcc 2.95? I thought you'd have compiled it with 3.x, since that's the version that's got Red Hat's PPC improvements... Ah well, I guess 5-10% speed difference is not that much, and there's no altivec to take advantage of. I'm too much of a geek :)

In reply to Comment 21 (cOrpse):
I'll agree with you on Quake 1. Quake 1 blew. The engine was great; it gave rise to Half-Life*, and HexenII which were both good games (Hexen II was pretty, but not that "smart" of a game; essentially Q1 in a fantasy setting but it did have a few neat twists).
QII was (for the time) much nicer in terms of enemy AI (relative to it's Quake and Doom forbears), plus I liked the backstory that went with it. If you can find the mod "Stroggs Gone Mad", it gives the Stroggs UT Bot-like smarts and thus makes the game a wee bit more challenging. Of course, I tend to view QII through rose-colored glasses as I bought it the same day I bought my Voodoo-II card and never played a game in software mode ever again ;-)
(* HL was originally built largely on the Q1 engine - *if I recall correctly* - and later "ported" to the Q2 engine when it became available. I might be munging that up though.)

UT2003 is a bit of a sucker too .. feels like playing quake 1 on a 486 all over again ( it runs fine , it just is a really sucking game , and it feels like the control have some sort of goo in um ).
UT on turbo mode .. yum :)
Or SOF ... Isn't there an amiga port of that coming ?
Interview Steffen Häuser (Quake 2) : Comment 25 of 34ANN.lu
Posted by Steffen Haeuser on 23-Oct-2002 21:59 GMT
In reply to Comment 23 (Some Farker):
CodeSmith: Q2 was built with gcc 2.95.3. There is no GCC 3.x for Amiga yet
(at least no GCC 3.x for AmigaOS 3.x, but we did not want to make Quake 2 an
OS 4 only title - though our next titles (after Q2) will probably be OS 4 only,
at least PPC titles). gcc 2.95.3 is *ways* faster than gcc 2.95 (But I only had
a PPC-version of 2.95.3 installed, for 68k I currently only have 2.95 installed,
that's why I tried the 68k-compile with 2.95)
As to the Bots: We have ACEBot, Licence-to-kill-Bot and the ChaosDM Bot compiled
for Q2. Actually a lot of Q2 Bots are done using the Eraser-Bot-Source, and
sadly for the Eraser-Bot the source-code is lost (at least one file - which is
still available as object file for Windows and Linux-x86 - but that does not help much).
So only Bots without any Eraser-Bot-Source-Code can be ported to Amiga. And
this is the ACEBot, Ltk-Bot and ChaosDM bot. Ah, and the Oak Bot I think. If I
remember that one's also in one of the Mods I ported :) If I remember right that
was the Rip2 Mod. But not sure right now. It is of course possible there are some
more portable Bots, I did not check on Bots so much. BTW: The Ltk-Bot, a Bot
for ActionQuake, even gives headshots and such...
There's a Mac-Version of Eraser-Bot, but I never managed to reach the author of
that one... but he might have the source code (unless he also only has an
object file).

In reply to Comment 24 (cOrpse):
Yup, due Q4 2000. Hyperion usually over-run their original project estimate by 100-300% so it's not really that late in their terms. The other games Hyperion signed around that time, SiN and Alien Nations also haven't shipped yet. You can probably expect to see one of them in the next 12 months, assuming Hyperion don't run out of money like AInc and close their doors.
If you think it's bad for you, waiting in the charity handouts line (that's what it is guys, Hyperion can't pay the rent with the income from a few hundred game playing Amigans) you should feel for Mac users who are watching their PC-owning cousins play NOLF 2. A brand new Mac could easily match NOLF 2, but Hyperion aren't done porting the original NOLF to the platform yet...
Which brings us back to Soldier of Fortune. After waiting some time for SoF to arrive on the Mac, Apple fans were almost relieved to hear last year that Hyperion had given up working on it. This year SoF2 was ported instead, by a fast efficient team (not Hyperion) arriving very soon after the PC version.

Half Life was written on a modified Q2 engine. alot of what is in there wasnt there to start with ;) which makes it such a good game imho.
Mind you due to that extra work i dont think a port of it would be as easy for anyone as Q2 would be.

Anonymous: Alien Nations is a Titan project, not a Hyperion project. Ask them
why it is not finished yet. Sin is finished since a very long time, but just
is too slow on current Amiga hardware. It was finished at around the same time
like the Linux-version (we ported both over in a timeframe of 3 months).
