Apex Designs have cut the price of the Amiga version of Payback to 24.95 GBP just in time for Christmas. The game can be bought from their on-line shop here. For those of you who have already bought the game, there are also a couple of new/updated maps available on their Extra Maps Page.

Realy nice offer!
Unfortunately I still don't have the hardware for it.. When I get my A1 with OS4 it's a must have though!
Hope people who likes this type of game buys it instead of pirating it. Show your support.

Aww crap. I don't have the hardware for it either.
Except it does seem there's hope for it working under Amithlon, which I have installed on the office computer.
And I _do_ have the VISA ready. And I _am_ getting OS4 in a not-so-distant future.
Aw crap. I've just filled out the payment form. I think my hands are gonna order it...
Aw crap, I just did.
Oh well, this better work on Amithlon, or I'll be forced to play it on the A1240@40MHz until OS4 is ready ;-)

If Apex design want to sell more Payback for Christmas, they should release
a version compatible with the Pegasos, which is easy to do.

..why does it not work on Pegasos then? shouldnt be an issue with PPC
as MorphOS has a WarpUP wrapper...and the 68k version should run
emulated. Warp3D also worked on the old 0.2 beta I ran on my BlizzardPPC...

The Pegasos doesn't have Paula, and Payback doesn't use AHI. That's the problem.
BTW, the 68k version of Payback was/is ***unplayable*** on my BlizzPPC 040/25 + BVision.
The PPC/W3D version is fast enough (so bad the computer vehicules still can't follow the road :-( ).

Yeah, I know. But I don't want "ok". Payback is _awesome_ if you have enough CPU, so playing it on "ok" will seem like a real letdown. But of course I'll give it a spin ;-)
(I've been playing the demo a LOT on the A1240)

You really need a PPC board and a Voodoo3 to appreciate this game....Absolutely rocks...I can't believe there are people out there who haven't bought the game...
It'd be nice to see an 'enhanced' version for the AmigaOne/OS4.
Cheers,
George.

sound).

To anyone who has not bought payback yet, buy it already! Support quality commercial Amiga software!! And payback is certainly quality!

The only thing this game lacks is internet play. IIRC that will come when the OS4 version is available. I'd sure love to be able to blow up cheesegrate and takemehardgrampa online.

I found Payback was playable on 060+AGA. About 20fps@320x240 or 7fps@640x480.
Really worth playing - about the best game of the type we're going to get until 1st-person games become widely practical (ie: PPC and 3D gfx required). The PPC and 3D accelerated versions of Payback are, of course, even better. :)
Completed it ages ago. There are actually one or two aspects of gameplay that I prefer to the (IMO) excellent GTA3.

Where did you hear this? I guess James Daniels could have changed his mind but he was reluctant to do any more work on the Amiga version due to poor sales (I asked him at last years WoAse).
@Ian:
20fps at 320 * 240 AGA? That's just lower than the speed I get with 060+Voodoo3!
It really is a great game.

I hope James will do an AHI version so AmigaOne / Pegasos users will be able to play it smoothly. That may sell a few hundreds more copies.

Well, I think such a minimal effort would pay off in the end, but it's not my decision. He'll have to choose himself. If he's hell bent on not developing more for the Amiga platform, I'm happy just to get a copy of Payback as it is. I've spent money on worse things ;-) (I recently bought a car... *lol*)

Is it playable without a joystick? I seem to recall that the demo wasn't. In fact keeping the Tornado3D dongle plugged into the joystick port caused the demo version to go all funny.

I never used a joystick to play it, always the keyboard. Cursor
control on one hand and the fire (etc) buttons on the other was far
better, IMHO. I think all keys are reconfigurable.

IF you have a PPC (or even a 50MHz or greater 060) plus gfx card then this is an awesome game so WHY HAVEN'T YOU BOUGHT IT! ;-)
Do so NOW!

NallePuh ? Is it the soft which redirects paula to ahi ???
I'm gonna try it immediatly to tell you if it works on pegasos :)
BTW, making it available for new gen amigas (for me peg and a1) would
boost the sale a LOT : I wanted to buy it before but my config was
too slow.....

Yes it is very sad,now there isn`t any normal priced hardware to run games such as payback, heretic 2 or quake2.I hope that a1os4+pegmorp come with a compatible form for both so the users can choose hardware only and nor the software.

That was a 64MHz '060, mind. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I understood that many Amiga gfx card solutions do not offer greater speed, just better colour depth, due to bus speed issues.

With an Apollo accelerator, a Voodoo 3 is _quite_ a bit faster than chip ram. On a Blizzard, the chip ram access is faster than on the Apollo to begin with, and I think Mediator access is slightly slower.
(an apollo 1240@40 is slower on chip ram than a 1200@14.2, you see... So if you have an apollo, it pays off to not use AGA a lot ;-) )

agreed. internet play on this game would be awesome!
it doesnt even have to be much....simply take the AMarquee system..give
it a 'multiplyer front end' and allow 8-player action.
Dynamite is a brilliant bomberman clone..and uses the AMarquee system to
do this....Multi-Payback could do the same.

Payback is a 'killer app'
if normal consumers were to walk into a shop and play/see it running
on AmigaONE or Pegasos they would be tempted to make a purchase. its
a valuable game that the nextgen systems need to harbour.

You're deluded. Someone who has no interest in AmigaOS/MorphOS in it self or in PPC hardware would buy an overpriced, underpowered and outdated PPC motherboard to play a clone of an ancient game (GTA2)?
While Payback is fantastic for an Amiga game, and is highly entertaining, it's abysmal and pathetic compared to moderately modern mainstream platform games. Only glitz and graphics count, sorry.

Huh? What units are you counting in? A brand new PC game is more like GBP 40.00
Still, I agree with the earlier poster that this game is not a killer app. I think some Amigans have forgotten what a killer app really is. You have to do something completely new, that people can't get elsewhere. Something worth $1000 or however much it costs to buy the complete system.
People bought Amigas just to use a VideoToaster. People bought PCs just to run Lotus 1-2-3. People bought modems and signed ISP contracts to get Email (and more recently to get the World Wide Web).
BeOS people, frustrated by their inability to come up with a killer app for BeOS often talk about a second category, "dangerous apps", which they believe attract people who would otherwise be undecided about choosing their system. Payback could easily be a dangerous app, until it ships for the GBA, Linux and Windows. At which point its attraction is moot.
