This all sounds very cool. It looks to be adding up to be one of the best Amiga shows for a long-long time. Now if OS4 could be released here that would really make it pass into legend.
Well done to all those that have been involved in organising everything.

The part thats under the GPL is very far off being "the game" , the data files that make up the game are not *FREE*.
They should have a bplan/thendic Vs. Eyetech / Hyperion deathmatch ... loser gets their stand tp'ed ;)

What is actually so new in selling GPL'ed software ? Linux-distributors do
it since a VERY long time. Sure if one person does something illegal this
does not mean you are allowed to do it (but it's not illegal for these people either).
Again: The GPL in no way forbids the selling of GPL'ed software. And it is not even "bad style" like some people like to object. It is a completely normal usage of the GPL licence. This is even especially mentioned in the
GPL FAQ, that the GPL explicitely allows Resale.
If you want a licence were selling is forbidden you need to formulate a DIFFERENT licence. But Quake 2 is under the GPL, not some however-different licence. And actually there *is* software which is under a licence which does not allow reselling in any form (MAME for example has such a clause, and several other OpenSource-projects which do
not use the GPL, but some other "project-specific" licences - but this is
NOT the GPL then, but some other licence). Now if they would have released
the Quake 2 Source Code under the MAME licence resale would have been impossible. But they used the GPL, not the MAME licence.
Those people who are so negative about Quake 2 being for sale, don't they
ever consider that it's really nice to HAVE Quake 2 on the Amiga ??? All they do is bickering around (and doing so without even having read the GPL a single time probably) till in the end the release of Quake 2 for Amiga
comes out as if it would be NEGATIVE news - as it is not for free. While on the opposite I would say Quake 2 for Amiga is really POSITIVE news. I find this sort of attitude quite strange. Paying for something you get is quite normal I'd say.

Probably a waste of time, but:
If you check out the readme that came with the Quake 2 source code, you will see that it specifically said that you can do everything you want, including selling your port, as long as you comply with the GPL.
And the GPL does not prohibit you to ask money. You are buying the support (and the PC version, BTW). Source code will be available for everyone (in full compliance with the GPL).
I am even pretty sure that you are aware of that, but then, where's the fun in bashing Hyperion if you would admit that :-)

"Those people who are so negative about Quake 2 being for sale, don't they

I think everything you need to know about such people is shown in their attitude of: "As soon as I can get my hands on the CD I will upload it to Aminet so everyone can have it for free. I don't see why people who do all the hard work porting the source should get any reward for it."
Myself, I appreciate your porting it, even though I can't play it as I have no PPC.

Anyway the attacks on Hyperion for porting GPL software are totally unfounded. Were you going to port it yourself Dammy? Damn, I hope you realize you're sucking up oxygen which could otherwise be used by more intelligent flatworms you sorry little punk.
Is anybody planning to produce a filmography of the event? I enjoyed last year's 150MB MPEG.

By the way, Ben, I have to commend you on structuring that deal with Amiga Inc. to make sure if they went out of business, OS4 would not be jeopardized. I'm sure everyone waiting for OS4 appreciates your aforethought.
Question: If Amiga Inc. does indeed go out of business, would the product still be called Amiga OS? Would the Eyetech product still be called AmigaOne? I understand if you can't comment, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks.
