"OS4 is now highly advanced, but no, is not currently ready for shipping, largely because Hyperion have had to divert a considerable amount of their time and effort in sorting out the AmigaOne's PPCBoot firmware. "
Well, I thought they had 30+ developers? 1 or 2 allocated for firmware stuff should not delay the whole OS methinks.

Another strange thing: "That, and identifying - and fixing a small problem with the Articia southbridge chip"
That should supposedly read "northbridge", I hope :)

It's a shame that Eyetech didn't elaborate more on the 'fix' to the south bridge. Any clues?

The Articia S chip controls the PCI/AGP, memory, IDE, CPU interfacing etc. from the same chip so the North and South bridges are effectively in the same piece of Silicon. The South brige tends to control the PCI, serial, parallel and IDE. This is only dictated by commonly available hardware (e.g. PC's)

No the PCI bus used to be located in the northbridge, but since the PC north/southbridge designers used faster links between the north ans southbridge (like VIA's V-link) the PCI bus was moved to the southbridge....
THat's the reason why "we" can use "old" PC southbridges, They're just PCI devices....

a nonexistent NB-bug and prices that are well above the competition.

I don't really believe there is a single complex chip with 0 "bugs". And a bug does not nesessarily mean critical bug. It might be harmless or something which is hard to detect. Or it might be something which is not really a bug at all, but you just want to change behaviour of the chip in some case.

You mean Debian PPC or Suse PPC ( insert PPC distro here ) , Linux is a kernel and because an operating system uses the linux kernel it doesn't mean its going to be the same as another linux based OS ... e.g. Lindows Vs. Redhat.
"the amiga comunity does not need shit companys like you around, I hope you go BUST."

a great annoucement..... once again, like all great annoucnements
marred by a handful of idiots.
I'll be buying the XL model...havent decided whether to go for
the G3-700 or the G4-800... hell, i might as well just pay the
extra to get that top spec one. I've always had a top-spec
Amiga. thankfully its never made me bankrupt.
my main concern is what will live in it (in terms of gfx card etc)
but for now i'll put in basic components and run LinuxPPC to
get the PCB warm and used.
I may still get a Pegasos... but MorphOS will have to show its true
shining colours (and stop being just an AmigaOS API emulator)
before that decision is made.

Well, here we are then. New hardware. But the question remains, where is OS4? This is definitely good news, though; I have a question, though. When they say "taking orders", in what context is that?
That is to say, "We're taking orders and when we get back to headquarters, we'll have one sent out to you." or "We're taking orders, and when the production batch finishes, at some point in the future, you'll get one then."?
That's an important distinction I'd like to know; frankly the list of people burned by "pre-orders" in the Amiga community would probably stretch from here to the moon and back.
Otherwise, great job.
Oh! One final question - does anyone know what the deal with Onboard sound is? There was *no* mention of it in the spec-out article.

In reply to Comment 37 (Vincent Perkins):
I wouldn't recommend buying your A1 as a whole system; if you break it down, you're going to get really, really overcharged on parts. Sorry, but that's the way it's always been with Amiga dealers. Go to www.softhut.com and check out their "DE" developer's system (a PC running Amithlon, IIRC); it's a 500mhz AMD, and they're charging over $1000.00 US for it! That's patently absurd!
Buy the board, then go shopping for a tower, 133mhz RAM, HD, CD-ROM, video card etc. In the long run you'll save money.
-But that's just *my* opinion.

Actually, out of experience with many mobos over the years (not just AmigaOne), I'd strongly advise getting your RAM from the dealer along with the A1, as he/she will be best placed to sell you stuff that works in the quantity you require. Same goes for the Peggy, BTW.
And since I know there's been a price study among A1 dealers, no you shouldn't be paying excessive prices for good RAM.

RAM from Amiga shops is very very expensive, look at the price of a single sided 64mb EDO 72pin simm 59.95 GBP from an amiga dealer and 17.99 GBP from pc dealers and the memory works fine despite amiga dealers lies to put you off buying the cheap simm/s.

Gotta agree with you there, Dave...best thing to do is order the board*, hit the Eyetech website and find out what kind of 133mhz DIMM works best, then buy it from Pricewatch (or the UK equivalent for our friends across the sea).
Here's a little info for you: Waaaay back when, I bought my first hard drive (60mb!) for my Amiga. I hit the Amiga mags and tried to find one, finally found a "good" price, but I double checked and called my boss (who ran an Amiga-based internet-portal BBS) and told him. His response? "Don't buy that! Go pick up a copy of ComputerShopper and hunt through and find the same drive, I promise it'll be at least 30% cheaper than any Amiga dealer"
Long story short, I did and it was. So for shits and grins, I went through and checked out stuff at random comparing dealer prices in AmigaWorld versus "commodity" PC parts vendors and lo and behold it was about 20% more on average across the board to order from "Amiga" dealers.
That may sound like an ugly thing for me to suggest, but there it was in black and white. I hate to recommend someone *not* buy from an Amiga dealer but unless you've just got fistfuls of dollars/euros/pounds to burn, go with the least expensive that's what I say.
*presuming you want to DIY, of course.

very true indeed, i only ever use amiga shops at the very very last resort, without sounding like a ass i would never ever use amiga shops for hardware unless they are the only place around, i would rather use the loot or amibench type sites first than pay expensive prices which i do not think its worth the money,
For standard PC hardware i think amiga dealers are really stupid pricing most stuff about something daft like 60% more just because they say it will work on the amiga.
just to add to that, look on Power Computings website and compare the prices for the exact same hardware on there seprate Amiga/PC pages, they blatently sell pc hardware for stupid prices just because it is on their Amiga side of the website which i think it very disgusting and really shows the true colours.

It's not so simple with PC133 SDRAM, as quality varies dramatically. You may strike lucky with cheap'n'nasty RAM, you may not. And it's expensive finding out, believe me. It really is a common problem with mobos of all makes, not just A1 or even PPC.
(as for HDs, CD/DVD-Rom drives etc do what thou wilt: it's RAM that's the problem here)

Maybe some people want to use LinuxPPC in addition to AmigaOS rather
than exclusively AmigaOS. These folks will have their need satisfied.
(And there was a big thread recently on Slashdot about people intrested
in PowerPC and Linux, apparently thre are uses/desires for LinuxPPC, and
slashdot isn't that friendly to Amiga stuff so they won't even want OS4...)
Others would likely be interested in using it for development
purposes, my current interest. Hopefully this will help some 3rd party
developers get things working right, before the OS4 release, with the XE
to avoid sorting out the same problems after things are in customers'
hands and they are complaining about it.
