If you want the best PC-Engine Emulation Package ported to AmigaOS, write the author. I have been in discussion with the author of "Magic Engine" about an Amiga-Port. If enough people would request an Amiga Version he would port it to AmigaOS, he told me, "but up to now I did not get more than about a dozen requests".

If you are interested in PC Engine Emulation on the Amiga email to:

dmichel@easynet.fr

If you write him "be nice" :)

what about google? Too much work or it is not enough "Amiga" ???

The Magic Engine is a PCEngine (Turbo Grafx - 16, in the United States) emulator for PCs.

How about a NeoGeo emu that'll run KOF2001 and Metal Slug 4 ? or a port of a recent MAME with naugthy headers added for those games ;)

On a serious note, I would appreciate if people who post news items would do it a bit more professionally, providing an URL in this one for example, and using <A HREF> instead of simply inserting the URL as plain text. Proper use of <P> tags helps too.

Never ever heard anything about neither PCEngine nor Turbo Grafx - 16.
It's not explained on the page either. I guess it's an emulator for some gaming hardware of some kind.
Guess a search on google on those could help. But I won't bother. If people don't want to dig up info and explain stuff when posting then it can stay in the dark for all I care. Ohh well.

Check out: http://www.pcenginefx.com/
It will give you tons of info about the PCEngine, as well as its 32-bit successor the PC-FX.
The PCEngine was a 16-bit gaming console that was mostly popular in Japan. It had TONS of great games. If you love shooters, RPGs, adventures, and social simulations, it is by far the best console for the era. I am a big RPG and social sim fan and the number of games available for the PCEngine is simply staggering. (The very first mass-market social sim, Tokimeki Memorial, was first console-released on the PCEngine).
The PC-FX wasn't as popular (only had about 80 games made for it, give or take a few), but it has a cult popularity due to some very good adventure games and RPGs that were released for it, as well as some good social sim ports. It's also the only console to be released in a "microtower" case with a primary vertical orientation. (Imagine a couple gamecubes stacked on top of eachother and slightly elongated).
While the Saturn is my favorite console, the PCEngine and PC-FX rank not that far behind!

In reply to Comment 8 (Björn Hagström):
Some data (and right about the link, that was unprofessional :) )
The PC-Engine was a game-console introduced to the market in 1987 (with new games appearing till 1997 actually). At the launch it was the direct competitor of the NES, but of course the NES had absolutely no chance against the superior graphics of the PC-Engine. Still it was never really successful outside Japan.
Some technical Data:
CPUHU6280 7.16 MHz
Video RAM64 KB
Graphics Resolution256x216 (320x256 for TurboGraphX 16)
Colors: 256 of 4096 (Sprites and Background could choose independent
colors, bigger-than-screen Sprites were possible and often used actually)
Sound: 6 Channels
CD-ROM Support: CD-ROM Expansion released in 1988
Technically it could easily beat the MegaDrive, but had some trouble with
coping with the SNES once this was released (due to the custom chips of the SNES).
Most famous title is probably R-Type/R-Type 2 (the Amiga versions of these
titles are only ports from the PC-Engine versions, no "original" Amiga games, though many people think this).
The PCE was especially good as to 2D-Shooters, and later on (japanese-language, so uninteresting for Europeans) RPGs.
On Amiga right now it is only supported by DarcNES (and DarcNES has
no Sound-Support for PCE, also it only supports the "base" PC-Engine,
no support for TG16 and for CD-ROM-titles).
This Magic Engine at the earlier mentioned URL is the best Emulator
available for PCE (available on Windows, Linux and MacOS currently).

Steffen, Steffen, Steffen. I deplore and resent your comment that the games are "uninteresting" just because they are in Japanese. :-)
People are allowed to speak more than one language, and if you love console RPGs it's pretty much a requirement that you learn Japanese since they pretty much own the console RPG market and 90% of them do not get released in any other language. :-)
Or I suppose games that are released in English are uninteresting to you since you are from Germany. ;->
(As a point, in the waning days of the Amiga gaming market quite a few games were released only in German. For instance, I enjoyed the great business simulation game "Mag!", which was only released in German. I don't speak German very well but I learned to read enough of it to enjoy the game. :-) For quite some time, being an Amiga fan has required you to understand at least a little German, since Germany seems to be the strongest bastion of the remaining Amiga market.

>Steffen, Steffen, Steffen. I deplore and resent your comment that the >games are "uninteresting" just because they are in Japanese. :-)
Well - to MOST Europeans - is this better ? :) It's just that speaking
Japanese is quite unusual for Europeans (Well, I'd like to learn that
language, also to be able to watch Anime without annoying subbing and without bad dubbing (some German Dubs are really HORRIBLE)- but I don't really have the time for that :( Like it is I don't understand more than a few words in Japanese, so I am afraid a Japanese RPG without translation
would be "uninteresting" for me - just as I don't know the language - and
I think for most Europeans (and people from the US) it is likely that
the same is true...).
>People are allowed to speak more than one language, and if you love >console RPGs it's pretty much a requirement that you learn Japanese since >they pretty much own the console RPG market and 90% of them do not get >released in any other language. :-)
How many not-japanese people do you know who speak japanese good enough
to play such a game ? :)
>Or I suppose games that are released in English are uninteresting to you >since you are from Germany. ;->
Well, in Germany most people have English long years in School - so you
can assume that most Germans can speak English.

In reply to Comment 14 (Steffen Haeuser):
Well, true, most Europeans can't speak Japanese.... But then most Europeans aren't heavy RPG players either. :-)
It's kind of like how you have to learn (American) English if you are into rock and roll.... It's the "default" language of the artform...
Japanese is the "default" language of console RPGs. :-)
Among the console RPG fan community there are quite a few people who speak/read Japanese... You simply don't get to play some of the best games if you don't. Like, it's kind of hard to play the Megami Tensei series in English since only one game is available in English (the Super Famicom version of Shin Megami Tensei I) and that was a fan-produced translation. Megami Tensei was interesting to me so I learned Japanese. :-)
(For those who are interested, Megami Tensei is a long-running series of RPGs that involve befriending and summoning devils to do your bidding. Typically you can choose to fight for law (Christian-type-stuff) or chaos (Satanic-type-stuff) or for Humanity (which follows a neutral path). It's never been released in the west and probably never will because in some of the games and paths you wind up killing Jesus and/or God... A spinoff series, Megami Ibunroku, has has two of its games released in the U.S. (The badly hacked and censored Persona, and the not-quite-as-badly hacked and censored Persona 2 -- Part 2: Eternal Punishment... Persona 2 -- Part 1: Innocent Sin was never released in the west) Also the Gameboy spinoff series Last Bible had one of its games released in the west in censored form, under the title "Demon Slayer".)
Also, social simulation games like Tokimeki Memorial have never been released in the U.S. for some reason. There are "god-game" simulations like The Sims and Populous, but no social sims where YOU THE PLAYER are an individual in a social/romantic setting. I would jump for joy if Tokimeki Memorial 3, for instance, were released in the west, but it's not gonna happen.
Anyway, regarding anime, yeah learning Japanese definitely helps there too. :-) Steffen you should come visit me in America sometime and I can expand your education. (Surprisingly, the Friedens have actually visited the town I live in once...! ...but it was long ago and I wasn't living here at the time).

Hehe, I still have my PCEngineDUO with some really great games : Spriggan, R-TypeCD, GateofThunder, and SuperStarSoldier (HuCard) plus some other games.
In fact, the main CPU is 8-bit. The copro were 16-bit, especially good for sprites and scrolls. BUT...in hardware, the PCE could only scroll 1 plan (no dualplayfield like scrolls) and if you wanted several plans scrolls, then sprites were involved to display the frontmost plan.
The MD and the PCE are IMO definitely the very best consoles for 2Dshooters.
BTW, the PCE saw many crappy games coming out for just one reason : anyone could get a dev licence for FREE. I remember seeing a bunch of reviews in french console mags with very low marks (some 15 - 20 %).
Anyway, there were really very good games and the CD-ROM helped much for most of them, Shooters and RPGs on CD are really great (check the Ys4 intro, awesome...)
Ahhh, good times...

I did have a mame compile ( hand done ;) ) with metal slug 4 and Kof2001 enabled , never heard of rage of the dragons tho ..
I know the MAME people don't want the games developers to loose money from people downloading roms and using mame ; therefor not going to the arcade or paying serious amounts of cash for home version of the cart ( i can't remember the letters for that .. IIRC AES is that arcade edition ) .. My problem is that there are arcades around here that have anything other then old pacman and space invader bootlegs and i don't have the cash to buy a cart ... let alone the console to run it on and by the time i do likelyhood is all the produced carts will be sold and people will be asking sky high prices for them. Although i have tried getting hold of a 1 or 2(?) slot AES and supergun to play some of the relatively cheap ( in Neo-Geo terms £100 is cheap for a game ) carts.
Metal Slug 4 and KOF2001 are amazing games , if you can go and play them at a local arcade , if you don't live near a decent arcade you'll have to find other ways to enjoy them like myself ; ofcourse by doing so you must feel very bad while paying and prey to the SNK god each night before bed for a month.
Anyways , I'm off to prey :)

Well it only came out this year.

Partly that and also we don't want to give them any legal ammunition.
There have been some systems where the source code hasn't been made available so there is no chance of this happening. When people have been using the same hardware for fifteen years it makes it a bit more difficult to discriminate.
> Metal Slug 4 and KOF2001 are amazing games
Bizare, they are universally acclaimed as the weakest in the series.

Well, maybe the WarpSDL author can have a better result than me with the

If you know Japanese then you can go to this link to get some Japanese game magazines: http://www.enterbrain.co.jp/login/index.html
LogIN in the middle of the magazine rambles about game consoles and playing cards so please ignore them. Famitsu Netgames (Yes! The company which made a Japanese Nintendo Magazine!) talks about online games. And, yes they have Anime but are mostly only for the PC (and the random game console) nut one can study gaming in Japan.

In reply to Comment 29 (david):
I read quite a number of gaming magazines from Japan. These are probably not the best (though Enterbrain's "eLogin" is good for adult games! ("ero-games", hence the 'e':-))
My favorite mag is "Dorimaga", which I believe is published by Softbank. It used to be Dreamcast Magazine (abbreviated to "Dorimaga") but it went multiformat although they still have a strong Dreamcast bent (Dreamcast games are still published in Japan). Dorimaga covers the kinds of games I like to play so I really like it.
Also the Dengeki mags are good. "Dengeki Playstation" is good for PS/PS2 stuff. I also read "Dengeki G's" (cute girl game mag), and "Dengeki Hime" (adult game mag).
Famitsu is the most famous mag and they have the most critical reviews as well. They tend to have a Nintendo-bias (Famitsu is short for "famicom tsushiin". "famicom" is short for "family computer" and was the name of what was called the NES in the west).
Also good mags are the "Fan" mags (I forget who publishes them). And the Hyper mags like Hyper Playstation. Also "The Playstation" is pretty good.
There are *SO MANY* video gaming magazines in Japan. Easily more than the whole rest of the world combined. There must be about 100+ monthly video game magazines, with a dozen or so WEEKLY ones.

opinion is the best game system ever produced and
I still to this day find the games to be unique
and enjoyable on this system...
