Taken from Frogger homesite:
After being informed that Frogger breaks GPL license, Ive removed the two plugins based on GPL code. Also, Ive put the acknowledgement note on www pages. The source code for LGPL based plugins are now also available.
Moreover, Frogger goes Open Source, cvs with source code and other goodies should be ready within few days.

I strongly encourage the users of this program, who want it to mature, to contribute to its development either by "registering" it or contributing to it with patches... Sebastian did a good job and deserves his credits.

Shame it has to go opensource, as people will most likly not bother registering it anymore,
I registered mine ages ago and it has been one of the best programs I have registered.
I suppose he will probably stop developing this program as he will harldy get any reward from yet anymore.

I don't see why development shoult stop. The world is full of open source projects which just go ahead. One example is mplayer, a multimedia player based on ffmpeg, just like Frogger is.
Althought registrations are likely to diminish, now other people can contribute to the project too. If you like this project, then contribute to it, in whatever way you wish.

Besides this GPL violation issue is quite old news now.. It's been months since it was detected. IMHO it's only fair that he plays by the book. At that time I mentioned to those people ignoring GPL that without Gnu tools there most likely would be neither MOS now AmigaOS4, so it's not too smart to get those people angry by ingnoring fair rules.

Actually, that's not true. It just means no one person can kill development, but the project can still die if no one is interested in developing for it.
Having said that, I'm not sure a registration process is viable for open source software, so I'd change that to a donation system.

Sorry for offence this comment may cause, but I think this demostrates how stupid the GPL is. Frogger has required a lot of development and work from the author and he now must release opensource because he used some other GPL source. As we have seen in past threads, this does not extend just to the module but to the whole program. In the Linux/Unix world where everyone just operates by free opensource stuff this may be ok, but now what incentive is there for anyone to register Frogger?
I am not attacking opensource here, but the over-extent of the GPL. The LGPL is much more sensible and is what most people (both those who release and those who use source) thinks the GPL means

The problem with your reasoning is that it doesn't consider that one must pay attention to what he/she does and take in count the consequences of his/her actions.
When Sebastian decided to use GPL'd code in Frogger, he should have payed attention to what GPL means and what does it require, so if he hadn't agreed with the license's terms he could have just decided to not use that code.

The GPL isn't stupid, but a lot of the people who choose to use GPL code in their own programs are, so they then blame the GPL for restricting what they can do with the finished product.
It's simple: read the GPL. If you don't want to respect it to the letter, don't use any GPL code. 100% of the responsibility lies with the programmers, and so does the blame. The GPL and LGPL are both OK and each has its own pupose.

I don't quite get this reasoning that licences would stand in opposition to open source. It's still developd by the principal author. I can't compile anything beyond my own "Hello world" programs, and can't really be bothered, either, nor can most people, not even in the Amiga world, I think.
