In reply to Comment 40 (Nicholas Blachford):
}The people funding this company have been involved with the Amiga for a long }time and see this as a long term investment. They are spending a lot of money on }this and it would be foolish to give up after a short period.
It shows in amigaland that thendic are placing high bets, showing up at all
amiga shows, bringing alot of demomachines(was it 50 machines on next show?)
with stylish towers/desktop cases and expensive LCD monitors.
It makes perfect sence and the natural choise for amigausers, to go for Morphos
and Pegasos machines *IF* no other option where available....it almost looks
like a 'real' amiga, as seen in various screenshots....if it could stop
crashing, it would look like a 'real' amiga....the Betatester packages(as I see it) is a desperate attempt to get the most needed amigausers to buy it, users
who have waited years and their current hardware is like 10 years old, will buy
*anything* thats better than what they have....many loud(on ann)morphos users
say its here, and you can buy it, but its a *beta* version, and with the amount
of crashes seen on shows, you can't trust your work to be safe in this environment....this *hurts* Morphos seriously...as stupid as it sounds, the words
Morphos and crash sounds like they are going to stick around a bit longer.
The perfect situation would be, the Eyetech/Escena stuff goes wrong and nothing
more happends, maybe a few executive updates like "we're not giving up yet" and
stuff like that...months go by....then Morphos would have more time and
the Morphos child bugs/flaws would be notified and fixed without the public
knowing, then at rockstable state, turn up on the next amiga show, and present
the new os and matching hardware.....instant sucsess, everyone would jump at it.
So a year ago, I think Thendic/b-plan and Morphos devels saw a chance to make
and sell a system, and grab the remaining amigausers left, but then comes
Eyetech with similar hardware and Hyperion with an OS...
I think Thendic/B-plan lost their chance there, as it seems most users left
will go for the 'official' solution....and it carries the 'name' (Amiga)
And the company (thendic ? b-plan?) who payed Google for keywords like Amigaone
and Ben Hermans.....it shows desperation, and how desparate they need
the 'name' and community to survive...
Without an 'official' machine, it probably would be the next 'amiga' but
now it's an option in a niche marked, have the battle plan failed ?

>It will also be interesting to see how much the brand "Amiga" means in practice >thesedays. Especially since "Amiga INC" has screwed it up so badly. The whole >purpose with a brand is to communicate certain values and meanings to the >consumers, values that are *constant* and spans across time and thus gives the >consumer a feeling of contineuty and safety. From being a crystal clear >communicator of certain values, the "Amiga" brand now has a very vague and diffuse >meaning to the consumer, IMHO.
the brand 'Amiga' still stands as most ex.users remembers them as they moved
onto a new platform, and isnt part of the comunity any more and doesn't read
any news about it....every time amiga gets on mainstream news sites, it
gets a good welcome, and everyone starts thinking back in the days they
had an amiga, and all the good memorys......and every time certain comunity
members comes along with its dirt throwing, and drags the 'name' down...as
if its their call in life to enlighten the public about the stuff that went
bad, and how lame Bill&co is.
But its usally useless....next time amiga is mentioned, the feedback is usally
good....again they remember the good old days, and not the mud throwers.

>You can call the WBstartup-drawer any name you want to, since you tell Ambient in >it's settings which drawer contains the startup-programmes.
ah...an option :) whats the default setting then(the screenshots i've seen
must belong to an ex.amigan, since he renamed to WBstartup)
with default i mean, whats its name after the os have installed ? just Startup ?

This is just your point of view, there's a lot of people saying exactly the oposite.
This is not only a race in which the one who gets to the end first wins.

I see your point but can't help saying this anyway;
"Amiga" is a registered trademark of Amiga Inc.
By the way, would you like to specify exactly what they did which was so horrible? The delays/broken promises?

> OS5 will never happen.
If so, AmigaInc. will loose my credit, but I don't think so ;-)
> Fleecy said something like that:
> "We split in two not to confuse our partners, and a big partner would not be
> happy at all if we made a desktop OS"
(but it did confuse you, yeah? SCNR ;-)
Yes, that's why the _split_ happened. AmigaInc. is now a 'Mobile Division' here
(AMD, Amiga Mobile Division? ;-) and a 'Desktop Divsion' there. Quite obviously
the first one does concentrate on AmigaDE and won't tell their partners that
the other division does develope AmigaOS5 and following.
And without AmigaInc. we wouldn't expect OS4 and the AmigaOne to be released
soon (rather _never_ :-( ).
And yes, I do have problems with the attitude at Thendic/bPlan some times, but
its the products and plans that count. People are people, but don't judge a
whole company because of some of their people.
Ciao, Alex

"OS5 will never happen. "
Let us not forget that Bill McEwen has already publically stated that AmigaOS5 will be released 12 months after AmigaOS4.0 is released.
And given his track record or never lying, never bullshitting and ALWAYS telling the truth *snigger*, we absolutely must believe that AOS5 will appear in early 2004. No, really we must!

samface typed:

If I may jump in: you can answer a question like that by listing by how bad
or by how recent.
The most recent is the T-Shirt/coupon promotion where no-one received any
T-shirts or coupons (but their money was happily accepted). When asked about
this recently Fleecy Moss, a high ranking Inc. employee who should accept
responsibility, said instead "I don't know. That's not my area."
The most severe has to be the "On Schedule and Rockin'" promotion where people
sent $100 of hard-earned money after being promised a November 2001 release of
OS 4 and Amiga One. Eyetech later revealed that development of the Amiga One
was frozen at the same time Inc. said it was "on schedule and rockin'." The
company that was supposed to be doing OS 4 was instead dropping it. But that
didn't stop Amiga Inc. from making a big announcement and taking the money.
Along the way there is a bunch of press announcements of "exciting strategic
partnerships" but none ever materialize except maybe for Microsoft. So much
for the "Amiga Community" now we all are supposed to support Microsoft?!
And the last one I would bring up was Bill McEwen's "executive update" where
he invoked 9/11 to get himself off the hook for the "On Schedule and Rockin'"
scandal, when in fact development had stopped way before that horrible tragedy
occurred. Of all the things they have done, that is by far the most... well
suffice it to say I have strong feelings about it.

@samface
"By the way, would you like to specify exactly what they did which was so horrible? The delays/broken promises?"
I'd like to ask the experts the same question. I'll definitely agree that Amiga are far from perfect and have made some major logistical gaffes. But what it really comes down to is managing expectations.
We evaluate Amiga as if it were a company that discovered fusion but somehow couldn't figure out what to do with it. In a fickle market where capital is virtually unavailable and partners change strategies at the drop of a hat who gets blamed? A handful of guys that put their heart and soul into trying to resurrect a dead platform and make it meaningful once again. That's "screwing it up?"
There are a lot of people in this community that couldn't write a line of code or get a job managing the drive thru at a McDonald's, but somehow they know better. Here's a clue people: most people don't give a rat's rectum about the Amiga. Try putting together a marketing plan on that one.

And btw, what do you think that MS will do if Amiga Inc makes a desktop
OS that MIGHT compete with windows? Will the let them? NO!

You're kidding right? Forgot the smiley? I'm sure Bill Gates is just shaking in his boots about the possibility of OS5 being available for x86. He'll need to stop that before legions of Windows users drop the platform and flock to the Amiga.
I can hear the negotiations in Redmond: "We'll distribute Planet Zed but you can't release OS5. If you do we'll tear your soul apart."

My dear anonymous coward, if anyone is "making a fool" ofthemselves, it is Bullshitter McEwen telling yet more lies.
The guy states that AOS5 WILL be out 12 months after AOS4.0
Now, either he believes it will (in which case he is a bigger idiot than many have believed so far), or else he doesn't believe it in swhich case why is he telling yet more lies?
So which is it?

Those features have everything to do with the applications available and nothing to do with the OS itself.
A feature list of the OS would reveal things like the layers-based display server (rather than the region-based graphics libraries of all other OSs).
Like I said, I've never seen the Mac OS X feature list before I sat down and used the OS.
