Crowded market, jack of all trades master of none, got on the wrong side of
someone again, ISP pulled the plug or just plain sulking?
Who knows. Perhaps it's just another survival of the fittest thing.

Maybe he just didn`t like it that all the zealots abused his site ;-)

Skippy just made a statement on Amiga.org that the site was hacked.
What a shame... Personally I hope he changes his mind and reopens the site. Yet I understand his frustration.

Duuh finish the sentence!
I think there is a hell of a lot of "redundancy" in Amiga websites. Amiga.org has a clear purpose of being the unnofficial central point for users of Amiga based products.
ANN has a derived role of being a much more freedom oriented group where there
is more focus on *related* articles.
Amiga Unversity is a good collection of links well categorised.
Aminet is a good ( ish ) file server for *ware sharing.
ANN, Amiga-News.de, Amiga.org etc all cover the news aspect as does Amigaart and all the rest.
We can all comment and have a dialogue on each, the problem is would you go where everyone else is talking or comment where you find the news?
To me AmigaRealm did not have a well defined purpose and ended up in the "Yet Another Amiga Links And Forum Site" and despite the owners well meaning attempts
to retain a community each time Amiga.org went down it never really succeeded at that.
At the moment Skippy is hurting and asking "why bother". Well, not to put too fine a point on it you can eat too much cake. If you ARE going to bother ( and a lot of good design went into AmigaRealm ) then I suggest a complete change of mind on what the site is there for to avoid the "oh no another portal" category.
Another point is if you are going to use off the shelf scripts then keep up to date with the most current security advisories...! Sure there is no excuse for
cracking web sites ( and even less for using others exploits ) but there is also no excuse for not closing security gaps as soon as possible.
Sure I am going to get flack for saying all this but it is nothing I haven't
said before - in front of Skippy too but some people can't take criticism reasoning if it's free then the only feedback that is given must not upset the creator to which I say sure, its your webspace but don't expect me to continue to visit it.
My recommendation: Skippy, scrap the site, save the information in a backup somewhere and think about something new to do. If you start to think "I want to rule my own domain" thats a bad way to start BTW.

In reply to Comment 10 (DaveW):
I think one of the biggest challenges to doing an Amiga site is 'what to do if not news'. We already have 5 great news sites (ANN, Amigart, Amiga.org, amiga-news.de and czech amiga news) so there's no sense in doing ANOTHER, there simply isn't enough amiga news for that.
So, you are faced with 'what else' - if you are Back to the Roots, you get a great download archive of legally obtained software from the authors (it's still a mystery to me how they pull that off so well but more power to them). If you are Amiga Realm, Amiga University or AmigaSource (and others in the past like the AWD, whose legacy is being run into the ground by a raging lunatic former webmaster) you try to collect as much information as possible from elsewhere and come up with a few new twists of your own (amiga realm has forums, au has archived websites and a few great downloads like TVPaint and Octamed, B&P,etc., AmigaSource has begun a great 'interviews' series, for example) but there are limits and you end up repeating each other a bit after a while.
If you are one of the more specialized hardware or software sites, you only need go so far because there's only a finite amount of stuff you can/have to write about anyway, and as new hardware has slowed to a trickle, easy to update when applicable.
What I've wanted to do for a long time is get a ton of Development information on the web from the old 'Amiga Mail' folders, etc. (I have a ton of these I could scan in as PDFs but Amiga Inc. won't let me) to try to help those amateur developers out there who need as much as possible but it's not always avail. or you have to look too hard for it.
But I understand where Paul is coming from - you work hard on a site for a long time, it looks good and reflects your vision, and then you get virtually no kudos for it (or they are few and far between) and then you get hacked to boot - not a fun reward for providing a great site at no cost to the user.
I guess you have to simply be satisfied with 'a site well done' and then if you reach a point where you feel you need to move on, do so and feel good about it (and don't come back several years later like a psycho and attack others who are merely trying to do the same thing).

@DaveW and @Kevin Orme
Thanks you for your views.
Much food for thought. Maybe when I've calmed down
a little I'll have a long re-think about AR's future.
For the immediate future the site will remain closed.

Given that I need to say something more constructive as I just ripped apart
AmigaRealm.
Well perhaps combining Kevin Ornes' content organisation with Skippys' design skills....
AmigaFirstAid.org
AmigaHelp.org
Say a Q+A section where people like Bill H can sign up to areas that they are happy to answer questions on. I mean we do this kind of thing informally
on newsgroups and the like but we don't have a useful high profile formal mechanism with a quick turnaround.
Just a thought...
( Not saying your AU design is bad Kevin btw just that Skippys was very good
if cluttered )

Isn't that material all on the Developers' CD ?
Admittedly not well laid out.

maybe, but then why not publish those, too? What good does it do anybody sitting on a CD somewhere. I think if Amiga Inc. is serious about getting more people to develop for the Amiga platform, they need to get as much information in as many places as possible.
The 'amiga mail' folders I have are from various DevCons, etc. back in C= days, and much of it is likely dated but who cares?
I have no interest in owning copyright to this stuff, nor exclusive access. However, when information remains hidden, no one benefits (least of all Amiga Inc.) I just wanna publish. . .:)

I agree 100% with what Kevin is saying. 'No Credit' and 'Lots of Flack'. To run an Amiga website, or any website for that matter, takes alot of blood, sweat and tears. Right now there's not a whole lot going on to support more than a handfull of Amiga sites. To have a good site one has to really put some effort into it. And Paul did just that! To have some A%&$hole to come in a wreck it is just crazy! I can understand Paul saying 'The heck with it'.
One thing that helps is to keep in perspective is 'Who you are doing this for?' Personally I do my site for me. The community comes second! I like it like that. It helps keeps me focused. I'm happy with the site (for the most part) and I know I'm doing good. And I will do whatever it takes to saty on line!
I'm sure Paul 'probably' feels the same way but to think that someone takes pleasure in ruining something that you put a lot of effort is got to be a hard thing to overcome.
Here's to Paul's quick return! (Fingers crossd)
