My A1200/030 takes about that long to boot up as well. I remember reading somewhere that the A1200 (and the A4000?) use IDE hard disks in PIO mode 0, which is what Windows calls 'safe mode'. The AmigaOne will have UDMA, so the drives will fly compared to the old days. I can easily see booting up in less than 5 seconds (including BIOS startup, which is rumoured to be faster than on PCs).
Off-topic: Ben, when are we getting those screenshots? The shakes, man, they're getting stronger! 8)

Great that MOS fans have their own lunatics, like amorel. This way the communities are more evenly matched.

"For unices it would be very simple: all you have to do is to provide the right system calls, which are not much, and then you can just install all the rest of the userland binaries."
I had to say I choked so hard at this point that bits of my bagel hit the monitor.
The right system calls? OK, so lets say X11R6 implemented to retarget to a native
display mode, all the POSIX calls that Linux supports and all of the modifications
that Linus made, the filesystem layout to be the same. The UDS and TCP support
needs to be spot on.
Fork and vFork tend to be a pain to get right as does native POSIX threads.
Then you need to make sure that the addressability works the same, that the
kernel of your "(e)L-BOX" can load the right executables in the right manner
and manage shared objects the same way as Linux.
You MIGHT then end up with something that might load some of the Linux/PPC binaries.
Maybe.
Don't expect them to work at all well though.
Get the interfaces right and you might be able to port applications easier ( if
the compiler is the same as was originally used, I get caught up on exported names
used with function pointers being treated differently more often than not ).
Like I say, syntax and semantics.
Dave.

Actually Im not bothered about Java support ( these tend to be provided
by licensed porters anyway ). Most of the things people moan about being missing
are not base OS stuff anyway.

Too bad you didn't choke to the extent of not being able to come here and spit your bagel on AHN...

Yes, nothing impossible nor difficult to do. If you have any doubt about it, please expose it so that I can bash you directly on that one.
> Fork and vFork tend to be a pain to get right as does native POSIX threads.
Bullshit. You don't get how Q-box works... fork() will be a joke to implement, and vfork() is not even an issue, since you can implement it in AmigaOS too. And, btw, AmigaOS itself, plus ixemul, is an example hopw how these kind of things can be done. In the Q-Box case they can only be done better, since you can provide also binary compatibility.

You're mixing kernel and userland... You are definitely talking like one that doesn't know what he's talking about? Why don't you just shut your mouth up? You'd make a much better figure...
Loading executables is a _joke_, managing shared objects is a matter of _userland_ and can be left ot the userland binaries.
> You MIGHT then end up with something that might load some of the Linux/PPC

No, you _would surely_ come up with something that could run Linux/PPC binaries.

I think the biggest seller of all is games. If Amiga, could contract with ID to release the next biggest game for Amiga only and delay it on PC. The way Micro$oft contracted Bungie to make Halo for the X-Box only, even though they started on the PC.
It would make it sell. There is a HUGE following of ID, but if thye could find a company that is currently unknown making that next big game like Halo, and make it an Amiga only game, the Gamers would buy, it would get the press.
That is the only way they ever will make the sales. Once they have the sales, then the market will be open for companies to make apps, because they can already see the market.

"PAgestream is available also for linux, I hear, and soon also for
AROS."
A Linux port is possible some time in the future, but the top priority
is Mac OS X.
An AROS port is highly unlikely. Deron is committed to an AmigaOS 4
version, however - as Pagestream doesn't need the custom chips, that
should be straightforward to do.

Name which programs you have in mind and I will check out their

That isn't going to happen. The best chance of a killer game is for
some new group to come up with a completely new type of game that
nobody has seen before.
Don't say it can't be done. There was a first flight sim, a first
platformer, etc.
The same applies to application programs. A killer is something you
just cannot get on any other platform, not simply a new product in a
well filled category.

My 1200/060 takes about 12 seconds to boot, but
I don't have too much in the way of startup programs.
With the faster disk controllers and gX
processors, 5-10 second boot times are a
very impressive sell.

Assume ~10 times faster ram & hd. Disregarding time spent in bios this could reduce your boot time to 1.2s ;)
