>Nicholas Blachford: There is Hardware 3D support via the Rave3D and Warp3D APIs
Did they, or do they plan to, licence Warp3D from Hyperion ?

You have to "license" an API?

In reply to Comment 4 (Xeyes):
Warp3D is a commercial product
To write a driver you either need an SDK, which is only available from Hyperion.
Or you need to reverse engineer the libraries, which is a breach of the licence.

MorphOS does not have Warp3D drivers. Only Rave3D drivers...
But still Warp3D applications work thanks to Goa.

Neither... GOA is a Warp3D>Rave3D wrapper. No W3D libs are used.

JRE: Quick and dirty Kaffe port or another reverse engineered JRE or official Sun sources? Which version?

The first grab is nice... the second one is just plain gaudy. The icons look almost "dorky" in a hinky sense of the word. It would take some time to get used to those things.

Nice interview, and nice screenshots. I think was about time that they released some screenshots, and man, do they look nice!! Not only is the GUI extremely responsive, but it sure looks good aswell! I really like the shades of blue. And the icons were really nice too.
And it was a good thing that they showed another skin in the screenshots than those who was previously shown. And more screenshots with more skins is obviously on their way!
Taste is highly subjective, but no mather what your taste is you will be able to find a look for the "workbench" that suits you (even if you will have to make your own custom design). No one can say that "Ambient looks ugly" now, since there is no single look thanks to the skinning abilities. It's only a matter of picking/designing a look that suits you.

I meant that comment mostly in the sense "desktop with realistic true color icons".

1) MOS doesn't have Warp3D drivers, it uses Rave3D as its 3D engine, therefore
drivers are written for Rave3D.
2) The Warp3D layer is just a wrapper around Rave3D, and you don't need any
license to reimplement APIs.
3) Reverse engineering for the sake of compatibility is not illegal in the
European Community.
4) You cannot break a license of a product that you don't have.
5) Licenses are not above law. If law permits you something, a license cannot
forbid it.

A bit of a shame about the icons really. If you look at them individually they look really nice. When you have them next to each other it looks really confusing though, because they're drawn at different angles. It really could do wonders for the overall look if they were all drawn in a consistent manner.
Is this something that will be fixed before release?

@ Thomas W.
"Is this something that will be fixed before release?"
Take a close a look. On one the pictures, there is a window saying "JobboIcons" and one says "OcinelIcons".
Ocinel's icon set is for all geeks and technology/sci-fi fans who absolutely love colourful and varied icons with a futuristic 3D-ish look.
"JobboIcons" are a set of icons which were painted with a flat view in mind. The perspective looks more like 2D. While some icons have slightly different angles (you see them either from above or in front, similiar to MacOSX), the overall look is rather consistent. For instance, they ALL use the same shadow effect so this keeps them from looking too varied for the most part. Overall, "JobboIcons" is a rather conservative icon set in comparison with Ocinel's work.

That kind of stuff can be "fixed" anytime, by anyone. And remember - you are allways free to design your own icons if you don't like the original ones, or to download some from one of the great icon collections on the Internet.

Let's see how this person is described:
"I would like to also mention that Dr. Allan Havemose is also part of our team.
Allan, who just became a proud father for the first time (14 April 2002), was
the Software Engineering Director at CBM with responsibility for the Amiga
operating systems OS 2.1, OS 3.0 and OS 3.1 on the A1200, A3000, A4000,
AmigaCD, and various other platforms. As you know, Allan was more recently
involved with Gateway's effort to resurrect the Amiga. Allan is developing the
Java Virtual Machine for the Pegasos/eclipsis and will work also on the Linux
side of our efforts. He brings professional product development and product
management to our team."
