As I got some mails from people saying that they won't buy Hollywood because I'm supporting MorphOS I have to clarify that there will be AmigaOS 4 version of Hollywood of course. But before this can happen, I need a developer version of AmigaOS4 and because such a version does not seem to be available currently, I cannot do anything yet. But there will be definitely an AmigaOS4 version of Hollywood (if it is API compatible to the classic AmigaOS). So, don't panic and don't send me any more of such threatening letters. It's really astonishing how serious this topic seems to be to some people. Additionally the update to the AmigaOS4 version of Hollywood will be free of charge too (as the update to the MorphOS version was). So if you are interested in Hollywood, you can also buy the program now and get the update for free when AmigaOS 4 is finally available.

is it much work supporting 68k, wos/pup, morphos and soon OS4 ?

What advantages will mos version have, since it got extra features or extended
amiga API ?

In reply to Comment 4 (catohagen):
Same adwantage as someday upcoming OS4 is supposed to have.. Fully native PPC system.

If you have ever coded those wos/pup systems you'll soon realize those systems spend lots of CPU to switching between processors (clearing caches etc) that's waste of time. In MOS no such thing happens, so even on old BPPC MOS runs applications faster than WOS .. And on program like hollwood, speed id good thing to have. And with new 600Mhz G3 systems, we are getting decently close to todays standards.

Those OS4-supporters worry me.. Trying to intimidate developers to support their dream-platform is not right way to make things happen. It's way too early to make solid pledges of support for nonexisting OS... And empty promices are NOT what we need to near.

Comedy.

People who threaten such things, cutting off even their own supply of software in the process, must be particularly stupid.

Initially I found it funny, now I'm simply sick of it.

ANN moderators accused, developers threatened, what's next ?
Supporting an OS is fine but be fanatic to this point is nuts and is self destructive for what left of the community.

I was an what you call an Amiga fan but I don't want to be anymore when I see that.

BTW thanks for the great developers still here that can keep up with all of this. Supporting different Amiga platforms is the way to go to prevent a split of the market that would be fatal. I support this idea 100% and thanks the developers that do it.

I have problems seeing how this will end...how will apps using OS4 api work or
be compiled to 68k or wos/pup or morphos ?
And Morphos have some extended api's too....is it possible to 'emulate' these
api's in OS4 or 68k ?

Will it be possible to run Q-box apps on OS4 ? like running A-box on OS4 ?
Announcement: Hollywood for AmigaOS4 : Comment 12 of 90ANN.lu
Posted by Christophe Decanini on 14-Dec-2002 18:20 GMT
In reply to Comment 11 (catohagen):
The API changes should not be that important for the programer.
We already have different APIs on Amiga for certain things (Audio, Gfx, MUI/reaction ...).
Of course it is still extra work for the developer to have it working on multiple platforms.

I was one of the people that wanted to prevent any split.
Now that the split happened (It would have happened anyway with the 68k / PPC) I like to see applications supported on all of them.
I wish that for example at least a 68k version would be released so it would run on classic, OS4, MorphOS, Amithlon, UAE.
Then of course if we can have a native version that take advantage of the OS special features it would be a big bonus.

" As I got some mails from people saying that they won't buy Hollywood because I'm supporting MorphOS ..."

Wow. Should I laugh or cry? These people desperately need some sense beaten into them. HARD.

So customers like me, who want both MorphOS and AmigaOS, would according to these bumbling fools be better off with Hollywood being discontinued for MorphOS (and potentially for both OSs) because of this Conspiracy of Dunces, rather than seeing it available for what in their sick minds is "the Evil OS" *in addition* to AmigaOS?

OTOH: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

Irrespective of what platform you support this is an amazing act of stupidity.

It must be bad enough developing in the midst of a war zone but this will positively drive developers away. If you loose developers from MOS they will be lost from AOS also, and that counts the other way around as well.

I for one do not object to developers producing software for both MOS AND AOS, in fact it's going to be financial advantageous and given the size of this market developers need anything advantageous they can get.

If developers are drawn away we shall all suffer, and that would be a sad ending to such a great platform.

There is competition between both sides and that isn't always very pretty but we both know developers are key to growing this market and without them neither of us are going anywhere.

If you don't like the fact there is competition, think of this:
MOS will try and outdo AOS, AOS will try and outdo MOS.
In doing so both MOS and AOS will improve, the result is a win-win for users on both sides.

The man with the white polo shirt.

People should rather send an email to thank the author for making new software for the Amiga. I don't care if he does versions for other systems like windows or morphos, I'm just pleased to hear that an Amiga PPC version will be available.

I will defenitely give it a try when I get my (not yet ordered, not until OS4 is ready) AmigaOne-G4.

I think you people are over-reacting.

So what if he got a few bad emails from a few assholes! Who cares.

Did he mention the possible OS4 version when he anounced the MOS version?
If not then he was inviting AOS4 supporters to jump to conclusions and send hate mail. Trolls send hate mail. Non-Trolls would still send mail (but just asking him to support AOS4).

Most developers anounce all the platforms that will be supported in their initial product anouncement.

In the future it might be good to keep our similarities rather than our differences in mind.

ppc.library - PowerUP compatibility layer
or
WOSEmu - WarpUP compatibility layer
or
Exec reimplementation
or
Built-in newicon support
or
Built-in OS 3.5 Glowicon support
or
ARexx port (optional)
or
Built-in wbstart.library
or
Goa - Full Warp3D emulation

correct, for that fact does the *original* Amiga...

I was talking about more generic features such as pre-emptive multitasking, printer drivers in the OS not individual programs etc...
Everything has those.

The point being that if one OS adds a new feature others will also get it.
There's nothing strange or unusual, it's the same in all industries.

As for the list of features, well if you want to run Amiga programs you may as well do it properly...

In a market this small it would be *crazy* for any software developer to release their product exclusively for MOS, or exclusively for AOS4. The amount of work required for port an application between the two is relatively small compared to the effort to write the app in the first place (the APIs being so similar).

It would be better if everyone supported their favored platform by actually *buying* this software, and therefor also suppporting one of the few developers we have left.

"No"? They already did that and will do it again. It's PERFECTLY normal.
If they had kept the original plan, OS4 would be nothing more than a 68k
emulator (take a look at Amiga Inc's "plan"). See? The plan changed at
least once. And don't forget that OS4 was out of question until Fleecy
saw MorphOS running. Yes, this IS competition and this is what will push
the development of both OSes harder. It's good.

If those guys have realized, that for example, FFS 2 is included in both OSes?
Or Mui... Its development is continued by "the Evil himself" Ralph Schmidt...and it will
be also on OS 4.0, all changes made on Mui must be included in the source dir, so every party benefits..

Come on guys! Write mails now to Hyperion you won`t buy OS 4.0 because they support MOS.
And you MOS Fans, write Mails to Genesi, you won`t buy MOS because they support OS 4.0

P.S.
Just before someone complain, don`t take it to serious ;-)
