Birdie Shoot goes Gold, Knights&Merchants in Betatesting Arcade fun shooter "Birdie Shoot" has gone gold for the Pegasos/MorphOS. New MorphOS users will soon be able to take part in the addictive digital hunt for all sorts of crazy Birds that takes place in 4 great levels. Best of all: Birdie Shoot comes free with the new operating system MorphOS. Our next game for the Pegasos/MorphOS will be "Knights&Merchants". The 800x600 version of this great empire builder has already been demonstrated at the ARC in Aachen earlier this month. Now in the final stages of betatesting are both versions of the game including the 1024x768 version of "Knights & Merchants". More information on both these titles can be found in the Projects section of our homepage.

If I remember correctly there were a brief motion video shot from that game (running on MorphOS) in the video from the Retro Computing 2002 show.

I am also very curious about Knights&Merchants. That one really looks interesting. Exactly my type of game! ETA 01/2003.

I must say that epic has some really interesting titles coming up!
:-)

I played both games in Aachen. Birdie Shoot is really fun :) And K&M is a game
I have waited for a long time now since the last Foundation version has been
released.

Also impressive that both games were ported from Mac to MorphOS in less than 10
days for the very first versions in Aachen IIRC.

Really?! That certainly looks promising for the future!

Curious about if this will be true to 3D titles, when ATI 3D support will be finalized. It'd be devastating. :]

In reply to Comment 6 (takemehomegrandma):
The speed of our ports is made possible by a software library similar to SDL that allows us to write for one API that works on all the platforms we support. This way 90% of development can be done on a comfortable system with a good debugger (Microsoft Visual C++ on Windows)

Our library currently doesn't support 3D but this is in the works, as long as the target platform supports OpenGL or an API compatible version of it (eg MESA) ports to other platforms (once the initial porting work is done of course) should be just as quick as the current 2D stuff.

([JC] - Are you an official source of information? I suppose so!)

It seems like the library is developed in-house. I just wanted to say that I think that you have choosen a good strategy there.

I guess that some efforts has been put into that library and I think that you have done the right thing. All investments in portability is investments into the future IMHO. That kind of investments will pay off. And that kind of efforts is something that developers of smaller OS:es should be interesting in supporting in a *very* active way. Have they?

BTW, I will buy every single game, that is for sure. Only quality titles there. And that is at least *one* sale of each game!
:-)

/takemehomegrandma - drunk, at this time of day, at this day of week, but what the heck. It's soon christmas!

(BTW, I can sincerely recommand www.m1live.com for those of you that has a broadband connection and like the "softer" kinds of trance/dance music.)

You could say so since as I'm Peter Mulholland, responsible for porting work on Simon2, Feeble Files, parts of Knights and Merchants, and on future e.p.i.c projects :)

I must further point out my posts and opinions on ANN are my own and not neccesarily those of e.p.i.c interactive... standard legal bla bla to stop me getting into trouble with the boss :)

Then easy 3D portability will be true for e.p.i.c-s forthcoming 3D titles made with this library, or maybe affects existing e.p.i.c. 3D titles as well?

What titles are planned for conversion?

You say the library is similar to SDL, would you satisfy my curiosity and tell us what specifically made it a better choice to use (develop?) this library rather than SDL ?

> What titles are planned for conversion?

Future e.p.i.c titles that will require hardware 3D support in some form will use the new library.

Technically this means any title using the library can be ported to MorphOS but this is not decided solely on a technical basis.

> You say the library is similar to SDL, would you satisfy my
> curiosity and tell us what specifically made it a better choice
> to use (develop?) this library rather than SDL ?

Several reasons:

1) We were not aware of SDL when we started development of Simon2, indeed I'm not even sure it existed then. You could say we beat them to it :)

2) We prefer to have control of the API and core code ourselves. This makes it easier to debug any potential problems.

3) I, personally, object strongly to the GPL and all derivatives of it, specifically the 'viral' nature of the licence. (I do *not* however object to open source, and we use/plan to use several BSD-licenced open source libraries)

hey JC! , what about AMIGA OS then? , left us out in the cold now?

is this a race or not? , 1 will surely fail, why not support both and dont care about the race? (and then maybe 1 of em wont die (the OS'S / systems)

If you refer to OS4, we can't write for something that doesn't yet exist. When it does we will evaluate support for it.

Currently MorphOS exists and works well (regardless of what the trolls will tell you) therefore we support it.

Yup, that's what "goes gold" always has meant.

But if I'm not mistaken, Brad Ray is a.k.a. "mounatin_myst" on amiga.org, so you'll have to forgive his ignorance and mindless trolling. He apparently can't help it. Just be happy that he can't post huge GIF-anims of game characters here.

I will not purchase an Amigaone board because i am not a sad b*stard who wants to be Eyetechs lab rat,

Release a proper full board with a fixes in place and stop using the amiga users as LAB RATS for your mad professor experiments.

You are not mistaken.
It is mountain_myst.

I am not trolling, and I do not need your forgiveness for posting.
I could help it if I wanted to help it...
But I don't want to "help it".

You are very rude for calling people ignorant.

If I could post giant anims, I would surely post one just for you.

And just to clarify...
You're the one who's trolling.

and further more...
I don't post on amiga.org any longer because of cruel people like yourself.
If you don't like mountain_myst, then please don't speak to or about him.
I've never done any harm to you.

I am not the one acting ignorant.
I just wanted to know what "goes gold" meant.
And yes, I did make a sarcastic remark.
But that's not exactly your problem, now is it.
