GrassHopper have announced their latest version of PageStream for the Amiga and other platforms. V4.1.5 is to be released this weekend. With future updates to include PDF Export support and Word Document import/export support, amongst other things. Mention of an AmigaOS 4 version also is included in their latest update. They are also offering an XMas sale price of $90US for customers referred by existing owners. "PageStream4.1.5 Christmas Release!
Christmas is still a few more days away, but we have been hard at work preparing your Christmas gift from us! The initial Windows release is available now, and the Amiga release will be available Saturday. Macintosh should follow before Christmas. Why are we telling you this now? Because as Christmas draws near, you might easily miss the announcement. While others are laying flat on the floor from one more helping of turkey, you can be exploring 4.1.5. Ok, maybe it is just us that lives and breaths PageStream. Humor us! Besides, it might just be worth your while to visit the web site on Christmas day ;-) Registered owners of 4.1 can download the latest update by going to www.grasshopperllc.com, and clicking on downloads in the left hand menu. From the main downloads page, click on your product/platform and enter your registration number and password to gain access. We will also be posting updates to 4.0 Windows just after Christmas!

Special Deals for Special Customers!
PageStream has always been a great product, and our customers have always been the best advertising a company can have! Together we form a winning combination! Now we are doing our best to make it even easier for you to help spread the word! Until the end of the year, any new customers, that are referred by an existing PageStream customer, will receive a full registered copy of PageStream4.1 on the platform of their choice for only $90! Owners of older versions of PageStream can also receive the latest version for no more than $90!! Of course, PageStream4.0 customers can upgrade for even less! Lastly, users who need a second (or third) copy of PageStream for a coworker, family member, or other associates may do so for only $60 as long as the additional copies remain registered to the original owner for the first copy. Hurry, these offers are for a limited time! You won't find a better time to share in the power of the most functional desktop publishing program ever! For additional details, or to order, visit us at www.grasshopperllc.com.

Surveys Surveyed!
As you may recall, we first asked you back in August which platforms you are using to guide us in future platform development. If you missed the survey results on our web site, they are still available there. (As a quick recap, Amiga OS4/Amiga One, Mac OS X, and Linux were clearly the winners! Don't be surprised to hear more soon as these gifts of Christmas future materialize.)

In our recent survey we asked what features you would like to see in future versions of PageStream. Considering the wide variety of PageStream users, we were not surprised to receive a broad spectrum of suggested features. A great many of our survey respondents also took the time to let us know that while they could always use a few more features to make their design work go quicker, they loved PageStream already! Talk about a good feeling! However, we still had to find a winner. A free feature just for helping us! The most asked for feature (just barely) was font embedding in PDF output. So look for it in the next major, free, update to PageStream4.1! Even more amazing, is that after discussing it, Deron felt that an actual new feature should be added. So not only can you look forward to improved PDF output, but we are also going to add a Microsoft Word import/export filter which was another frequently asked for feature! Wow!"

There are versions of Pagestream for Windows and Mac, and a Linux
version is planned. Deron still has enough Amiga customers to justify
compiling an AmigaOS version.

A poll was conducted earlier this year to guage interest in porting to
other OSes, and IIRC Mac OS X (as opposed to 9) and Linux came out
top.

If you are thinking of MorphOS, presumably the current version runs on
MorphOS under emulation? Anyone here using Pagestream on a Pegasos?
Does it print OK ?

There's no reason for them to port to MorphOS, if there was any interest from actual customers, they had the opportunity to vote for it in the poll, instead, people preferred AmigaOS 4 support. And how is OSX/Linux a non existant platform? And how is their existing support of AmigaOS 3.x and Windows and Mac OS9 a non existant platform?

Get off your trolling.

Yeah, it's pathetic that people complain when developers are actually
doing something.

Now I'd really like a MorphOS version but I guess my opinion would be
worth more if I bought the program.. too bad I can't afford it before
the new year, I hope the price isn't going to increase too much..

Deron would have to buy a Pegasos computer, spend time learning how
it differed from other platforms, install updates, etc.

It wouldn't be worth it for sales in single figures. If hundreds (or
even dozens) of users are running Pagestream on the Pegasos under
emulation in the future, then things might look different.

Is anyone here running Pagestream 4 on a Pegasos?

Yes, but it did attract a good number of votes in the Pagestream
platform poll.

It's not likely that a port to OS 4 would start in the near future.
Nothing can happen until the OS is available. But as with MorphOS, it
should be able to run Pagestream fine under the 68k emulator, which
(assuming it works well) should give something like a 400MHz 68040 on
a G4. That will be plenty fast enough for Pagestream.

Even a 50MHz 68060 is usable, although rather slow.

You shouldn't really draw *any* conclusions from Internet polls. There is *much* too much uncertainty involved. Polls like this only tend to attract some hardcore geeks that keeps hitting the reload button (or votes from different IP addresses) untill their chosen alternative "wins". And who says that those people will ever be a paying customer anyway? I would seriously consider buying that software if it were available for MorphOS. I really would. But *I didn't even know* about the poll! You see the problems with basing strategic business decissions on Internet polls and webpage visitors statistics? They say nada! If they wanted to do a cheap and brief marketing research they could have started with asking their existing, registered, customers of their oppinion ...

The efforts for a developer to get a Pegasos up and running is *very* low. It's more a matter of which choices and prioritys you make. I of course respect their decision, but I think it's kind of sad.

But it _is_ available for MorphOS. You just buy the Amiga 68k version.
It will run plenty fast enough. The whole point of providing a 68k
emulation in the OS is to allow you to use existing (up to date)
programs for the Amiga.

If later on there are lots of people running PGS on the Pegasos, they
can request a native port. It would run about twice as fast.

Exactly. And no one knows anything about the future userbase of the OS4 platform, and polls do not give any guidance whatsoever.

I guess. I haven't tried it myself. But it's listed under "Software/DTP" on www.pegasosppc.com, so I guess that someone have tried it ...?

But this is one of those applications that really would benefit from being PPC native. And really, porting software to (and from, I guess) MorphOS is often very easy. It will take more efforts to port the software to Windows and Linux than to port it between AmigaOS and MorphOS, since those have practically the same API. So I guess it's more a matter of choice by the developers ...

Well as said above, I guess the best way to get a MorphOS port is to buy the software and request a native port. I might do that. No. I *will* do that!

If not, then they should. It's an excellent program - it has far more
features than Pagemaker, for instance.

"But this is one of those applications that really would benefit from

Not as much as a 3D rendering program or an audio mixing program, and
I think for most users 6x the speed on an Amiga will be enough. But a
further doubling in speed will do no harm. You could get that from
installing a 1.2 GHz CPU as well as from PGS being ported to native
code. The faster CPU would benefit all programs.

The easiest way to get the "_bullet" stuff that is needed by this and
other programs would be to buy an OS3.9 CD. All the Intellifont stuff
is in the "Workbench 3.5" drawer on that.

For other fonts, Pagestream can use Truetype and Type 1 fonts which
are available everywhere. The Agfa fonts give the best screen display,
but the others print well.

Having spoken directly with the company about AmigaOS 4 they stated to me as:

a. They have an existing (Mac) PPC version
b. They have existing Amiga OS version
c. They'll have a current Amiga OS version as 68k for any version they wish to use as a start for porting to PPC

That given these 2 porting of it to AOS4 would be a relatively easy job. How MorphOS's API's and programming guidelines for Native applications differ to AOS I don't know. It may differ in ways for all we know which make it a lot more difficult to port.

And there is the issue raised previously, there needs to be a demand for it for it to be ported. How many of the MorphOS existing customers/buyers-to-be will PURCHASE a copy of this? Based on this thread I can count 3 ;) But that's no indication how many out there will buy it, and how many will just say they will. This is why their poll of existing customers gave them an accurate reflection of what paying customers want currently. The future beyond that is yet unwritten.

> The efforts for a developer to get a Pegasos up and running is *very* low

It should be (for anybody, not only developers) but porting an AmigaOS3 application to native Morphos may be anything but easy. If you are lucky, you can do it it in a few days. But it might also take months.

For a start, it depends on how easy the project can be ported to gcc. gcc can be a nightmare if much of your project exists in form of libraries or devices. These things tend to be very compiler-specific. And gcc, to my knowledge, doesn't have a source level debugger, if you ever run into serious problems. Then there is the problem of not-so obvious PPC issues, like endianess. It can take a while to locate endianess-related bugs. Finally, some parts of Morphos differ from their AmigaOS3 counterparts, and you will have to perform extensive testing. For example, Morphos uses a diferent installer. I've seen the 68k version only and it sucks (crash prone). Many installations will not work with it. Other issues: different rexx interpreter (if any at this time, I don't know), dependency on third party libraries not running correctly under Morphos, etc.

And... most of those potential issues (like endianess, GCC and librtaries etc..) are as (or even more) likely to be with OS4 too. So would it be better to start now with MOS port and then after code is GCC clean do OS4 dependant adjustments?

I've been using Pagestream since before it was called that (was Publishing Partner?) and it was first on the AtariST. When Pagestream first made the platform leap I was so happy to be running it on a cooler computer. I'd like to see that again.

For all those going on about the difficulty in porting PgS to MorphOS: unless my memory has failed me badly, Deron (the developer) made the jump from SAS/C to gcc some time ago. It did cause problems, but should be long past by now. The only remaining difficulty is MorphOS/Amiga3.1 differences which, given the nature of MorphOS, are probably (though not necessarily) minimal.

The working in an emulator I'd be a little concerned about: there were problems in the UAE jit that seemed to only affect PgS and then only in little ways (so you didn't necessarily see them right away).

Ah well, I'm just happy that a linux version is in the works...
