New article from John Chandler : Comment 1 of 32ANN.lu

I don't know this John Chandler but it seems like he has some sources of information. At least he say so. If the conclusions *he* draws from the information he has is correct, then it's really good news for the A1 buyers; OS4 may be released shortly after the A1XE. That means end of January? I sincerely doubt this myself. But since Bill McEwen (AmigaInc), Ben Hermans (Hyperion), and Alan Redhouse (Eyetech) said a month ago:

"Nov 19, 2002 - With the AmigaOne now shipping and AmigaOS4.0 in its final stages of development and testing, the time has come to begin letting the rest of the world know the good news, that the Amiga is alive, well and ready to let the World have fun with computing again."

... it's perhaps not impossible? Anyway, the lack of official information is painful!

BTW, in another article by John Chandler ("World of Amiga", Published on November 2, 2002) he writes:

"But how much longer do we have to wait until AmigaOS 4? Well, it's 90% complete (or maybe 99%, depending on who you ask) with the remaining modules due to be completed in the next few weeks."

Hmm... I wonder how much his "sources" are worth after all. It seems a little bit too optimistic IMHO. But who knows ...

In reply to Comment 5 (takemehomegrandma):
In my experience, Amiga journalists have almost always been overly optimistic. Back in the early to mid-nineties, I would be reading about all those shiny new Amigas (A2400... A5000, etc.) that never materialised. Yet, all these mags (be it Amiga Plus, Amiga Format, etc.) made it seem that release was imminent, or at least a real possibility.

And I guess that a printed-press journalist who wants to retain his readership can't really spread doom, but needs to focus on the good news that ensure that people will stick around for another month, and another magazine sale. Some of this applies to the Internet, too, even if things are less tangible on here, and I don't necessarily have to worry about reaching the widest possible audience because I'm not doing this for a living.

(This is not to complain about John's writing in any way, but just a generic remark going off on what I consider an interesting tangent.)

I used to like John Chandlers articles but now it's plain obvious that he is one of those people who would say anything to put Amiga in a good spotlight (same goes for Mike Bouma). It's all great and coming real soon but he's been telling that well...in all his articels really...problems is that nothing comes.

AmigaDE? Where? Haven't seen anything. Oh yes, ofcourse, he's just hinting at the great things to come soon (well, they are coming soon for 3 years now). Please wake up. I even wonder if there are still people working at Amiga Inc. Do they have offices? No one knows. They don't even have the resources to put together a dev kit.

OS4? Don't expect it before summer 2003 at earliest is my guess.

A very dissapointed amiga user.

All i know for a FACT is that the great Amiga Inc managed to sell 4 games in a gamepack. It took them 3 years, the games aren't made by them and probably mainly developed with what Tao made. That's all i know. Maybe you should take a look at their amazing Amiga Anywhere site (Amiga nowhere should be better) to see what i mean. It is quite hard to find a category in there that has products.

We really are moving forward now :)

I disagree. It sucks that they aren't more up front, but a company being
tight-lipped about a to-be-released product is nothing new.

Frankly I couldn't care less what's said right now. It's the product
that hits the proverbial shelf that really matters.

Were talking about a product they've already _collected money_ from the customers for. The customers are not getting what was promised, and Amiga is remaining silent.

In reply to Comment 13 (T_Bone):
That's true, and I do understand the frustration surrounding the silence,
but also you had to know when you pre-ordered that there would be at least
_some_ waiting before the product appeared. Even porting an existing OS
takes time, and I'd honestly prefer to wait even a few more months than get
an OS that was pressured and released with a few glitches. I'm not *that*
impatient, but I'm probably alone in looking at it this way I suppose.

Amiga has only 1 shot.

They have to release a virtually bug free, ultra 1.3 to 3.1 compatible OS. They already had a "beyond their control" HW problem.

Taking more time hurts them, but releasing dodgy SW/HW will bring things to an end.

All I know is, I can't wait to have fun and enjoy computing again.

w98 is not fun. Shadows of Luclin won't load and sony won't talk to me, and I'm NOT buying xp. How can you have fun when half a dozen prgs keep saying
"download the upgrade" every week? Then you're forced to reboot to activate the "upgrade". Can't get the USB going. Blah, blah, blah....

My A2000 isss toooo slooowwww, for fun anymore.

Amiga! Fun and games, oh, and fun!

Hmmm... Amiga Inc proceeds dog slow, so what, let them, who cares...

If there is someone a little bit interested in AmigaDE, here can be found some interesting readings:
http://www.getboinged.org/gbnews.asp?A=204 (lookback to the year 2002, especially Jarno van der Linden interview)

The rest of you, forget about AmigaInc/AmigaDE (untill/if they deliver).

Part of the XE delay is that a manufacturing run using a new mask is due and Eyetech because they were already delayed by the motorola delivery decided to wait for this run.

I think if Eyetech had asked, most people would have agreed with this decision.

The lack of public information is painful, and I'd be lying if I said it didn't hinder what I can publish. When I talk to others writing articles on the Amiga, they're in a similar position. The current article is really not what I had planned, and if I'm honest I'm not overly happy with it. Gosh, me being unhappy with something? :-)

Yes, I am optimistic. I have sources very close to Amiga/Hyperion/Eyetech and what I have seen and heard from them doesn't change that. I'd be lying if I didn't say that, as a general user, I do feel frustrated at times even when I know part of the real story.

Ummm. Priest? What is your source for saying that Eyetech is adding on-board sound to the XE? I haven't heard anything, and it seems a bit dubious to me.

I've worked in the custom PCB industry, and it takes more than a couple weeks to 1 month to add a feature to an exsiting PCB. There's the schematics that need to be drawn and incorporated into the exsiting schematics, the layout and routing (which also includes things like signal analysis to make sure parallel signals on busses reach the same place within the clock cycle, and don't crosstalk, etc...). Then you need to have the boards manufactured (because it's the first run of a new design you need to add artwork lead time to convert the computer files to what the manufacturing process uses). The process usually takes at lease 2 months.

I just don't see Eyetech having enough time to add a feature to the board just because the CPU's are running late. Oh, I haven't even gotten into cost here. Why would Eyetech throw away all their XE boards and create new ones? PCB's are expensive, and I'm sure Eyetech doesn't like burning money.

Eyetech doesn´t add squat to anything. Well, maybe they´ll have to pop a dongle ROM into an empty socket themselves. Just any fab or distributor can't be trusted to handle that preciousssssssssssss hardware monopoly token, now can they?

Eyetech is merely yet another dealer/distributor. They get to sell whatever Mai has to offer. When the Teron PX (='AmigaOne XE') exists in a shape and form appropriate for an end-user market, then Eyetech can sell it. Just like any other dealer (Terra Soft, Inguard, Mai themselves, whatever). If on-board sound is to be incorporated, the dealers will have to wait for Mai to do that, if they haven't already.

No, it doesn't. It mentions dual CPU modules for the Teron PX, which is only news if you haven't followed Mai's product line during the last year.

Pretty uninteresting article on the whole, more of a summary of the meaningless marketing that's been produced during the last couple of years, and everyone of us who have followed what's really happened know that much of it is simply untrue or just hypothetical prospects. It's one more of those articles aimed at "the Outsiders" only to say "AmIga r0xx0rz" (even though there is no more 'Amiga' that can 'r0xx0r'). It's similar to the pathetic poll-stuffing that we Amigans love so much. Are we that ashamed of anything Amiga related that we must make up excuses, lies and unrealistic expectations to the outside world, while we inside our own circles moan and whine over the real problems and bullshit? It's not like things will get better if we show a false happy face to the outside. What do these Boumas, Chandlers and poll-stuffers hope for? That "The Outsiders" will be FOOLED so to speak to buy a Teron board to run AmigaOS, no matter what they might think of it all after they've handed over their money?

It's all so dishonest and ludicrous.

That's old news (November 27, 2002) to the people interested in AmigaOne but anyway...

..why do so many people have such a big hang-up with the fact that AmigaInc arent
designing the PCB and manufacturing it themselves??

so many companies now operate in this way, its normal!!!

AmigaInc dont have (and couldnt afford) 30 board designers/engineers. why pay for something that can be outsourced a lot cheaper?

DCE make the Pegasos, but they dont sell it, Thendic do!

perhaps you'd be at ease if the MAI fab plant slapped an Amiga logo on the PCB
and added a few words from a B52 song to the underside?

last time i looked, the last A1200s werent made in a C= plant
