Just a small note: CManager is now available under the GPL license on SourceForge. Have fun.

So come on who wants to continue the development?!

The source for aweb is sitting and waiting to be developed at http://aweb.sunsite.dk. We just need some more *active* developers. :-)

...how does this GPL'ing affect any programs which use CManager?

i guess so long as they called it as a external library function
they are okay? Or is there something hidden in the legalities
which says that its okay to use older pre-GPL versions of code?

In reply to Comment 3 (alan buxey):
Not at all. If you use a program the way it was intended to be used, that doesn't affect your "using" programm. (Like, if your non-open-source version control software uses the GPL'ed "diff".)

The GPL only kicks in if you modify the code, or build on it (e.g. you are building a "better CManager").

That's of course oversimplifying but should answer your question.

In reply to Comment 2 (Henrik Mikael Kristensen):
Do you want to know what's wrong with AWeb? Communication. No one communicates
with each other. Open source only works if people swap ideas and comment
on other people's work. Unless there is a super-secret development channel
other than aweb-dev@sunsite.dk there is no dialogue taking place at all!

Exactly my point a while back: GPL or not GPL won't change a thing. You "just" need coders and organisation and agreement between them (i.e. people should follow the same ideas). If you achieve this, you can release new versions of those tools and even get some money from it.
If you go GPL, you won't have a chance to do the last one...

Is there someone, willing to create a consortium of coders with strict rules, where earnt money is split against all people involved, where more than one guy are taking the decisions ????

In reply to Comment 5 (Anonymous):
That's right... there's no dialogue. And I don't know if it's because people aren't interested in keeping up development or if some are waiting for others to get started. I should check up on the interest...
The only thing there is to do is to take a look at the sources from CVS, solve the problems and get some development going. Bugzilla is up and those who are signed up should start posting bugs and feature requests there. Everything is ready. It's just a matter of diving in and get going!
We might just end up with the best Amiga browser ever, if enough miracles happen. :-)

In reply to Comment 4 (Solar):
Well, you forget that CManager has a library (not to mention, a MUI class) that is used by several external apps, and the GPL is very unforgiving on this point .. non-GPL programs can't "dynamically link" with GPL code, only LGPL allows this.....fortunately CManager provides a special exclusion clause for this (since alot of commercial closed-source apps (like Voyager) use it)...- CISC

In reply to Comment 9 (Sigbjørn Skjæret):
To avoid doubts, I've just added this note on CM's page:

"free programs are automatically granted permission to use the library/MCC even if they are closed-source/non-GPL compliant. For commercial products, please ask first, unless you already have an agreement with me."
