What could have been...

" Although this product will almost certainly never see the light of day (given the distinct lack of miracles in the current Amiga market), I have received numerous requests to provide a list of features of The Product Formerly Known As Amithlon2, or "Umilator". So here is that list." - Bernd Meyer

Also check out "Umiblog" - Bernd "Bernie" Meyer's random ramblings and weird wailings.

You really need to get this out there by any means necessary.

...as i've always thought , an Amiga emulator done properly
(i'm not sure whether this 'feature list' is just to rub
more insult to injury though....certainly this is the product to
buy and run on x86!!!)

for those that want to remain in the os3.x era I seriously
recommend this if you want speed....i'll take the os4.x route
and heavily lean towards apps ported for that

Except that you can "buy and run" it. The feature list is not so much to rub salt in the woulds as to show what certain parties did not want the people to get, lest it made their efforts look pathetic.

It should be pointed out that these were not proposed features but completed ones. The "proposed features" list is something else entirely. :P

No point in recommending something that can't be bought. As for the OS 3.x - OS 4.0 thing, I remind you that Ben Hermans already said some of the OS4 modules were considered for licensing for Umilator use, so it would have become a sort of OS3/OS4 hybrid, giving developers a better chance of supporting both. Sadly, it's all in the "might have been" filing cabinet now.

Please. This is getting ridiculous. Every time I read about Umilator it just annoys me even more that I can't buy it. I'm actually pissed off at the way it was handled. I mean, it's _the_ killer Amiga emulator. It's everything Amithlon was supposed to be, and then some more. Arrgh...

If I'd done all that work I'd sure as hell wouldn't want to waste it. Think of it as your baby and let it out into the big bad world and watch it develop into a mean kick ass piece of software. I'd find that satisfying.

That's quite the feature list! Very impressive. I think I've made my opinion on this matter pretty clear on previous occasions. I think right now all I can say is this: Bernd, perhaps it's time to forget about Umilator (unless your really think you can bring it to market) and perhaps consider porting OS4.0 to x86. You obviously have amazing talent, might as well keep doing what you do best! Although porting OS4, which is still unfinished, might be more work it could also be more rewarding. Just a thought.

are you serious ? the users aint the enemy, the users are every companys

Other OS companies are the enemy if any enemy needs to be pointed out, microsoft,
apple and even morphos.
Move those users over to the amiga platform, amithlon/umilator may help with that.

He did say he could not see how it could ever increase the size of the user base, and went to great lengths to explain how no PC user he knows would be interested in using AmigaOS on x86. I don't think there was much doubt about his meaning really.

> Not like you to be so bitchy, Bill.

Well, considering HJF decided to go into his usual sulk and blame the trolls - read: people who politely and respectfully challenged the wisdom of his views - I think I'm quite entitled to be bitchy. No one has a right to *claim* godlike wisdom, or to supress the right of free people to ask questions and examine motives. Not even the Friedens.

Being widely blamed for upsetting someone elses overinflated and oversensitive ego only makes it worse. Call me completely unrepentant. :/

Great a list of Vaporware features for a Vaporware product. I'm sure it'll run all Windows 2003 Server applications and Linux Apps at 1.5x speed of any comparable processor. This is JUNK! This isn't news but rumor mongering. Who care if it's never going to be available. Developers should SHIP not waste time on making references to something that's not going to occur!

I don't care for Linux Amiga emulators that can't even run warpup/powerup apps.
If it had been a full emulation of an amiga then I would be more interested. I know the phase5 boards are expansion boards, but these expansion boards represented the official upgrade path (powerpc) on this platform for years.

I know, I know, but the brains behind all of these emulators....the team over at UAE hasn't yet done an emulation of the phase5 boards....well, so be it, but that would have made it interesting for me.

It benefits "software investment protection", this is important in the business world.

In X86 world, “software investment protection” is very important, thus the X86 boat anchor will be here to stay. Note that 32bit software category is defined as legacy, not just 16bit stuff.

Note that, AMD's Athlon 64 and Opteron solution has fixed the 8 general register limit. It delivers benefits of future 64bit computing while offer leading edge X86-32bit performance i.e. "best of both world" computing.

CPU and motherboard distribution channels doesn’t grow on trees. Note there are +40 motherboard vendors for AMD Athlon 64 and Opteron platforms. Which is significant compared to Intel Itanium solution.

Then again, Intel has plans to do a major upgrade to the Pentium 4's core in ~2005. Current Itaniums only has a crap X86-32 compatibility, which doesn’t stop Intel in fixing it in the future releases.
