The Aminet CD series was cancelled this month, and Amiga-News.de interviewed Urban Müller, the Aminet founder, to find out why and ask a few questions about Aminet's long history and hopefully long future (it is just the CDs that are being cancelled, not Aminet). I remember way back when that everyone who uploaded original software to Aminet was eligible for a free CD. I wrote some stuff that I put on Aminet, but I don't think I ever applied for the free CD back then, oh well! It's okay, because I didn't have a CD-ROM drive on my Amiga. ;)

I did too upload some of my own stuff to AmiNet, the first time my programs appeared on an AmiNet CD (nr 10), I got it completly free (free shipping), but after that it changed to you had to pay for the shipping. That was IMHO quite nice.

I wonder how AmiNet will handle MorphOS/AmigaOS4, IMHO it would be time to build up two new trees, one for Classic AmigaOS (the current one), one for MorphOS/PowerUP and last AmigaOS4/WarpOS.
If not, then there must be included a flag to tell for what system the different stuff is for, so you could search for say lzx fro MorphOS without getting the whole list filled with a lot of classic AmigaOS stuff.

but, last, thanks mr Müller for the work you have put into AmiNet and for the work you will put into it in the future.

I've also had offers for free CD's when I've uploaded stuff. Since Aminet is free, I guessed it was because they *have* to offer a free CD to contributors otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to sell the CD's. So I never actually claimed one, figuring it would cost the maintainers' money. I think Aminet is a brilliant and unique resource which the maintainers should get something out of.

Mmm o.k., but why do you want to group PuP with MOS (can run under MOS and 3.x),
and WOS to OS4 (can run under MOS,3.x and sometimes under OS4) ?

I would say a standard descriptor in the readme like the "short:" or "uploader:"
and a filter in the search toll would be perfect.

Why I would group those two together, first of all, both are programs for PowerPC CPUs (in both groups), then they use the same format on the binaries.

You could simplify things and say that MorphOS is an extention of PowerUP and AmigaOS an extetion of WarpUP/WarpOS. Atleast under MorphOS you can still use the PowerUP programs.

I don't think most of the Workbench 3.x users have an PPC card, and therefore less people would like to have all those PUP/WOS listend among the classic programs. But of course, this is my opinion, there would be an easy way to try to solve this and that would be have some kind of voting (if net based, then only allow amiga browsers).

It gets a little bit more complicated if you do that, though, because MorphOS runs MorphOS, PowerUp, WarpUp and OS3.x stuff, and OS4 runs OS4, OS3.x, WarpUp and some PowerUp stuff!

I suspect Aminet is not the only possibility.

Besides AmigaOS related programs there is MOS and AROS, not to mention emulators which here are refering to AmigaOS apps...

There are other formats as well, i.e. sourceforge, for projects that are ongoing in development (which would probably be a better format for such things rather than Aminet).

File, source, applications..... etc...

I also suspect the creator of any such archive would have to be actively interested in using the given platform.

Whatever will be .... will be...
