[News] Genesi needs You! ANN.lu Posted on 18-Jan-2003 17:23 GMT by Senex 150 comments View flat View list In a posting on Amiga.org Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck of Genesi announced among other things a big deal for Set-top-Boxes built using the Pegasos and MorphOS which delivers the necessary cash-flow for the next steps. The team of bplan GmbH, the creators of the Pegasos and MorphOS, and Thendic-France SARL, the exclusive master distributor, will be merged into Genesi shortly. The Pegasos will be bundled with MorphOS, DebianPPC, Mac-on-Linux and suite of games and application software. OpenBSD and Gentoo ports are underway (available before CeBIT) and a Debian Development Team has been identified to create a special Pegasos distro. Discussions are underway for the following OS ports to the Pegasos: BeOS, OpenBeOS, NetBSD, Zeta, and NewOS. SuSE and Mandrake (we will see what happens there) are already running on the Pegasos. Many things still need to be done and we are interested in all constructive involvement. The idea is to rally a technically oriented community to the Pegasos before a mass-market for the Pegasos is attempted. We hope by taking this intermediate step the Pegasos will be more competitive with the BIGGER companies in the IT field. By the way, we will continue to fully support any effort to bring AmigaOS or AmigaDE to the platform (in fact, we have taken the necessary legal steps anyway to make sure this will happen since working cooperatively together has not been possible). We are looking for Developers and highly motivated individuals who want to establish Development Teams and User Groups. In both cases, we will be offering special pricing on the Pegasos, CPU and OS upgrades, and peripherals, as we move ahead. There will be special aspects of our support sites that will provide the latest updates for any aspect of the platform online. We will have a software download section soon. Developers will be paid for their work, as many have discovered already. We are committed to moving ahead in big way. Tell us what you want to do – there is plenty of opportunity! We will be moving into new offices in Paris, Frankfurt, and Luxembourg shortly. The Pegasos was featured last week at the world's largest Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Genesi Booth was found in the Break-Through Technologies Pavilion, South Hall, Booth #29101. We will have a complete Show Report online soon. CES is the current culmination of our announced Show schedule. You can see where we have been at www.pegasosppc.com under “Events.” Before we venture out in mass again, we will be putting a solid marketing plan into place. Shows like CES are expensive. Between CES and Aachen we spent nearly $100,000 sharing our message and our commitment to the platform (not to mention the cost of the other public demonstrations/event support). We are thinking that it may be better to bring our Developers on a working “vacation” rather than to fund the next big Show. In the meanwhile, we will fully support User Groups as we did last weekend in Finland. We really appreciate the support we have in Finland and the capable and intelligent people there. About the future, Genesi has been contracted (and we mean revenue) to build a DTV set-top box using the PPC and MorphOS. This opportunity has created the necessary cash flow and business case to spawn the next level of our success. Strategically, we are continuing ahead with our vision of the eclipsis and the Pegasos will get better and better as the PPC evolves and MorphOS continues to be refined and improved (and thankfully it all ties into smart cards). Please wait for more details from Genesi about which company that is and where these STBs are aimed for. Those who attended the private meeting at the Dorint-hotel in Aachen on the saturday evening during the ARC2002 had already the opportunity to talk to the man behind this company that's interested in MorphOS-PPC-STBs. At least to me this deal looks very promising. It generates the necessary cash-flow and also lowers the prices for us desktop-users due to the much higher quantities. Actually I wonder if it's doable. It's €491 (for thew board only) right now and that is way to much for any STB as far as I can see. This is contract work. Genesi only sells to the company that contracted them to provide a software/hardware solution. Compare it to the PPCBoot contract work Hyperion did. They are advertising the machine and OS at trade shows attracting developers and investors. Amiga on the other hand hasn't made a peep about any plans to do anything for quite some time, makes you wonder whats happening? Although this does not mean Amiga Inc. are not doing anything it sure looks like it when things get so quiet with a company. However OS4 is still looking great and Hyperion are doing their part at least. If OS4 would run on the Pegasos hardware I would give it a serious look, but until then... The approach in Bill and Raquel's message leverages exactly what the remaining active developers of the Phoenix Developer Consortium have wanted to achieve: to support and promote development on a number of OSes and to have a centerpiece that gives it all focus. As QNX has pulled away from the desktop because of Amiga community difficulties and focused on heavy demands for its primary goals, we have been searching for a compelling solution that would allow innovation on the desktop AND elsewhere, and again spur major widespread activities. Having Pegasos as hardware that is capable of running many OSes - some of them Open Source efforts - would allow us a common meeting ground. It has been tough to keep the remaining Open Sourcers hopeful that they could get more going on, and many Amiga-oriented developers have wandered away or sat on the sidelines. But now HOPE is being expressed toward Genesi plans - that these could be the practical means for advancement here and also for desktop-oriented bedroom coder types... It gives us ALL a place to hang our hats. What personally enthuses me about your expressed plans is that the MorphOS DESKTOP can be advanced by cross-fertilization from other development communities - and driven further by finances gained from NON-DESKTOP products and ventures : } This is SO important! A small marketplace like the one the Amiga has represented in recent years simply cannot drive development quickly enough or deeply enough. But a stategy that involves your other products, and OEM placements targeted for specific niches and markets, can realistically keep the financial strength stable and growth-oriented. In essence, those who want a maturing desktop with further opportunities face less risk - and those who are interested in providing niche solutions based around MorphOS and other OSes (and Pegasos, Psylent, and eclipsis) have all that desktop power available to help further THEIR plans. I really would like to see Phoenix become the official third-party devlopment/support body for Genesi so that we could get more done - and more that will see light of day, now that QNX partnership has been deprecated due to previously-mentioned circumstances. So I am working to make that happen. So much work has languished because there was no longer much hope for realistic placement of it. But now perhaps that can change! CES showed me, and probably everybody else who attended and helped you/Genesi, that the demand is there, and that the current and future Genesi platforms are capable of meeting the demands. But what I saw of Psylent looked like CD32/CDTV *done right* and modern. And I think the plan is not to send small amounts of this machine or others to consumers only - but to sell many many many machines as *bundled* solutions to service providers - probably ones who already have a lock on regional markets. This is entirely realistic given the connections and the technology, and I wouldn't be surpised to see per-unit costs plummeting when those untis are tailored for specific niches. What exactly is the barrier to complying with Amiga's licensing requirements? The terms are not the least bit onerous and the consumer appeal of running a sanctioned version of OS4 on the Pegasos would certainly be greater than a bunch of dead operating systems -- all of which will also run on an AmigaOne. Let's be real. The availability of OS4 for the Pegagos would represent a conflict of interest with MorphOS and a potential source of embarrassment if it were to become the operating system of choice. Neither do I, but I do you that sofar every company that dealed with AInc have been betrayed and scamed. Currently it is the other way round: The existing Pegasos could be a market for the non-existant OS4. Why should they tie themselves to an OS of unknown qualitiy, done by a company who has left no chance to throw mud/fud against them ? It would even mean less sold boards, as some potential buyers may wait for the OS-bundled version instead of buying the HW of their choice AFAP. If you read the message from Bill above, it doesn't say Pegasos, it says PPC. It also says DTV, namely Digital Television. A Pegasos would be overkill here. However, many elements of it's design could be re-cycled to quickly make an ideal DTV decoder. Likely use the Eclipsis board, or a cut-back Eclipsis. (Say use an IBM 405 verses a 705Fx) Man, knowing more about this, it's hard to not get over-excited. It's also clear that both companies can't afford to step forward on this issue, but Eyetechs refusal to honor the coupons speaks for itself. Both Nokia and Sharp went into a partnership with AInc, because they were expecting more than PlanetZ for their HW. Sharp searched and found other sources of "content", while Nokia canceled their STB for unknown reasons. Besides, Hyperion will still be able to sell OS4 for full price. Amiga Inc is the one making the payment. Even though they have made the coupon available waaay too early, coupons that have been sold only help Hyperion sell more copies. 'Someone else's product'. Even though Hyperion have writen OS4 Amiga Inc. still owns the name and core IP and they can do whatever they like with it. If they want to offer coupons then that is entirely their choice. It's not like they're taking prepayments for OS X or something. Whatever your view they DO own the operating system so it is NOT 'someone else's product'. Also - Amiga Inc. are doing the refunding - not the dealers. Nokia and Sendo were expecting more than 'Planet Z'. We have absolutely NO proof that this is the reason. As Nokia and Sendo stood only to gain from any partnership deal it is difficult to see this as being the reason. Again, this isn't 'betrayal or scamming' now is it? Sendo searched and found other sources of content. - Actually Sendo fell out with MS and therefore dumped Pocket PC in favour of Symbian's kit. As AmigaAnywhere is currently a PocketPC system this is the likely reason for the break-up. If they're paying the going rate for a professional coder then I'd say they're gonna have to fork out at least 40k EUR per annum per coder (pro rata). So if you're a single coder doing a couple of month's work for Genesi then you'd get maybe 6 or 7 grand? Depends on your experience and what you're working on for them but even so I doubt anyone would expect to be paid that much... people are more likely to do it for the love. But also, I think if a platofrm looks like a gamble with decent odds that more people are going to be willing to roll the dice {I guess I've been to Las Vegas ; }. At a guess, I'd say he was appealing to professional groups (small software houses) as a way of promoting software development rather than the individual programmer who may try and claim a discount for simply writing a "demo" and who may get upset if he's told "No". There can't be that much of a profit margin in the Pegasos and AmigaOne (More so for the Pegasos when you consider how much money they must be spending in adverstising) so they simply cannot discount the board to everyone. After all, if they can't make money out of the deal then the product will fail. That's the problem with this small market, the companies behind these solutions don't just have to produce a product, but they must also generate enough revenue from them to survive and support the user base in the future. I might be buying an AmigaOne, but I very impressed by the way that the Pegasos is being marketed. When people go to that much effort, I have to hope that they have some sucess to reward their hard work. Software houses are a rare commodity in the Amiga market ;-) Anyway, talking about prices, if they don't cut it by half soon, I don't see regular customers coming. No customers, no developers. Even at half price, it would still be overpriced. As STB manufacturer, I'd rather go with an all-inclusive itx board and linux (150 US$ for a board with 1GHz cpu, video, sound). Price reduction is also needed, but could maybe be achieved by redesign of the board, slower processor etc. But it have to be reduced by quite a lot. I agree that the prices on both the Pegasos and the AmigaOne considering that they're new systems with little "modern" software is going to be a major concern and it's not exactly going to make "normal computer users" rush out to buy one. However, I think back to my first Amiga, an A2000, and I remember that the configuration I bought then with a monitor and printer came to UKP2000 (which was $4000 back then). The only software that came with it at that price to demo to my waiting friends was an animated bitmap of a Jarvick 7 heart and an Amiga Basic program that drew cobwebs while playing what sounded like chuch organ music.... I instantly rushed into town and was lucky enough to find a shop that had Marble Madness and Defender of The Crown - the rest is history ;-) Of course, at that time the Amiga was a quantum leap over anything else on the market, but as it sold the price fell lower and lower so hopefully by us buying an AmigaOne/Pegasos now then we'll help build that market that will cause the price to fall and for more people to develop software for us. Alternatively we could all wait and watch the projects fail. It's inhouse product so they can make next revision whenever they need to. And this DTV thingy ain't no more small business for few hobbyists so cost's of new bord design ain't really too much. And optimizing sytem to costs/performace would be important cause they are going to be mass produced. There was no software at all. I spent christmas eve entering the sound program from the manual, while the rest of the family ate cookies and was horrified. History aside, the Peasos is still too expensive. I hope it's not the intense marketing and the shows that drives the price up to its current rather prohibitive state. If it is, they might be shooting themself into the feet.
