IOSPIRIT is pleased to unveil that a distribution agreement with Stefan Burström and the IBrowse Team has been signed and we are now the worldwide distributor for IBrowse (support for IBrowse is still done by the IBrowse development team, though).

Furthermore, we are pleased to announce the immediate release of the eagerly awaited update to IBrowse 2.2. IBrowse 2.3 brings web browsing on AmigaOS to a new level - below is a brief summary of the changes since version 2.2:

- Heavily enhanced JavaScript support, based on JavaScript 1.5 and revision 3 of the ECMAScript specification, allowing access to sites which was not possible before

- Secure connection support is now available via AmiSSL v2, which can be configured extensively in the IBrowse preferences. Importing and exporting of certificates is now also supported.

- Greatly improved general stability and memory leaks plugged

- Improved GUI, including enhanced browser tab functionality (such as drag´n´drop, keyboard support)

- Issues with the ARexx interface have been fixed and new commands added

- Hundreds of other minor and major bug fixes + improvements, and more workarounds added to improve compatibility with broken sites

All these improvements greatly improve the browsing experience, and allow IBrowse to offer compatibility with many more websites than before.

For further information, news and product support, please visit http://www.ibrowse-dev.net/ and our IBrowse-subpages.

well I'm browsing with 2.3 now (upgraded from 2.2, you download the demo and away you go)

the only problem was the installer script which bawked at the end.

a must is to download AmiSSL 2.2 too.

so I'm off to see how it behaves :-) ;-)

What is the status on full CSS1 (and partial CSS2) support? IBrowse is just another toy browser without this mandatory (per W3C standards) seven year old technology.

Ok, posting this with IB 2.3.

Works great, but if you're using AmiTCP and have troubles getting AmiSSL to work, uncheck "Preferences/Settings.../Security/Use MiamiSSL" checkmark.

CSS has been an official W3C standard since 1996. In 1997 it was made a core part of the HTML 4.0 Transitional specification and a mandatory part of the HTML 4.0 Strict specification. In 2000 CSS was made a mandatory part of both the XHTML 1.0 Transitional spec and the XHTML 1.0 Strict spec (font tags were not allowed anymore). It is now 2003, three years after the launch of XHTML 1.0, six years after the launch of HTML 4.0, and seven years after the launch of CSS Level 1.

I left the Amiga community in 1997 and at the time the lack of CSS was becoming a problem, I'm just amazed that it still is.

Is that official Amiga Inc policy then? If one stopped using an Amiga then one may never EVER use one again?

Or is that just YOUR policy to help you avoid having to answer difficult questions (such as whether or not your favourite browser supports long-established standards yet)?

CSS support is an absolute must - I use Phoenix (which runs straight out of the folder, no install needed) on W2K and XP and it is excellent.

Damien is totally correct when he complains about the lack of CSS support, it's extremely handy. No wonder some of the 'standard' HTML tags are already deprecated.

We need CSS.

(I couldn't care less about Javascript tho... :)

CSS is planned for version 3.0. From what I have read on the IBrowse mailing list it would not have been practical to write CSS Support into the 2.x code base as this would require a major re-write.

In the current market we are lucky to get IBrowse 2.3 as it is. I would prefer to wait for CSS support and not have it even further delayed release of 2.3 - since we were pushing nearly 3 years since 2.2.

2.3 is a welcome update and huge improvement over 2.2, just looking at the bug fixes alone... I can't wait to get home and try it!

In reply to Comment 28 (Sam Smith):
Cascading Style Sheets give uh, style. You probably visit mostly sites [like ANN.lu] that still abuse tables to give most of their layout and only style the icing, like using a nice typeface here and there or changing borders/ margins for some boxes.

Increasingly there are sites [like Caoine.org] using CSS to control all of their appearance. So in any of the existing Amiga browsers it looks like the authors didn't make any effort to have the site look nice, but in say Safari or Mozilla it looks gorgeous. Some of them follow the ALA recommendation and use style to hide a message which appears only on non-CSS browsers and says "This site would look better if you upgraded"

At the leading edge people are using CSS to handle navigation menus, leaving non-CSS browsers to move through the site manually step-by-step.

Ultimately lack of CSS doesn't make Amiga browsers unusable, just unpleasant.

Mozilla is also bloated..even its 'minimal spinoffs' , Phoenix
and Chimera are also bloated.

as for standards....well, if most of the page designers out there followed the
standards...instead of using broken code, IE fudges etc etc then the
world would be a better place.

I hate CSS. its a backwards grab at trying to get WYSIWYG onto the Web via
a nice HTML backdoor...I hate going to sites that force me to read green text
on red backgrounds etc

Then turn it off. Or are Amiga browsers too feeble to do that either? I'm using Mozilla and it has no trouble rendering all my sites as black on off-white, preserving the original layout and forcing all text within my preferred readability range (12px to 30px). Half the point of CSS is to distinguish between declarative structure (this is a heading) which should be handled by HTML and display style (this is 48px Times bold red) which is done in CSS.

Anyone using Mozilla that actually thinks it's
better than Amiga web browsers better think again. ;)

Mozilla is one of the slowest most irritating web browsers
ever invented. It may support some "standards" but for
general speed/gui/usability it is one of the worst (in my opinion).
I prefer using Aweb or IBrowse and any improvements made to
the Amiga browsers is just one more step towards removing the
need for Mozilla or IE completely. :)

(I don't know why people that "left" the platform years ago are
still populating Amiga related forums and complaining about new
products they haven't even used before anyway, but...)

The Amiga browsers really are a joy to use after
suffering through the complicated and irriating
internet experience other browsers/platforms offer.
It doesn't take much to realize this...

If you are the type that enjoys reading countless ads,
pop-ups, scripts, shockwave flash and other annoyances
then you may have need of bigger, slower browsers but
I find it hard to believe that someone can not see the
immeasurable value in having a fast streamlined internet
browser at the same time. IBrowse and AWeb are both targeted
at being "light", fast and very functional at the same time
and they achieve this very well. Even browsers that are
supposed to be streamlined on other platforms (Opera) are
dog slow compared to Aweb/IBrowse/Voyager. Speed may not be
everything but speed coupled with great usability is a
sure-fire forumula. The Amiga browsers are gaining much
of the functionality of the "big" web browsers but at least
these "features" can be disabled easily when they are not
required.

Mozilla is sure to appear on the Amiga platform eventually
if you really need if for something? (there are some valid reasons)
(there is a new port in progress right now, but I will personally
continue to use Amiga browsers even after it's released because
I prefer them)

Well, off to try the new IBrowse. :)

If IB supported all the standards that Phoenix and Chimera supported, it would be 'bloated' too.

Besides, Phoenix is far from finished - the authors hope to trim the code down a lot further.

" I hate CSS. its a backwards grab at trying to get WYSIWYG onto the Web via

You're confusing yourself here. One of the plus points of CSS is that the style of the *entire site* can be changed instantly (even by the client visiting the site if given the choice). You've probably seen loads of sites that let you change the entire look by clicking on a radio button ar drop-down menu. Very handy.

Also, your browser should have the final say in the rendering of the page (as in the mono example someone gave above).

Regards,
Dave.

Sorry, but as much as I love the Amiga, I find this bizarre:

" Mozilla is one of the slowest most irritating web browsers

general speed/gui/usability it is one of the worst (in my opinion). "

I use Phoenix (mozilla's browser-spinoff-thingy) and it flys. The UI can be skinned, it has support for mouse gestures (what are they? say most amigans...) and runs straight from the folder.

It's still in beta, btw.

If your setup is as slow as you say, then I'd check your configuration as there is something mighty wrong there.

Regards,
Dave.

I have never seen this. Perhaps you are on a different Web from me.

It certainly should be possible. I prefer a plain layout with as
little attempt at making the page look like a printed page as
possible. Tables work well for this.

ANN seems to me to be very clear and easy to use compared to most
non-Amiga forums.

CSS allows web developers control the look of an _entire_ _site_ by changing one file compared to font tags and tables where you have to do it by hand on each page, on each paragraph. Research CSS, go look up some sites that use it well, and you'll be amazed at the elegance. Font tags and tables are more WYSIWYG, you have to actually _think_ and _plan_ a site to use CSS correctly.

Additionally, all those font tags, nested tables, etc, etc, are terrible for someone using a text reader or braile machine. CSS and other recent W3C guidelines force you to keep these types of visitors in mind.

Not to mention the fact that with CSS on a decent browser you can force your browser to use a style sheet that _you_ define, so if you want to you can read all of the text at 36 point.

The college I used to work for had several disabled students who came to that college _because_ their site was developed using CSS and had other accessibility features so they could actually use the site to find out information about classes, register, etc - none of these standards are supported on Amiga web browsers.
