New SVGA drivers are included with the latest version of AROS available from my site. Also to note is that I now support and recomend the CD-Rom version of AROS, please use it if possible. you can now use Hi-Colour(16bit) and True-Colour(32bit) graphics. It still has bugs, as noted in readme and on my news page, but it should work. Enjoy :-)

Hi, have you thought of adding SNAP support to aros? According to scitech, it should only take 1000 lines of code or so, and you'll have a boatload of display drivers available to you.

SNAP costs money for non GPL'd software. Moreover, the only drivers available for free, under the GPL license, are the VGA and VESA ones, which we already have.

Oh yeah....as an option to using a rewritable CD the smaller 3" CDs or even the business card CD are cheap enough. In fact they have plenty more room for more.

AROS business card CDs...... ;)

Funny you should mention that actually, I was thinking about that only the other day (I found some cheap CD-R Business cards). The current AROS CD-ROM build is only 30megs and you can squeeze 100meg on one of those business card CDs... so it's perfectly possible to have AROS on a business card!!!

I just noticed that the CD image no longer contains Python. Any particular reason for this?

BTW, The business card I just used only held 52 meg. But the 3" disk I know vary in amount... Suspect the business cards do to.

In reply to Comment 3 (Fabio Alemagna):
Ah, I didn't know that. That kinda sucks then, it's GPLd but you can only use the "good" drivers if you pay. Fair enough, but then they shouldn't say how good they're being by releasing under GPL and commercial.

Congrats on aros, btw :)

You realise that AROS is the only open source operating system that has the power to DE-THRONE Linux?

WELL IT WILL!

Me too, 3seas, and more I visit AROS site once a day exploring for signs of life...

;-))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

That is nice news...

And by the way, when downloading the CD are there (perhaps) any TCP-IP stack and a Browser, or are still on the way to go?

Bye,

Raffaele

The website is very rarely these days updated! for "signs of life" get into the ML or vivist the IRC channel! as for tcp/ip its beeing worked on or was last i checked but its going SLOW and with this speed it will take a LONG time unless someone suddenly starts working harder on it! as for browser well you first need a tcp/ip :-).

In the "Free World" ScitTech's SNAP software isn't important anyway. Linux, *BSD, etc. use XFree86 which is the reference implementation of the X Window System. So they get totally free, OS neutral accelerated 2D drivers fo ~200 cards (sound familiar?) as well as 3D drivers for a lot of recent cards.

Is it possible to use some kind of x86 emulator for 2D/3D drivers on PPC? Just remap gfx mem of peecee to amiga chip mem and the stuff related and let x86 emu to make the rest. Is it realisable?

I'm just a beginer in amiga programming, so don't blame for that ;).

That is a nice idea!!!

Once Fabio has got the C++ compiler to work within AROS, I hope the comunity sprit will pick up and maybe we will have a viable alternative to Linux.

This can only happen with a strong communiy, remember the are lots of OpenSource operating systems out there... though, you will find most are based on Linux/BSD, or are POSIX... Which makes AROS, at the very least, the most interesting OpenSource OS Project :-D

Still wondering about PyAROS (AROS python) and why it wasn't included in the CD iso image. For those interested PyAROS is available at source forge. I suppose adding it to a AROS CD is where the use of a re-writeable CD comes inhandy, as you'd need to first make the AROS CD from the image (on the rewriteable), get PyAROS from sourceforge and then create another (business card of larger) CD from combining both. And the same process would go for any other AROS software not included in the CD iso image.I suspect PyAROS was simply broken off the AROS project into it's own project for a number of reasons, like licensing differences, as a starting point or message for not needing to include AROS application software, ports, etc. in the main distribution. Sending the message that software developers need not have to coordinate with the AROS team..It would have been a little helpful to have known PyAROS wasn't included. But the AROS CD image D/L was smaller because if it.

Dethrone linux.....:) not likely, least not before the Hurd does, and given what the Hurd is, it's probably a more productive direction to consider using AROS as a user space OS to interface with the Hurd and such GNU resources.(no reason to reinvent the wheel, but making it easier to use.....)

Upon closer inspection, you are right the Business cards do only hold 50meg!!! but that is still more than enough for the whole AROS project including all the contributed software.

When Amiga Inc. and Genesi are gone and forgotten, AROS will still move on and on and on...:-)

That may well be true.

But I think that both AmigaOS4 and MorphOS are really interesting projects and look forward to seeing how they develop! And wish them as much sucess as I wish upon AROS.
