Knights & Merchants Demo for MorphOS is available
A 14 MByte demoversion of RTS Knights & Merchants for MorphOS is now available from the download area of our homepage. The demo lets you play around with the in-game tutorial that takes you through the building process of your town. In addition you can command some troops around the map to see who is there. The full version, which comes in 4 different languages (english, german, french and spanish) is available now and requires a Pegasos and MorphOS 1.0.

I just tried out the demo, great to see stuff coming out. It looks like a fun game. Keep up the good work.
Time to go order my copy.

Got mine since last Wednesday, ah the benefits of preorder.....
I even saved 2 Euro and shipping *g*, but now I have to write that review
I promised for morphzone.org (oh what have I done) ....

Have "allready" finished the tuturial and the 1st mission, and sofar it seems
to be quite o.k. for a beginner in those kind of games (like me). Mission 2
seems a bit harder.

More later this week.

Is the demo version running on MorphOS public beta ?

The full versions runs only on the Peg so it should be the same for the demo.

Since I've got my Pegasos, I bought more games than in several years
before together... :-) (No, I'm not pirating, I'm just not interested
in games usually.) But despite this I like K&M, I think one does
nothing wrong by buying it.

So, Kronos, you've finished the first mission already? Very good -
could you please tell me then where on that small island where you
start (or close to it) I can find iron or gold...? :-)

Nowhere ......

I asked the same questions here:

The metals are just not needed in the early missions.

@Kronos

Huh? Then I wonder how I should beat the other armies, just with the initial soldiers and then only lots of archers... - But thank you for the answer and the URL, I'll have a look there. Thanks!

Well... I tried K&M on BlizzardPPC to see if it runs (MOS 1.2).
Basicly the game worked but it was too slow to play it - sth around 1/2 fps ;)

@EPIC
You did a really great job! Thank you :)

On a CyberStormPPC, it's quite slow as well, but playable (i guess that with many units on screen, it won't be better). That's why they have written 'pegasos only' i suppose. :)Otherwise it seems nice. And it's also nice to have an original game.

It was a joke, to see what kind of response I'd get.

But on a more serious note, this kind of practice will probably continue in the future. Wipeout 2097, Heretic II and Shogo have all been pirated, as have apps such as Pagestream and photogenics despite users having paid may hundreds of pounds/dollars/euro's to run this software

Some people would rather have a free download than pay for software.

This is one of the many things that has to be overcome by both MorphOS
and AmigaOS if they are to become a success in the future.

You know what gets me? Not the fact that we get shamelessly old ports, but that we actually get all excited about has-been titles that were flops on the PeeCee platform anyway.

Pffft how sad.

I agree, i recently purchased Knights & Merchants for windows and it was only 1.50 GBP (2.70 USD) NEW, so this game must be a really old game to be sold at such a low price but anyway the old 1990s ports will continue because no serious game developers would touch the Amiga/Pegasos with a bargepole anymore.

I don't see how the age of a game really
effects the quality of gameplay or fun. There
are plenty of older games that are still great
to play and if released today would be as
entertaining as ever. I think it is more important
to look at the game itself and not judge by the
year or system requirements/specs etc. It's a
*new* game for MorphOS/Amiga users and that's all
that really counts, it's up to the player to decide
what game suits his tastes though...

I Wholeheartedly agree.

Knights&Merchants is definitely not the average strategy game but actually seems to be quite a rare subcategory of this genre. It seems actually more a "The Settlers"-like (with some realtime fights). As such it may not have had the attention it deserved in the PC world...

Old ports (not too old :) are OK as long as good games in their genre are selected. If we look at another game released recently, Crossfire 2, which is not a port, it's definitely very good in its genre, though it could have been released years ago if we look at its system requirements. (aga, 320x256, 030)

But I still hope the market will become a bit more viable so that we can see more modern ports / original games...

I have nothing against people porting old has been games to the Amiga/pegasos but to get the Amiga/pegasos noticed by serious people and not die hards you need a top quality fresh game at least to make it stand out from the rest.

Do you have any idea how much money will be involved in realizing a game that can seriously compete with releases on the major platforms such as PC, X Box or PS/2? Why do you think there is no commercial Mac-only development happening? And the Mac Market is 15-20 times the size of the current Amiga market.

Age of games are not very important as long as they are fun to play IMO.

I am still playing Starcraft on the PC from time to time with some friends. Great fun when playing over a LAN. It's old, but none of us cares.

"I have nothing against people porting old has been games to the Amiga/pegasos but to get the Amiga/pegasos noticed by serious people and not die hards you need a top quality fresh game at least to make it stand out from the rest."

Today, the average development costs of a decent full-price PC game is somewhere near 2 million EUR and above. Let me give you a few examples...

* Anno1503 (Colonization-type of game) -> 3 million EUR
* The Getaway (Sony's remake attempt to clone GTA3) -> 8 million EUR
* Shen Mue (probably Sega's most expensive marketing activity for the Dreamcast) -> 100 million EUR

There is no way to recoup even just *1* million EUR of investment on PEGASOS/Amiga. Even 250,000EUR will be impossible for a loooong time to come. People have to realize that they can either get ports of "old" games or no games at all. New original and *competitive* Amiga/MorphOS-only games are totally out of the question, at least when the desktop market is concerned.

well it could be possible if we sell like 5000-15000 copies of every game, by that i mean get ports and new games projects , JC and TS are making ports and expect to sell 300 - 500 copies, i hope they sell ALOT better now that pegasos is out, when a1 + os4 is out i hope amiga atleast have established an 2000+ copies sold per game state , if not....it will be very hard to get any new products. ;((

epic have released K&M,Birdyshoot, feeble, earth 2140,simon II etc and i dont see anything wrong with theese ports, i have enjoyed em all except for b.s and KM as i dont have a pegasos and i wont get one either, so be sure to get it out on OS4 also when it arrives or else...1 less copy sold anyway.

anyway start buying games and then u might get better games eventually (or games that u want) , i really want UT on amiga.... REALLY! , hopefully 1 day it will..

I have to say that I tried the demo on my Cyberstorm yesterday night and it ran quite well.
I don't know any other recent game of this kind that I can run on my Amiga.
I'am not a big game player but I have to say that I enjoyed playing the demo.
Of course State of the art Game would be good but it is a chicken and egg situation. If we want state of the art game we need more users, to get more users we need have as many software as possible available. I hope that the STB deals will permit company such as Epic to grow and produce/port more games.

Thanks for Epic, we appreciate your work.

These figures are highly unrealistic. Even five years ago, only very few Amiga games were sold that often. And the Amiga market was *far*, *far* bigger back then. (There were still plenty of professional Amiga magazines around with tens of thousands of readers.)

Also, 5,000 sold copies are simply not enough if you want to recoup license costs for a triple-A title such as Max Payne (please no discussion about the quality of that game, it is just an example for an absolute TOPSELLER).

well if u read what i wrote before u answer u would have understood what you are saying is exactly what i am saying also , anyway i was aiming into the future and not now where 10-100 copies sell , and 300 - 500 to be a hit.

i think it wont be unrealistic with 5000+ users after 1 year or so os a1/pegasos (WITH OS!!) , but the problem is pIRACY and actually people who wants to buy GAMES , gamers normally sit with their console....

if we cant get 5000 users 1 year after the release of the new hw + os (both systems) then there is no point in aiming for later games/apps/progs releases now is there???

also magazines what you mentions, well if there WAS 1 major mag then it would help, now its just 4-5 small ones and in foreign language , i dont buy german mags and i certanly doesnt buy a CDROM mag anyway i have no idea how many subscribers there is to all the magazines out there atm , but i would guess the lowst is under 40 copies each number and the highest is MAYBE over 200..

Actually its bugged to hell and doesnt work properly on my PC (graphics corruption) so I binned it (not worth sending it back as postage would have been 4 times more than the game cost)

Expecting to sell 5000 to 15000 copies of a PEGASOS/AmigaOne game in the next _two years_ is totally unrealistic.

"but i would guess the lowst is under 40 copies each number and the highest is MAYBE over 200.."

The biggest German Amiga magazine has several thousand subscribers.

Simon2 and Feeble both suffered this issue, as well as refusing to work on Windows 2000. One of the things I always do when converting the older games is fix up the bad code that causes problems like this. In the case of Simon2/Feeble, and probably Alien Nations, it's probably down to poor use of DirectDraw.
