Good news... screenshots of the new GUI would be nice to see though. A snippet for us poor, deprived, Amigans and wanna-be Amigans.

I'm not so sure if this is good news. In fact, I find it rather worrying that in 03/2003, news from AOS4 still hasn't left the domain of the BIOS. To me, such news, as good as it may be in its context, adds three questions marks to the (non-disclosed) overall project state. I'd much rather see them get exited about the first boot on an AOS4 into a graphical PPC-native user interface.

Haven't you read before. Hyperion cannot devote 100% of their time to AOS 4.0, else they cannot afford to develope AOS 4.0 at all !!! They need to do contract work for Mac & Linux else, there's no money to pay the developers.
Be patient!!
Or do you have a million bucks to spare, or two ? ;)

Dunno if it's been said here on ANN before but an interesting comment was made on moobynny awhile ago.

"
It's called Spoiling. It only works on the credulous, but unfortunately the computer industry's customers in general and Amigans particularly are rather prone to be credulous about technology.

In Spoiling the objective is to prevent customers from choosing a competitor product by presenting the illusion that you will have something even better to offer them soon. You make announcements at regular intervals. In each subsequent announcement there should be an apology (for not delivering earlier) a hint of improvement (more features, cheaper, faster) and a slightly delayed schedule.

Spoiling is related to FUD, in that the objective is to retain the status quo by paralysing rational thought. You want victims to put off purchase decisions indefinitely, because they're worried that they'll do the wrong thing. In fact spoling can even help sales for a poor product because some people, after waiting years for a product, will buy it even if told by a reliable source that it's no good -- they don't want to accept that their time was wasted.

Microsoft engaged in heavy spoiling for Windows 1.0 (needed to prevent developers from buying Macs and giving Apple a head start) and for W2K (to prevent companies from moving their File & Print to Novell or Linux)"

That's indeed what people are overlooking here in most cases!!

Bills have to be paid and so do the programmers. So sometimes, Hyperion as to do other work just to be able to continue with this venture.

But it's so much easier ignoring that fact and demand unrealistic expectations.

Also note that development has not been started all that long ago and that it's not a straight port. New stuff has been added.

Hyperion are paid by MAI to develop the Firmware - doing them is bringing in real money into Hyperion.

Also, this is a hardware thing, not an OS thing. This is to ensure that the AmigaOne XE's work fully and correctly, and hence the Teron motherboards, and other MAI licensees that need a Firmware.

I think this kind of FUD called 'spoiling' can be applied to ANY company. The only way to differentiate between 'spoiling' and proper advertisement is the credibility of the company that makes the announcement, and the reliability of previous announcements.

The answer is yes to all your questions. However, it took six months to do a bios?

My take on this is that hyperion seems hardly able to keep up with even the slow moving PPC market. I guess many people would rather see Mpc7457/55 support?

Since when did it do 6 months to do the BIOS?

Hyperion did the BIOS for the original AmigaOne G3SE last year. This was done for MAI, who paid for it.

Then they upgraded it for the G4 later on. I imagine that MAI also paid for this to be done.

I expect that later this year, MAI will pay Hyperion to upgrade it for the Artica P chipset.

..huh?? They arent just doing the BIOS.

the number of people who think that they're working in some serial
method...ie code the BIOS...now code the OS...makes me cringe
with worry about intelligence around here!

The OS is being worked on in parallel. lots of code is being converted from strange (and only just working - sometimes WAY OFF from the documented features)
aseembler into portable and GCC compilable C. porting isnt too long...its
the strange bugs that are uncovered when the new stuff is compiled (anyone
whos used to this stage will know) that takes the most time.

If things had been sorted out sooner (licences etc) then we'd have easily been running OS 4.x for christmas last year. with all the other distractions and problems its incredible that things are still fairly on track and the whole thing is running on an even keel!

What makes me cringe (with disgust) is people who intentionally turn valid comments upside down to suit their purposes. Nobody here claimed that they use a "serial" development model, you just pulled that out of your head.

However, it was rightfully pointed out that for many months now solid progress reports for the AOS4 project are outstanding. Instead, solid progress reports are provided for side issues, such as firmware or a boot screen or configurability of Intuition elements. In the best case, this is inept communication on part of the AOS4 development team (inept because it projects the image of very limited progress in narrowly defined areas). In the worst case, it means that they can't afford to report the overall progress - what percentage of the OS is now PPC-native and under final testing - because getting the truth out would be damaging to their interests. It appears as if Hyperion is between a rock and a hard place:

1. they face Amiga users demanding progress reports and have Eyetech in their back with conflicting commercial interests: selling boards. It's not good for selling boards to say "AOS4 is ready in four months, knock on wood": No sane person would buy another board during the next four month.

2. they face stiff competition from Genesi who seem to have a a big war chest AND a working 100% PPC-native OS, which, if I may say, is very good (I might pay that same compliment to AOS4, when ready, I'm not fanatically pro-Morphos).

I would have thought that Kickstart would be a more sensible name for the firmware of an Amiga-branded computer. It sounds better than PPCboot or U-boot, too (though U-boot is a bit clever =).
OTOH, I suppose that the Kickstart name might be kept for the dongle chip. ;-)

1) I've bought a motherboard (not only as part of an A500, A1200) but also
a seperate board with rev 2B fixes

2) I've updated firmware on my Amiga. I guess you've not invested in new Amiga hardware for quite some time - otherwise you would have too - eg PowerUP cards

3) I've also updated the BIOS. but not with some free upgrade tool - i had to go out and buy OS 3.1 ROMS . not cheap either

Note that even the mainstream ASUS and MSI X86 motherboard manufactures has to continually develop and improve their BIOSes.

For example; ASUS nForce 2’s release BIOS started from 1001C, 1001D ... 1001G to the latest release of 1002.

It has been said several times by AInc and Hyperion that it
will be very similar to Workbench+VisualPrefs. Most Amigans
know what that looks like so there is no rush to produce
screenshots. I just want to know when it will be available.

Well, it's the best mechanism to get people to look at the projects homepage, since too many of the fans here have forgotten that your company is just a component in a larger org, in this case.

Been looking at the patched that the Frieden's have submitted in the code (3-months old now) and have to say very good work. Smart design indeed.

Well, the "graphical menu" in this case has the words "by hyperion" stamped all over it, so I _really_ doubt you would be ANY wiser looking at the ppcboot project list for screenshots of it.

And do note that we're talking a la PC BIOS graphics (at least on my version which I've been running since January), not Amiga graphics. Still, it's a SERIOUS improvement over the standard ppcboot text interface. And I feel it deserves to be called a GUI even if the building blocks is rather large (no pixel-based but char-based) and the input method is only arrow keys (not mouse). It's not text-in-text-out like it used to be, and that should be enough for now :-)

It makes everything a lot easier to work with. Thank you, Hyperion :-)

What was in the Kickstart ROM in real Amigas is now divided into two parts: the boot code is OS-neutral and mostly concerned with direct hardware control, while other code that is AmigaOS specific will be with the rest of the OS and will not run when you boot into Linux (or other OSes in the future).
