In reply to Comment 49 (Ole-Egil):
"And I feel it deserves to be called a GUI even if the building blocks is rather large (no pixel-based but char-based) and the input method is only arrow keys (not mouse)."

You definitely do not want mouse input in a BIOS equivalent. There may not be a mouse connected when you are using it. A BIOS should work with just about everything that can be removed from the computer removed - including all drives, USB peripherals, etc.

This is because you need it to work when you are repairing or assembling a computer.

It probably has something todo with timing, initialisation or some use of registers in a specific order at a specific time!!

Needles to say; if that code isn't available it won't work!!

It's quite common that a BIOS doesn't immediatly support everything. The MSI K7T Turbo motherboard allready sold millions before they added DIMM bank interleaving for an added boost in RAM speed!!

Needles to say also is that a BIOS is an important part of a system and it's good it's being enhanced in every possible way allthough there are a few people (in these forums also) that don't think so. But these people are just loud mouths. It's very easy to write before you think.

Having mouse support is not bad either. Not everyone have keyboard connected, right?

In reply to Comment 38 (Nate Downes):
looking at the sourcecode it appears that theres just some refresh/burst settings to be changed to allow non-EEC memory to be in both slots - looks like theres
a register setting in the Articia chipset (and documented in their data handbook)
which allows for this. so its not a hardware issue, just a configuration issue
(which could have been done more expensively with jumper on the motherboard 8-| )

And how would you expect them to change parameters without a keyboard? Virtual keyboard where you click on the letters with a mouse? Too long and boring.

Do you know this word: GUI?!

Maybe Hyperion firmware doesnt offer GUI (i dont know, i havent seen, i dont care) but GUI is what we want.

> So what is this? second time Hyperion finished the firmware?

If you had paid attention, you would have noticed that the first one was for the SE and the new one is for the XE. More CPU support means you have to invest additional time.

But according to your description of Amiga users in comment #9, we are probably too stupid to understand that, right?

Itix: It's text mode thingy, only.. Apparently similar to many current Bios:es. IMHO calling it GUI is quite misleading ans ounds more marketting speech than engineers word. Ok, it has user interace ans it uses colours and graphics characters but it's far from what people these days associate to word GUI.

In reply to Comment 58 (JoannaK):
well its all up for a debate isnt it, what 'constitutes' a proper GUI. everyone has their own definitions, and mine is an interface with windows, icons, menu system, and a pointer (WIMP)

now thats clear, can a text display be called a window? yes. can a pointer be a movable by keys cursor? yes, and so on.

its up to everyone to use it and decide if they feel confortable to call it a GUI, but in the meantime i will go with what HJF called seeing as he made it. its just curtosy to the programmer.

Well, Hyperion didn't use W.I.M.P. (a.k.a. Windows, Icons, Menus and Pointers)....

Are you sure about that in regards to "we"?

Some PCPartner motherboards do have a WIMP GUI X86 BIOS btw and it didn’t change its fortunes against the likes of MSI, Epox, ASUS, ASRock, GigaBtye, Intel, AMD, Supermicro, Abit, Aopen and ‘etc’.

In my POV, I would like X86 ASUS style over-clocking features on A1.

It's not a word, little one, it's an acronym (now go look in the dictionary)
And I have yet to see a Bios with a mouse based GUI

Cause you ain't lived long enough... :)

There were some years ago.. They went out of fashion after couple years. I think it's mostly due differenceis on Graphics cards.. It's safer to make configuring on text mode as that's more likely to work on ALL systems/configs.
