Well, since at Amiga-News.de there's currently still just the german version (plus photos) online yet of the short report I wrote early this morning, I'm posting now the english version here, too. CeBIT - First impressions

Genesi's first attendance at the CeBIT takes place at the booth of Plexuscom - whereas the latter will be Genesi's guest at CeBIT Australia in return.

Demonstrated are Pegasos-computers running MorphOS, a separate further Pegasos-board and prototypes of small cases suitable for example for the Psylent home-server or high-end "settopboxes" (in opposite to the even smaller, simpler DTV-STBs).

One of the Pegasos-computers has the prototype of a case which has been shown at the ARC in Aachen already: here the microATX board is mounted behind the flatscreen directly, with the CD-drive and the USB front connectors placed into the pedestal.

Small new features of MorphOS (compared to the latest update on the FTP-server) shown at CeBIT are the option for transparent menus and a graphical enhancement of the Preferences-editor.

Among other software, internet-applications, multimedia stuff and some emulators are shown on MorphOS, for example Bochs, running Windows 95 on this G3/600-Pegasos in a window on top of Ambient.

New press-releases weren't published at CeBIT, at least at the first day of the fair, but it has been confirmed that the long expected Articia-northbridges from Mai finally are on their way to Genesi now, so that the final units of Pegasos-I-boards are going into production very soon now. Furthermore Arend-Paul Spijkerman has been hired by Genesi now, the developer of Mediapoint. This software, combined with the Pegasos and MorphOS, opens a further market for Genesi, and Ron van Herk hopes to demonstrate a corresponding product already at CeBIT Australia. Regarding the Pegasos-II, however, there were no new official statements yet, but Genesi seems to be quite confident that its development might be finished even sooner than expected.

And last but not least also TV visited Genesi: Ralph Benz ("Neues...", ZDF/3sat) informed himself on wednesday about the current state of Pegasos & MorphOS and will return with his camera team at the second day of the fair.

cool, running windows 95 in an emulator inside an amiga api emulator :)

anyways, how is the x86 speed produced with a g3/600 ? usable for x86 emulation?....could be useful for 'that needed app' thats only available for
x86...

In reply to Comment 2 (catohagen):
I wanna know this one too. How fast is Bochs on 600mhz G3? is it useable for normal apps, and might it even run quake? (quake can be made to run on Pentium 60mhz, so only 1/10 the native speed would be needed (if going by mhz)).

Someone give a freaking hint at how fast this is :-)

In reply to Comment 3 (Lasse Bodilsen):
The current version of Bochs emulates the whole x86 box, sound card, graphics, PCI bus etc, so is veeeerrrryyy slow (approx.15-20Mhz pentium on G3-600). Like Amithlon etc, it would benefit from some major twiddling, eg retargetting video/sound to native APIs, thus lifting the burden of emulation.

NB. The above is based on my experience of the Linux version of Bochs - see the Amiga.org thread on this subject a while back. There may have been changes to the MorphOS version, I dunno.

This is great news! I hope we will be getting better images of the flatscreen/micro ATX board and the various case designs. The photos wet the appetite, but they aren't suitable for publication.

I'am very glad that the mediapoint author has been hired.
It is a key application and we need to get some.

IIRC: Eclipsis (prototype) was to be shown at Cebit.
How well is the Eclipsis prototype working?
Is there any picture of it available?

How fast is the Bosch & windows?
Pentium 200Mhz speed on G3 @ 600mhz or slower?

Bochs is a hardware emulation primarily useful for e.g. OS developers. While it has seen some speedups with the v2 release, don't expect anything that could serve as a x86 PC replacement. Bochs is of the same family as PC-Task and UAE, it's not playing in the Wine / Shapeshifter league.

But UAE is very usable for occastional Amiga application running needs.
I would like to see something similar for windows apps for my next hobby computer.

samface, Alkis Tsapanidis (and probably a few others): Please stop the kindergarten fights. Several of you guys already managed to ruin a perfectly fine news item today, don't repeat it on here. I don't want to hear who started it, I don't care who's blaming who for whatever, I just want you to stop these petty fights on ANN.lu. Take it to email, or better yet, just agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Let me provide some MOS bochs info to you all.. The speed of bochs 2.0.2 is much better as the v1 versions. There is no JIT a like emulation, same as not using PC_Taskdynamic version on a 68k, only much faster i must say... :)You shouldn't wanne play 3D games with the current bochs, but using Word, Exel, .. is no problem.Network isn't supported for MOS ATM, otherwise i could imagineIE or lot's of fun fileshare apps to run on it too. :)So far i got Win311/95/98 working with bochs, without any realproblems..The speed overal is not very fast, but the mouse goes smooth aftersetting the right timing value's in the config, and i experience itto be a bit faster then pctask_dynamic on a fast 68k, but much morecompatible then pctask.:)Bye.

don't put any blame here, usally some anon asshole put a ugly little comment
about wither OS4 or MOS in a thread, and just waits for the fight to start.

I doubt the fights will ever end, but maybe an agreement could be made between
all the MOS / AOS people ?
Just ignore the anonymous flamebaits...if someone are so bloody boneless and cant stick his name with the words says, he's not worth starting a huge thread
for..

what do you think ?

I've tested Bochs' speed here on CeBIT today: about 80 s to boot into
Win 95, and about 20 s to start Word. See also Amiga-News.de for
screenshots.

It think emulation is an under-appreciated factor in platform choice. Having limited use of all your software is better than letting it collect dust.

There is no doubt that Shapeshifter/Fusion gave the original Amiga a more staying power. It probably would have been better to emphasisee the fact that Amiga was better at Mac than Mac.
Fusion faded because of the high price, low spec Amiga upgrades. With AOne + Pegasos we should be able to use it as a selling point again.
Only trouble is: The people we are trying to attract are likely to be PC users.

We have a great wealth of emulators and I hope to see more (better, faster) ones in future.
