Review of Pegasos and MorphOS : Comment 2 of 18ANN.lu

Funny Intro!!!

"Translation of something from a different language, for a different audiance always results in a slight chance in the content. Lack of common ground, as it's the case with Susu, the dragon, who had only one head, ate pears growing in the wilderness, and always chased a butterfly renders his appearance pretty hard to understand, as it happens to many other elements, which are pretty much tied to the Hungarian cultural environment. They simply vanish or change - and in addition, the article changed it's tone towards a less personal approach. My english knowledge - it's limits, to be precise - is another factor. I express myself in different ways, at times I'm pretty much troubled how to get around the holes in my grammar or vocabulary - these all affect the article's final form."

nice details...

'Betatester II Quackstart Guide'
'Forth like interpreter'
'Thank god, we have to memorize only one line.'
'the documentation contains frightening examples:'
'"/duart@C0800A00/uart@1:19200,9600,8,1,N"'
'yet there are many things missing'
' in it's current form it's not more stable than the original'

I thought Morphos is here now and ready for grandma ? :)

In reply to Comment 3 (catohagen):
Hello,

This is not MorphOS. What you quote is the Firmware. Have you ever seen a grandma who understand everything in a BIOS/Firmware? I don't think so :)

Btw with auto-boot enabled, nobody have to take care of the firmware. ONly power users who are interested to it will. Just like on Mac (you can get the firmware here by pressing Apple + Alt + O + F. He working very similarly to the Pegasos OpenFirmware (because they both share the same standard) ) or PC (usually you get the BIOS setup by pressing Del here.)

Regards

In reply to Comment 4 (Frodon):
ok, you're right...I saw it as something everyone needs to do first time
to get the system up, it it happends automaticly as you say, then its no
problem :)

the lines :
'yet there are many things missing'
' in it's current form it's not more stable than the original'

is however from the review...my point with the quoting is that i've been told
time after time after time, that ,Morphos is ready and here, and its not beta
and everyone can use it...but this review dont sounds like a product
ready for Joe Average User, it sounds like a tech/developers peoples machine.

In reply to Comment 5 (catohagen):
Yes. MorphOS is very cool and very stable in it's current form. It is not perfect and there is still some work to be done, but for Joe Everage it is more than enough.

>the lines :

And why don't you quote the whole sentence?

>'yet there are many things missing'

"(Two paragraphs down and then I found it. That´s why I told I will not talk
about these, as I´m pretty inexperienced ATM-Note)"

>' in it's current form it's not more stable than the original'

"Very fast, very nice, but we must not forget that it's still AmigaOS API
compatible, so no, in it's current form it's not more stable than the original"

Or sentences like:

"I came from a BVisionPPC system with a 060/50 CPU, and found 1.2 very fast.
(...) The programs are actually much faster than on my previous system even
with the static emulator."

am I the only one that sees this bit a little odd?

"It's not for the desires of a monster OS - it's intended for something which started it's carrier on a mere 7MHz M68000 CPU."

Now im sorry but MorphOS did NOT start its "carrier on a mere 7MHz 68000 CPU", AmigaOS DID.

I really do wish people would stop confusion the 2, they are completely different operating systems, written by different people. Okay so MorphOS has a similar API and can emulate the 68k instruction set but that does not mean it magically becomes AmigaOS.

It has been said by Genesi that current MOS&Peg is for "advanced users".
End of THAT discussion, I hope.

In reply to Comment 8 (Ryu):
Sure. The author refers several times to the fact that OS4 & MOS are different systems... However when you use MOS you have the feeling of using a new AmigaOS, even if it's just an Amiga-compatible OS !

The current version of MorphOS requires in my opinion the same level of competence as current Amigas : that's to say it's simple but you may have to do a few things by hand. (copying libs...) Anyway, the average Joe user will never be interested in this ! (well, maybe in a few years)

As for the smart firmware, usually you just have to touch it once and you can forget it. I didn't have to touch it as it was preconfigured on my system.

Catohagen: why do you quote things out of context ? ;)

@catohagen:

catohagen quoted:

"'yet there are many things missing'
' in it's current form it's not more stable than the original'"

1st point: those things are usually missing only for an Amiga user. There is room to improve, yet even in the worst cases it offers the minimum you'd expect from an OS. In other cases it's far superior to the original.

2nd point: the same will be the case (as I understand) with OS4... That's what comes from AmigaOS API compatibility.

I'm looking forward to OS4 though, I'd like to see that as well. What I saw and experienced from MOS was very impressive.

I've made that translation partly on request, and partly because I've promised on Amiga.org to make a review when I receive my Pegasos. (A promise I've made when Coder made his review on the AmigaONE)
English is not my first language, and the original article was in hungarian. And even if I was most probably unable to, I tried to remain unbiased.
Not an easy job, owning only a Pegasos and knowing only rumors about OS4...

Never the less, the article was my personal impression and opinion, many may like MOS more than me, and just as well many may dislike it. That's why I finished it with suggesting for everyone to try it out and form an opinion then.
OS4 is promising, and I still have the feeling that it may well be more successfull. We'll see.

Sorry from those who felt offended from my poor english. Usually I'm rarely making english translation for articles.

Thank you for helping fight the battle against impersonators. Now we just need Ben Hermans, Bill McEwen and Fleecy Moss to sign up for "trusted user" status (and for the site admins to prevent anyone from posting with a Name that matches that of any trusted user) and impersonation should be down to zilch.

Ben Hermans has a trusted user password. Nobody at Amiga Inc. has expressed any interest in this so far. (And FWIW, BBRV mailed me, and I mailed Ben Hermans.)

BTW if you need to execute a lot of Open Firmware commands it's easier just to load it from a file (or just boot the file).
