The midnight racer is targeted for AmigaOS as well the article tells. Wonder if it will come to the Blizzard/Cyberstorm boards as well - the game didn't look that demanding hardware wise. Hope there will be a B/CPPC version.

Some reviews from people who actually had the misfortune to buy this Yet Another Cruddy Old LithTech Game:

Mindnight Racing is a terrible game (Score:5, Interesting)
by recap (209790) on 2003.04.23 5:02 (#5786757)
While it's nice to see Linux and even my old favorite Amiga OS get some new software Midnight Racing is a terrible game.

I picked it up for the equivalent of about $2.50 US and felt thoroughly ripped off. While the screenshots look fine it plays like it was written by someone who's never been in a car much less driven one! On the bright side the DVD style case could be reused after throwing the game out.

I hope their other titles are better but given Autobahn racing looks like it uses the same game engine I don't hold out much hope.

I distinctly remember three things about this awful game:

1) It didn't matter which track you drove, they were all exactly alike. Lengths varied, but if you've seen the screenshots on the website...well...that's it. That's all you will see throughout the entire game. A highway at night. No change of scenery whatsoever.

2) You steal the cars you drive. This is shown by means of a black screen...with some strange clickety-click sounds coming from the speakers...right.

3) Whilst racing your monstrous beastly eh...not quite ferrari, not quite lamborghini car down the highway, with the engine roaring...you could hear birds singing in the trees and you could hear crickets in the grass along the highway...
(Well...I think that's were they were hiding.. - maybe they were driving the other cars ;^)

Hmmm...indeed a very bad game. Had some issues with the graphics as well IIRC, the lights on the cars that came towards you would change colour at random. Or all the lights would just dissappear.
----------------------------

Whatever. What AmigaOS and Linux needs to ensure commercial success is another top-list title from Inca Gold's impressive catalogue: "Do You Know Jesus?" :=)

"Do You Know Jesus is a fun and fast paced game that entertains as it educates. With over 1500 questions covering both the Old and New Testaments, your knowledge of the Word of God is tested in new and challenging ways. Play with your family and friends in a rapid fire game show mode, or just play alone to gauge your command of God's living word. Never has so much fun delivered so much Kingdom value."

Will Hyperion add a God Mode cheat?

I have to admit that I haven't seen an IncaGold game worth bothering with yet. They've only managed to produce extremenly mediocre material so far.

This is no reflection on Hyperion or the stadard of their work, except in that the licenses are probably cheaper than those for real quality games.

Now, if anybody was to port Civ III, or Thief, Half-Life or DeusEx, then perhaps even though they are very old now that would bring some quality gaming to the Amiga. IncaGold? I'll pass, thank you.

Funny you should say that Bill, but I have the same opinion but kept my gob shut in case it upset any red trolls. ;-) I wouldn't be surprised if Hyperion spruced up the gameplay to make it approach top notch.

I would actually like to see more games from platforms like the Game Boy Advance come across to the Amiga platform for 040+ owners. These tend to use isometric 3d and 2d scrolling to good effect. For example the ports of Lord Of The Rings The Two Towers and Rogue Spear are particularly effective.

The tendancy towards 1stPP 3d games I find a bit boring these days and enjoy the accessibility that simplified game engines give ( maybe because they have to emphasise gameplay to keep your attention? ).

Though this agreement between Hyperion and IncaGold is really a great news, we must admit that this is miraculous to have such deals, regarding the state of the market.

Though we can say that this only concern 2nd category games, this is FAR better than nothing, and IIRC the last time we had a good car racing game on the Amiga must be when the Lotus Trilogy was released on CD32 !

We now have to wait and see how the game plays, maybe by downloading the demo on PC in a first time.

But definitely a good news for the Amiga lovers.

No, why should I?

I am merely speaking from the point of view of a gamer, with no red or blue preference in mind, and the reality is that from the gamer's perspective IncaGold games are not very good. As a gamer, I really don't care how much a game costs to license, only what it is like to play. Surely that is a gamer's only consideration?

@DaveP

> I wouldn't be surprised if Hyperion spruced up the gameplay to make it

I would. I doubt the license goes that far, and the truth is that these games are poor because of poor design, not poor implementation.

@Ben Yoris

Are games of this quality better than nothing? That depends on your perspective. If you buy the best games available for the platform then the answer might be "yes", but if you only buy games that are worth playing then the answer would have to be a resounding "no".

anyway if u consider wipeout 2097 as a drive em up, then ok...thats the best drive em up.... anyway i tested the demo of midnight racing and i must say...wow its good looking...but it didnt play well...handling was bad and so was the lifespan, hopefully some tweaks will be made here, anyway i hope hyperion still have that quality assurance on the stuff they release.

i dont have any doubts but i just wanted to make them aware that it wasnt as good that i had hoped for, but then again its a pc game :)

I'll be the first to confirm that age doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the game. Half-Life however is an impossibility (it's not as if we didn't try). DeusEx is IMO one of the best games in existance.

In the end, it's a matter of taste if you like IncaGold's games or not. You obviously don't, but that doesn't mean they are low quality.

Offer total freedom and realism as what comes to interacting with the world and the objects within and you really have what made Deus Ex great, atleast in principle. Ofcourse this is easy to say, but hey, it isn't that hard to do, what's hard is to create a convincing non-linear storyline which actually WORKS, and by storyline I mean the development of the plot, the variety of the
flow of game cutscene's. I know what would kill everything, but no-ones doing it.

thats why we started on wild flying instead, now we have 2 projects both is pretty much laid up and both is playable but wont be released for sure yet due to we lost motivation due to the vERY low sales expected.

a team of 15 people costs money to keep happy, easy as that....thats why we now are dooing gba and console versions of the games instead....well we are trying atleast...

lets just hope that our amiga future will wake up again...

Those were just meant to be examples of quality games, not suggestions. I realise licensing issues make porting some of them impossible.

> In the end, it's a matter of taste if you like IncaGold's games or not. You

I beg to differ with that premise. It suggests that all games are the same in terms of quality and that everything else is down to individual preference. That's like saying all books or all films are equally good.

I don't see things that way. For instance, I'm no fan of FPS games, and I must admit I rarely enjoy playing them, but I have enough perspective to be able to distinuguish between a quality FPS game and a turkey. The same goes for every other genre, whether it ranks high in my own preference list or not.

IncaGold games are not seen as mediocre because the people most vocal about them prefer other types of game. They are seen as mediocre because they're not very good. I don't expect anyone at IncaGold or Hyperion to agree, but then turkeys don't vote for Christmas. If I want to formulate an opinion on whether Windows is any good, I don't ask Microsoft.

Honestly, I failed to see IncaGold games rated AAA in the press.

BUT, the effort is noble and, must I repeat myself, it's IncaGold games or NothingAtAll games.

And I failed to see NothingAtAll games rated anywhere !

This is maybe a beginning. After those 2nd class ports, we may get the chance to see some killer games, but old ones, coming back to the Amiga. After all, Heretic II, Shogo and Freespace, the first Hyperion ports, weren't 2nd category games.
