John Block quotes aweb.sunsite.com: New packaged executables of AWeb 3.4 APL are now available! The program executable is the same as before, but are now a full package with plugins, transfer-animations, icon-sets and installers. Versions for 68020, 68030, 68040, 68060 and now also MorphOS are available here.

The MorphOS version is the one done by Mark Olsen, and is the same executable as was released in the beginning. It was packaged with an installer by us with his permission, and it will be distributed through aweb.sunsite.dk.
There may be functional difference between the 68k and the MorphOS version.

Yes.

Because the first steps towards a new version are very long, and as this is free-time work, and the programmers have only so much time to spare. A lot of people have also signed up, but only 3-4 of them are currently active.
Fabio Alemagna is also working hard on AROS, which makes his time with AWeb even more precious. :-)

"What is going on?"

Mainly the source code is being rewritten to be compilable with GCC. This makes it easy to port it natively to OS4, AROS and what other platforms may come in mind.
This should almost be completed now, so various bugfixes and a couple of very small new features (better caching, iconification) can be implemented. After that we may do another minor release, and then we may increase the release frequency.

its OpenSource now...so new developers are getting used to it.

its being worked over so it can compile with GCC. this takes time to fix the source...but then uncovers various issues and bugs.

The team have also wisely chosen to sort out the packaging details EARLY so all they have to do is drop new binaries into the archiving system when the time
comes.

I, for one, welcome our new Ant overlords.....

I read that they are implementing XHTML, but in a thread on ANN, Fabio refused to answer about that, and that CSS is still into the high seas...

Are you sure this new version is not a beta???

Sure, but CISC won't mind if I tell you a secret: it's a mess ;)

Anyway, the main executable and the preference program are already ported (the former by me, the latter by Ondrej Zima), and also a couple of plug-ins. I've also put the CVS in a better shape, making some new directories and organizing stuff better.

However, being also an active AROS developer and having to run my studies, all at the same time, doesn't leave much time left for other things... I'll try to focus on AWeb more in the next days, after my 3 exams :)

XHTML is in early discussion as well as CSS, but this is shaky ground because we're not 100% sure yet whether to keep the existing engine (limited functionality expansion but fast), write a new from scratch (takes time but would be best) or adopt an existing one (might be too heavy).
Some research points in the direction of going with a new engine that is easier to work on.

But we'll get back to this when we're ready.

The AWeb executable in the package should be the same as the first one, which formally was no beta version, but a quick adaption to the APL license.

May I suggest the KHTML engine?

It is fairly lightweight, under intense development at the moment, especially with it being used in Apple's Safari browser (Dave Hyatt & co are apparently feeding their changes/additions/bugfixes/etc back into the KHTML source), and it already supports a lot of the w3c standards.

We are in thread, so I must point about PHOENIX the light version of Mozilla without html compose plug-in and mail plug-in.

In its latter incarnation with its name changed (Phoenix name is proprietary)...

Sure it has still a big problem, the graphical engine GEKO, that seems hard to port into Amiga (as I heard about).

That would be an idea. Our first thought was to separate the GUI from the program and make a MUI version, so the user can freely choose between MUI/Zune and ReAction. This makes the AROS port easier as it would just use Zune.

We have to weigh that against a ReAction port to AROS. Which is easier to do?

Splitting the GUI into separate GUI
modules sounds like a good idea.
Then developing a MUI/Zune GUI module
would make it run on AROS.
