Beos, and NEWOS, are to be ported to Pegasos due to the efforts of former engineers of Be Inc. according to this news I have read on Czech Amiga News. Quoting from Czech Amiga news:
------------------------------
As announced at BeGeistert 010:
"A long time ago Be inc. shipped a Box with PowerPC processors. Later they abandoned the PowerPC in favour of the x86 CPUs.

Ex-Be inc. Kernel developer Travis Geiselbrecht is to port NewOS to the Pegasos motherboard.

Axel Dörfler is then to work with those changes and port OpenBeOS to Pegasos.

Whats the big deal about this?
Pegasos is a PowerPC motherboard, Be is going home!
More details of Pegasos along with resellers can be found here.
A G4 upgrade is planned for July. Later in the Year Pegasos 2 shall be launched with support for DDR RAM, 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports and support for G3 and G4 CPUs.
A dual G4 card is also under consideration."
---------------------------
End Quoting

And regarding first news about that at OSNEWS.

Quoting OSNWES:
-------------------
By Eugenia Loli-Queru - Posted on 2003-04-28 15:45:53

Nicholas Blachford from Genesi (also ex-Amiga, ex-BeOS developer) sent us in an announcement regarding the new Pegasos machines, the BeOS connection and the availability of NewOS for Pegasos.
-------------------
End Quoting

Enjoy it.

Ciao!

Already read about it some days ago (right after the BeGeistert 010)

Nice to see, that the Pegasos can make users of other niche systems
happy too! :-)

Yes, all this and more. At an übertopsekret muffin research kitchen lab hidden away behind a wall of Genesi and Phoenix NDAs SDAs PLRHs* (and other sundry threats of jargonese), a platoon of top gun gurus from other OS communities slave away, never to see daylight...

In the overall scope of Operating Systems simply do a search on google for "operating systems" and check out the links... ie. http://www.freeos.com/compare/ .... much found might not be up to date.... but the point is that there are many many OS's in development...

A matter of getting a realistic perspective in order to ..... well..., not get misguided in thought.

BeOS!=OpenBeOS
Also: OpenBeOS is not functional on any platform so I don't see how it can be ported... I guess only Pegasos makes it possible? ;-P

I'm actually kind of excited about the AROS part of this too. I didn't know for sure how or whether we could make this work to the benefit of everybody, but all the people involved seem to have real great 'tudes. So, let's see! : }

Funny fairy tale :-D
Think you^re kidding because of the fact, that this had been know for
quite a while now..well attentive Readers know, others will sooner or
later ;-)
Just good to see, that the BeCommunity very much likes this board. I
read a bit into Be news forums after the last BeGeistert and many ppl
were really "begeistert"
;-)

Hello,

@Mergol

I've seen OpenBeOS booting on an Intel PC during the BeGeistert last
week end. Ok for now they didn't have the GUI, but they show a simple
console based BeOS app running which used the BeOS threads mechanism.

So OpenBeOS is working already on Intel PCs, still far from a public
release, but we can show important progress regularly.

I think this might pull more users to the Pegasus,
what do you think, well maybe not after all how have the
disk-space to store all of this different operation systems?

How knows after ten years time they may have all the software they need to compete with AmigaOS and MorphOS, and then have the benefits of being multiform every one using there software, butt in the Short run there will be room for Amiga OS and Morph OS. I believe that Morph OS has an upper hand at the minuet not due to operating system it self butt, the fact that number of software titles all ready ported and the number of operating system that is or will be ported to the system gives good software availability compared with Amiga OS, how ever this may change as the Amiga OS is the real thing just like Coca Cola is, and Hyperion and AInc long time strategies may give Amiga OS what it need to compete as professional hobby operating system, the once to live that long will se, we all know one thing the Amiga market is not stabel in no way.

>I think this might pull more users to the Pegasus,

Thats the idea. It's a natural platform for OpenBeOS given that Be started on PPC based systems.

It may be an odd choice given it could potentially be a competitor to MorphOS but right now it's not much of a competitor and wont be anytime soon. However a Pegasos user running a different OS is still a Pegasos user.

Get a bigger HD - there are other OSs on the way!

Why are people porting another OS to this project?
Why dont they use the effort to port apps to MorphOS?
If they ever want people to use MorphOS, shouldnt they
start porting apps to their native OS?. Maybe a office
suite for starters?

Maybe because they have the desire to start a challenge...

;-)

No, sorry this is a joke, but think that Beos was originally written for PPC based machines.

Now there is only to do a little effort (the kernel and some adjustments to fit the Northbridge and southbridge chips) to let it run onto Pegasos.

Take care of the fact that Beos Inc. closed and that the project to be ported in reality is Open Beos, its open source incarnation.

P > Why dont they use the effort to port apps to MorphOS?

A good question, but we are talking of Beos fan supporters, not Morphos supportes.

They love their OS and the Pegasos Machine is for this people a chanche to let Beos live again and with the major features the original PPC Beos had.

The fact they can use Morphos together with Beos is a plus they can enjoy it too and produce some porting for it...
...BUT ONLY IF THEY LIKE IT...

P > If they ever want people to use MorphOS, shouldnt they

As I said before, we are talking about Beos supporters who want their OS let to run on a PPC machine.

Morphos supporters are porting quite well applications for their OS starting from the AmigaOS versions, and it is from that OS (Amiga OS) that Morphos take place and starts its own life...
...(having the consciousness that Morphos is a stand alone OS)...

P > Maybe a office suite for starters?

Morphos makers announced a big boundle to be sold with their OS.
Let's stay resting and see further...

Hello Raffaele,

I forgot about the software bundle they are going to anouce.

Now that I've thought some more, I think it would be nice to
have the PPC version of BeOS on the Pegasos. There are quite
a few apps for BeOS PPC that would be useful.

I was just concerned that if MorphOS is ever going to be a
mainstream OS, that most of the effort should be put toward
making more apps for it.

I'm really considering a pegasos2 when it comes out. I'm a Video
editor and I would love to have a dedicated machine to do my
audio stuff with Audio Labs ( I really dont like Cubase )

Have you tried the Open Source version of Bars & Pipes called:
Bars'n'pipes (or Barsnpipes -all together-) maintaned by Alfred J. Faust?

http://www.alfred-j-faust.de/download.html#BPNew

(a recent thread regarding it is on ANN:
http://www.ann.lu/comments2.cgi?view=1051874148&category=news&start=1&11
enjoy it)

I am curious to know if it is good as the old commercial program,

and mainly if it is good about timing precision (time base, etc.)
which gives that program very professional capabilities...

The fact that mr. Faust is attempting to port it to Morphos is quite another point in advantage of Morphos, but I think he will deserve a lot of help by other programmers to achieve that goal...
