MorphOS-News.de: The DemoScene@phinixi.com mailing list is open for business / Genesi sponsoring Demo Scene Online Party in Fall 2003. The Peagsos I is out to about 600 avid users now and things are starting to get whipped up for the introduction of the Pegasos II in September 2003. We have always had respect for true Demo Teams because of the way technical and creative skills are intertwined to produce unique results with a computer. We decided that to truly be a success the Pegasos and MorphOS needed to do their best to support the Scene. The Scene can bring things to the Pegasos that no one else can.

To that end we have decided to lend ten fully configured and loaded Pegasos machines to Demo Teams that have demonstrated past success and a desire to produce a demo with the Pegasos for a Demo Scene online Party to be sponsored by Genesi in the Fall of 2003. The Online DemoScene Gathering will be open for voting by all Pegasos owners only -- one Pegasos, one vote. First prize for the best Demo is 1000 Euros (and keep the Pegasos), second prize 750 Euros (and keep the Pegasos) and third prize 500 Euros (and keep the Pegasos!!!). For all teams that successfully present their demo they can keep their Pegasos ( :-D ). If they agree to produce another demo they will be lent a new G4 card with the same terms (and keep the card if they deliver the demo).

To be selected for the DemoScene special offer each Team must be screened and selected by the Phoenix DemoScene Executive Committee that is being lead by Mikko Virtanen aka Hooligan of Dual Crew-Shining. We will ask "Kiero" of the MadWizards, the winner of the Equinoxe DemoScene Competition and LoRD, of 4Mankind, the first Pegasos contest winner to also be on the committee.

We will develop a special section on the MorphZone to keep track of these special Demo Teams. All necessary documentation and support will be provided to the DemoSceneTeams.

Sincerely,
Raquel and Bill

First comment :)

This is cool -- just like the name suggests, these demos make
great demonstrations for showing off MOS at shows or even shops :)

Other than that, one would think that it's a higher priority
to bring first class applications to the MOS platform
instead of fancy demos... But of course, why not have both? :)

This is a fantastic initiative. Well done to Genesi for their support of this, very important (and often neglected) part of the community. How many people's favourite Amiga moment was the first time they watched a certain demo? Mine certainly was.

I think they are using demogroups to promote their hardware/os. That's about that respect. Why scene should bring something to Pegasos, it's up to sceners what they like to do on their favourite computer/os/console/etc.

Looks like the candyman is here again. offering free stuff when time is right.. In scene people like to do things with their hardware for pure pleasure, not for money. Democoders want to stretch their skills to the limits and show it to the world.

Amiga still has reputation as legendary demomachine, so i wonder how many people will choose pegasos as their demomachine? There have been long democompetitions separately for amiga and pc, but nowadays they are in same category.

True. But when company says "The Scene can bring things to the Pegasos that no one else can." it's abusing the scene for it's own profit.

>Are you against compos? Or are you only against prizes in compos?

Compos are great, but nowadays nobody releases demos without party.. and that's sad, I think.

Of course, they're trying to make the platform go ahead,

so "their" profit = platform profit = users' profit.

You're just saying that for the sake of criticizing genesi hopefully :)

Ok, first of all, this project started months ago. It has nothing to do with "time is right". There was queastions open about the issue, mainly how many Pegasos-systems would be lent etc. Buck doubled what I was asking and hoping for btw, so gotta respect the man who respects the demoscene.

>In scene people like to do things with their hardware for pure pleasure, not for money. Democoders want to stretch their skills to the limits and show it to the world.

That was ten years ago. It's time to wake up from the past. Democulture has changed and the scene has shrinken. Democoders have gotten older and some people are working fulltime as professionals in IT-industry and has no time unless it pays back.

Bill Buck and friends are doing what Amiga companies should have done a long time ago, simple as that.

Mr Sheen is a all purpose cleaning agent which is used worldwide for many tasks and a well loved and respected product.

Do you hate cleaning agents what claim to do one thing and does another?

Are you fed up of cleaning products what smear and leave streaks?

Do you need a product what you can trust?

Well fear not friends there is a product called Mr Sheen what will come to your aid every step of the way with its new formula and amazing cleaning power with breathtaking results.

Dont believe me? then check out this great review on the below site.

Since when.. For example Assembly 2001 winners (matureFurk) were actually same people who do their windowse benchmark for living?

And this time? Have you any idea how long this project has been going on? Just go and make a wild guess. I happen to have first hand info of this. :)

Well... Those categories were combined cause there were no more entries for Amiga. Not cause they had been so glorious. For example there were no full demo to Amig at Assy 2002, only some 4K intros (a good one that was).

But apparently some peopleare never happy. If they are not supported any way they moan (or live in old glorifies memories), and if someone offers sponsorship and new SW/SW platform to use they still moan and bitch.

I really don't know, but maybe not longer than this genesi vs. a inc. thing was born.

>Well... Those categories were combined cause there were no more entries for >Amiga. Not cause they had been so glorious. For example there were no full demo >to Amig at Assy 2002, only some 4K intros (a good one that was).

I know. It's really hard to qualify to screen, when there is 10 pc demos against 1 amigademo.

You didn't get the point, didn't you? Have sports become better when there's sponsoring included?

Of course, this is my opinion and we are here to discuss this, not to tell the absolute truth.

I just hope that, with the better hardware, faster cpu, better graphics, that the demos will not become a copy of pc demos and that they will retain something unique that is so special about 68k releases.

Here's hoping to some excellent demos!

@Hooligan:
Which groups have shown interest in the project?

> Have sports become better when there's sponsoring included?

Of course. Before the sponsoring era, people had to have daytime jobs to put food on the table, and then go out and practice the sport if there could find any spare time in the evenings. Today, people can completely focus on their sport, they can go to training camps, and they can buy state of the art equipment. The results improves. The public interests improves. Sponsoring is what make big competitions possible. World championships. Olympics. But kids can still play some soccer after school if the want, just for the fun. You can still run a marathon distance by yourself on a free weekend, just for the fun. But without sponsoring, this would be all that existed. No big competitions, poor results, and no public interest. Money is what makes the weels go around you know.

But the sponsoring of sports is a poor analogy to this situation anyway. Here Genesi simply lends some equipment to interested coders. They announce a competition. They sponsor the competition with some prizes. It's as simple as that. This is nothing new. There has allways been compos. Many compos have had some kind of prizes (other than just the honour). The only thing new here is that it's Genesi who is sponsoring it ...

Why? They hope to get some impressive demos which they can show to the world. Nothing odd with that. They hope to bring even more good coders to the platform. Gain momentum. Everyone will benefit from this. If you don't want to code on the Pegasos, participate in the competition, and if you don't want to try to win the prizes, then you don't have to. You can still "choose what you like to do on your favourite computer/os/console/etc", "do things with your hardware for pure pleasure, not for money", "stretch your skills to the limits and show it to the world", "release demos without party" all you like!

well..If you take a look for example (once again) Assembly.. (I know it's not the most pure happening but a Big one. For Example Alt-party takes totally different approach to this.. less serious and IMHO more interesting). Most Compos have been sponsored by big companies during last years.

One may ask, if it's good or not? Well at least some intererested coders get themselves a nice chance to get nearly free new computer. And if they are going to make some Demos anyhow, why not try something new for a change?

>>Well... Those categories were combined cause there were no more entries for >>Amiga. Not cause they had been so glorious. For example there were no full

And then that 1 Amigademo is played on way inferior system. Ok, in 10 years ago classic Amiga was great technology, but it should accept is age by now. I know people do Demos to systems like Vic (totally assom stuff can be archieved on unexpanded one),Mattel Intellivison, C64, Spectrum Etc.. Even thoughnew systems have come those are still in use. Perhaps not as muchas on their glory days, but there seems to be people to make things happen.

Well.. One has to live, one way or another. But I can't tell what this world would be if there were NO sposoring to any sports, world without any big paycheks or hefty worldwive television rights. A different place I think, better? That I can't say for sure but...

>Of course, this is my opinion and we are here to discuss this, not to

Yep.. I think it'll happening anyhow and IMHO Genesi makes quite clever move to join in.

Who cares? Really.

Well, evidently the sceners do because they are signing up like crazy. Something about getting free stuff like T-Shirts, getting support, and having a chance at winning stuff.

For every detractor here, there are 10 people who could give a crap about polemics and just want to have some fun, get some support, and have a shot at further ah, erm, infamy ; }

Genesi is doing it right. When BBRV and I and Hooligan talked about starting something like this we knew that groups would appreciate it. We also realized there would be some goofy "thoughts" posted on ANN about it. Fact is, Genesi moves - it took BBRV very little time to agree to put effort in this direction or in the AROS direction. Genesi is very responsive to what can be win/win situations and is willing to put finance and time and travel into making it so.

That's what a company is supposed to do when they say they care about Community. Has that somehow become an alien concept around here because of all the neglect, with mushroom growing taking its place?

there where time gap where Amiga demos where not keeping up whit the PC world.

Correct, someone is paying for the lunch and for a change, it's not the Community. Someone is actually giving a crap about the community for a change, instead of taking a crap *ON* the community. It's refreshing, it's how things are *suppost to be* and haven't for far too many years. It's high time the Community takes being treated fairly and *run* with it. We can rebuild the Community to where it once was, just takes people to do some work instead of bitching about being treated nicely for a change.
