Virtual Works, Soft 3 and Bitplane magazine are demoing Amiga One and Amiga OS 4 beta (68k) at the Webb.it show in Padua (Italy) An Amiga One XE G3 800Mhz with Debian Linux PPC and an Amiga 4000 with Os 4.0 beta are present and running at the booth of Virtual Works, Soft 3 and Bitplane. Also an ipaq with Amiga Anywhere is present and the last issue of Bitplane magazine is available. Attenders seems very interested about the Amiga One and the OS 4. Tomorrow Elena Novaretti will show her own Pegasos running MorphOS. We will release more info about the show progress (it will last until sunday) tomorrow.

Or is there actually anything new to show in the 68k version of OS4? (hint: everything shown before was just single modules, not a proper betaversion of the actual OS).

Just to be absolutely clear :

The way this is written, the AOne will not be running OS 4.0. If I am mistaken about this, please tell the world - it's a rare event, you know...

Do remember that it's not so hard to recompile those m68k modules to ppc code whet those modules are ready. When OS is written with C/C++ then it really is not so huge task. Because of endianess, it would be much bigger task to compile those for eg. x86.

Perhaps you could pre-empt a lot of silly arguments by posting a simple explanation of why OS4 is being demoed as 68K not PPC? Has anyone in the development team actually got anything running under PPC at all? Surely curiosity has compelled you to try...?

If this is how you Se it well then you should wait until there it sate where it can showing to the public,
the problem is that is repeated over and over again that AmigsOS3.9 runs on the new exec way don't you show this?

I can accept not being able to Se the new OS4.0 in action on Amiga One,
sines the modules where crated on OS3.9 and may be inconsistent withe new ExecSG,
I can accept that majority of developers have used Amiga4000 for long time and that AmigaOne
development is behind the Amiga400 development

I doubt that Hyperion would ever consider doing that on their own (lots of support issue with little or no financial gain).

However, some of those "useful 68k modules" were already licensed for Umilator, so they seem to be willing to license these modules to a third party, which could try to sell 68k builds in some form (and handle customer support).

The problem is that there probably is nobody willing to do that (IMHO). The only candidate I could imagine would be Cloanto.

Maybe, but first and foremost it's got something to do with that it is not an *OS* for 68k. It's some of the modules that will be inluded in OS 4.0 (not a "beta" of an "OS"). But as someone mentioned, selling those as a boing bag or "service pack" for Amiga users would be an idea. Of course, they'd have to make sure you bought new hardware at the same time from a certain dealer... Antipiracy, you know. Can't have people buying stuff, can we now.

bought many an amiga product and gotten no support at all, even when they sold it with support, some people evidentally don't feel any compulsion to even provide it...of course its better, if its not *planned* like that....a warning that its sold without support is sufficient and honest.

the other thing...I believe that they tell the truth about OS 4.0 getting closer and still being so buggy as not to be demonstratable on the AmigaONE.

this 68k stuff is non-news, to me...its not a product that will be ever sold, so it doesn't really show anything, except they are working on it. glad they are working on it.

wake me up when they are done, maybe amiwest? maybe....maybe not, but hopefully its getting closer.

I'm not especially excited at the moment but when they finally finish I will be rushing to read a review...or will it be under NDA even after its release, like AmigaDE SDK?

surely they won't sell it under NDA...but never know when Amiga, Inc. is involved...(even if only somewhat remotely involved)...

The largest part of betatesting actually takes places on 68k - well known environment with good tools for debugging. In theory any bug except kernel interaction on ppc can be caught at this stage (and most will).

So ... you could indeed call the current state "advanced beta testing".

I would definitely buy OS4 modules for m68k as well.

Especially, the new GUI and Media Toolbox would be
of interest. Why not throw in the latest AmiDock,
AmiPDF and DropArc & XAD.

This would make OS 3.9 a complete package again

And if the beta stage is so advanced why don't show the "so advanced beta testet ppc version" in all his glory and kill my frustation!
