Posted by Anonymous on 27-May-2003 07:52 GMT | "What are the big buzzwords in computers today in 2003?
Accelerated custom graphics chipsets, Multitasking, more colors, better sound, NTSC/PAL timing, command line with full color GUI,genlocking, video editing, 3D animation."
All the operating systems of any significance have been multi-tasking very effectively since last century. Few are interested in more than 24-bit color (you can't see more anyway). Only professional users are interested in further sound improvements, on a home system you can't hear more than 16bit @ 48kHz which is universally available. TV rate video sucks, not much we can do about it. Yes, all the significant operating systems include both a CLI and GUI, so what? They all support a 3 button mouse these days too. Genlocking is not a buzzword, even fansubbers are finally getting decent digital equipment and no longer needing it. Yes video editing is cool, it's not a big market driver on PCs though. 3D animation is strictly a niche market.
Some real buzzwords for the moment: Peer-to-peer (stuff like Zeroconf, Multicast, Distributed discovery), Wireless (Bluetooth, 802.11, Ad hoc networks), Persistent worlds... |

Quite a lot of private computer users have small home studios and record and mix their own music. A good sound card with 24/96 is well worth while for this.
There is no clear division between "professional" and "home" so far as music are concerned.
As for "more colours", again it is good to have more than 8 bits per channel when recording (on a scanner, for example). The more steps in the scale, the less will be lost in processing, as when adjusting gamma. The Kodak PhotoCD format is one example that is more than 8 bits per channel, to capture the full dynamic range of a photograph. |

I'm not a professional user and I am interested in sound improvements:)
Then again, there are not many that gave paid the earth for a VERY high clarity,
high end system. At least here, I can clearly make out that all MP3s at all
bitrates, SUCK :-) |
