A new version of AmigaDOS, they say. Is this something
else than the version by Thomas Richter? I thought the OS 3.9
was overly complicated. It should be cleaned up, and better
thought out.

Yes it does. If it helps in a shell windows type:

"ed s:shell-startup"

that should then load and open a window which should contain a version string and some "Alias" lines. Under one of these type:

Alias cd.. /
Alias del delete

Save the file, close ED. Close the shell you had open, then open another one.
You should now be able to type "cd.." to get to the parent directory, just like you do in MSDOS. You will also be able to delete things with the "del" command, also just like MSDOS.

Into Amiga simply you don't need "cd /" if you want...


From OS 2.0 version, you can call devices simply by typing their name or their logical name followed by ":"

Example type "HD0:" starting from any of its subdirectories

Geee... It is simple... Isn't it?

Just like in MS-DOS by typing "C:".

But into MS-DOS you can't reach root directory of C: by typing "C:" starting from any of its subdirectories...

You NEED to type "CD.."

AW! POOR LIDDLE MS-DOS!!!

Or for example try to name your Hard Disk "DonaldDuck"

or whatever name you prefer...

Then you can access it both by calling it "HD0: or DonaldDuck:

And if you prefer to use the name "C:"

as I STRONGLY THINK YOU ARE USING TO...

then you can ALIAS it "C:" and use this name in parallel with "HD0:" or "DonaldDuck:"

AAAMAZING ISN'T IT?

Hi!

Just wanted to point out that the link to Club Amiga Monthly took me strait in without login in... It only worked a while though.. Very intresting reading :)
But i would call that a serious hole that should be fixed.

There are people that have paid to read that.

No, you can just type "cd \" which is the same length (or simpler, no need for shift) as "hd0:"

There are no such restrictions on the Apple site. You can download even complete books of reference (similar to the RKM) for free.

Sites that charge are those like the Oxford Dictionary whose product is the online information itself.

My impression is that Amiga Inc don't care whether I buy an Amiga or not.

Well, his problem is that he wants it, but he wants it for free. The contradiction appears when he patronizingly refers to it as simple advertisment. There is journalistic as well as editiorial work behind it, there obviously is a demand for it, it makes perefect sense to take charge for it. If their intentions were to just advertise, I'm quite sure everyone would be able to access it without having to pay.

Well.. not exactly like that, but pcd is quite close :)
Equivalent example:

23.Ram Disk:> work:
23.Work:> games
23.Work:games> pcd ram:
23.Ram Disk:> pcd
23.Work:games>


And as you see, you don't have to use cd command if you don't want, just type the directory's name ;)

And one example of amiga's cd command:

23.Work:games> cd hb#?
23.Work:games/HBMonopoly>

So, you don't have to type long or difficult dirnames always ;)

And of course you can use several / characters to move up..

23.Work:games/HBMonopoly> //
23.Work:>

Certainly, Spamface.

MacOS X 10.2.6 was released (as a free update - none of this charging for minor updates a la AOS3.1 -> AOS3.5 -> AOS 3.9) a few weeks ago.

MacOS X 10.3 is coming along nicely, in beta. Watch for more news this month.

Actually those 10.2.x updates pretty much equal boing bags.
The 10.2.6 was mainly a fix for OpenGL problems and USB glitches and didn't add much else if anything.

10.0 had to be paid for.
10.0.x = similar to boing bags
10.1 was available for a symbolic amount
10.1.x = similar to boing bags
10.2 was buyware.
10.2.x = similar to boing bags
10.3 will be buyware.

Notice a pattern here? - except the higher frequency of releases obviously..

Check out the "PCD" command.

PCD
Like the CD command, the PCD script changes the current directory. However, PCD also remembers the directory from which you are changing, so you can return to it without entering the entire path. Each Shell has an independent PCD memory.

The first time you use PCD in a given Shell, you must give it the path to a directory. When entered with this path argument, PCD has the same effect as CD, changing to the named directory, but it also stores the path to the directory from which you changed. You can then change the current directory by the usual methods. To return to the initial directory, enter PCD alone. For example:

1.System:> PCD Work:Paint/24bit
1.Work:Paint/24bit> PCD
1.System:>

Subsequent invocations of PCD switch to the directory in which you last used PCD:

1.System:> PCD
1.Work:Paint/24bit> /
1.Work:Paint> PCD
1.System:>

PCD use the assign list to store the remembered directory. When you use PCD, the list contains the assignment from<n>, where <n> is the Shell number. Using PCD with no argument before establishing the first from directory produces an error requester.

Well, the up arrow key does the job for me if I want to repeat any action in shell such as accessing a previously accessed location. Most oftenly that means less key pressing than typing the name of the device.

Id say most infrequently actually. Most directories are navigated relatively, if you always navigate your directories absolutely then I think youd have a point. But then thats more typing in the first place....

And especially the shift-up key combination. You can enter some characters of the command and then it finds previous commands which begin with same chars. I wonder if any unix-shell has similar option.. it would be very handy with unix-style command history (saves them to disk).

Huh? ":" on its own is the AmigaOS symbol for the root directory. I don't have an Amiga here, but IIRC, just typing : gets you to the root, meaning that the original poster should be right.

Since McEwen lied about OS4.0 being on schedule and rockin', there have been multiple updates to MacOS X, both major new releases, and minor increments. Whereas there has been NOTHING at all from Amiga et al re AmigaOS.
