I should point out that the default look of OS 4 is only around 80% done but Massimo hopes to complete it in the course of the Tour.

The idea was to have a default look which is both instantly recognisable as "Amiga" and sufficiently modern.

Obviously the functionality now incorporated in Intuition could easily be put to use for more fanciful designs.

There's a new icon set?

In reply to the earlier comment: UK date. I tried to drum up some enthusiasm for organising one, but nothing seems to be happening. I would try to organise something myself but I'm a bit far away from any useful venues, and - as I wrote on amiga.org - couldn't organise different coloured shapes into the same coloured buckets, even if all the shapes are the same colour and there is only one bucket.

I offer to help but nobody seems interested. *shrug*

You mentioned on amiga.org once that you would like to demo OS 4.0 only when it was as stable as OS 3.9... has it reached that level of stability yet? Of course its only a matter of time before 99.9% of bugs are eliminated, but it would be interesting to hear how development is going currently.

well I agree the idea would make it to look as modern as possible but keep the

However, the problem would be that the Amiga look is a rather dated look, so if they keep it, it will look somewhat dated as well.

He said people may criticize for being too conservative....probably, this isn't an issue that can be won. My personal preference is they update it as much as possible.

Hyerion signed the agreement with Amiga in November of 2001.

That's not even 2 years.

Meanwhile all the functionality originally planned for 4.2 has been folded into 4.0.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BTW, what happened to 4.1? ;-)

BTW2, is Hyperion supposed to/allowed to develop the OS further than 4.0? Perhaps you contineu developing it as long as it's 4.x? Then I guess you could call the next release 4.00000001, the release after that 4.00000002, and so on!

Well, AFAIK Workbench will still only support 8-bit color icons,

Come to think of it, there is actually a icon set

They look very nice, have a look at this link:

"My personal preference is they update it as much as possible."

That doesn't mean much, though. There is more to good design than just imitating this month's fashions.

Important things in a good design are proportions, radii of curves, the way different parts of a shape (such as a window) logically relate to each other, detailing such as the precise shapes of tabs, - all fairly dry stuff.

One of the worst design points in Reaction is the broken line that surrounds a section of a requester window and _almost_ goes through the middle of the text naming the section. This is visually very clumsy. It would look much better if aligned with the baseline of the text, or completely enclosing it so that the name is inside the section area.

The other important thing is "product semantics" - the user should know what a control means from its appearance. A good one is the Windows button which shrinks the window down to the Task Bar. A bad example is the three little jellies on the OS X windows - they might do absolutely anything. Another is several identical butterflies in the toolbar of AmiNetRadio.

The rule should be that everything must work in any depth from 1-bit to 24-bit.

That has always been the rule for the Amiga GUI. You still need 1-bit as the OS may be used in embedded applications with a 1-bit LCD screen (eg typical audio gear).

Yes, there will be an OS 4.1 and 4.2 if I have something to say about it.

In fact, we have already drawn up a list of stuff we want for 4.1.

Obviously since most of the features originally planned for 4.2 were folded into 4.0, 4.2 will have more functionality yet again.

We have to be realistic here, barring some exceptions no indepth work on the OS was done since OS 3.0/3.1.

This leaves ample room for improvement.

@Ben H/Hyperion Ent.:

I'm getting way ahead of times now, but I'm just
curious:

For 4.1, will there be a revised printing system?
Wouldn't it be possible to just license the Turboprint
code and do a nice Reaction GUI for the prefs, implement
some kind of a standard Print requester (à la Windows)
and hey presto - wide support for a pretty wide range of
modern parallel and USB printers? That Turboprint is
backwards compatible to old Amiga apps doesn't hurt,
either.

Then again, you might opt for a totally different
solution, but this is just a thought.

I think its just the beggining. It's still only on classic Amigas. Even if they get rid of all hardware dependencies it will be first release of new os (its rewritten, so despite the name its like 1.0). Then evolution of that os STARTS.

I would prefer a conservative look as the default. Something that has the image of a professional, functional tool, not a games machine or a toy.

A GUI where every element has a clear function, there are few if any hidden controls, and it is as easy as possible to position the mouse on a control (Fitt's Law). That will help the machine to be fast and responsive in use.

Don't agree with you an the new look, they should replace the icons with some thing new, and support the old once at the same time.

Don't know what type of OS you are using, most new OS's are gray and boring, Amiga OS has some colors to it so I can't Se how it can be old?

default look for KDE3.x is aborning
default look for GNOME is bit better then KDE3.0
default look for BeOS is not modern (don't use modern cpu eating effects)
default look for WinXP is over done.
default look for MacOS is gray and boring,

default look for AmigaOS4.0 look like AmigaOS,
I like the new look, it new at the same time gives me the impression of knowing what it is. Not like Ambient that don't know how works or if every thing works as i expect them to work, they are porting 680x0 programs to PPC why not improve the looks / usage in the process?
