Very nice as a default. That looks like a GUI that I could live with and get some work done.

IMO at least as good as any Linux screens I've seen.

The Prefs requesters could be improved by setting a higher spacing in the Reaction Prefs - they look a bit cramped.

IMO the Gradient needs an option of RGB or HSV - usually HSV gives a nicer color range.

Looking good! I also like the fact that the lens "thingi" can sit on a dock bar, like an task bar applet in KDE or Windoze or something. Gradients at any possible angle as well..

Sorry but i don't see any work from a graphics artist here. Hope a lot changes in the last 20%. It looks dull, boring, cluttered,... And those glowicons don't really do it anymore for a modern OS design.

A big dissapointement, which ofcourse won't stop me buying it but a missed opportunity.

I think that is the former "Gateway-Amiga", as they still own the name and the IP. Amiga Inc. has only licensed the IP from Gateway.

I agree with you that the GUI of the Workbench program is not the most important thing. Workbench is not the whole of AmigaOS, it's just one program. However, it can help to sell the system if it looks good.

Aawwww, comments like that is so unnecessary. But pretty much what I expected from you.

OK, back on topic. I think that this default look is really dull. Functional, perhaps (the appearance of OS3.1 was functional too), but I would not call this good looking. It's dull, grey, dry and boring.

1) Could you please show us some of the other themes?

2) Could you please release a video, showing the OS and applications in action? This gives people a better feeling of how the OS "feels".

I must say I was a little disappointed at this. After all your talk about "you only get one chance to make a first impression", this is what you show us? Perhaps you should take a look at some of the "sandbox" screenshots ...

Well, I'm hoping that things will improve. Perhaps my "second impression" will be better ...

It looks good to me. :)

Of course the release of screenshots to show off the GUI is going to generate lots of discussions about the look of the GUI (duh!), but let's not forget that the point of OS4 is to get AmigaOS onto a PPC native machine. Provided it looks *reasonable* (and how many times have Hyperion told us it's reconfigurable?) then the artistic among us can do the colourful (and some would argue O.T.T.) designs and post them on Aminet as themes. OS4 is an OS, not a skin for WB.

Don't know if it's an artifact of a mock-image or a problem with the font system, but some icon text has the tails chopped. (eg "System" and "Expansion" in pic#3)

Looks to me like badly aligned icons. The icons below the system and expansion icons are overlapping them. Hopefully a `Clean Up` from the icon menu should sort that out.

Thanks to all of them.

Feature request - it would be useful to be able to set a different "System Default Font" for particular screens. I'm thinking of older programs which can be mode promoted but were designed to expect Topaz 8. You don't want to have to set the font to Topaz 8 for the whole system just so that a couple of programs can work.

(This is not an opening for comments from those who think using an older program is morally wrong.)

It's a conservative default but that's the intention: recognisable as Amiga yet still clean and sleek.

it can be customised quite extensively for people who like a more fancy design.

If I recall the fuss some people made about MUI gradients and anti-aliased fonts in the past ...

He isn't "just" one of the best Amiga journalists.

As a rule, I tend to favor people who actually know what they are talking about.

If you see what kind of considerations came into play when designing the current default appearance (colorblind people for instance), they you'd understand that there is more, much more to UI design than aesthetics.

Everyone knows the time estimates were way, way out. There's no need to go on and on about it.

What matters is that real progress is being made. A lot of people have been working very hard on this project, for little or no money. Some appreciation is in order rather than nagging.

Hey Ben, since you're replying here... I notice that the Shell window on one of the screenshots doesn't have a scroll bar. Is it possible to scroll back through the history on OS4 Shell? I've been using KingCON for years and I would really miss this feature (in fact, it is the only reason I bothered to reinstall KingCON when my HD crashed some time ago)

Console.device is in 68K ASM and we didn't have time to replace it with a new version which would also meet our other requirements.

The upside is that KingCON works fine under emulation.

But like I had said many times in the past, the delays were primarily due to insufficient funding which forced us to take on outside contract-work.

This in turn slowed down development.

Add to that the fact that we needed to duplicate all the 3.5-3.9 code which was unavailable to us and the fact that we initially considered a MorphOS like design but ended going for something more ambitious.

The upside is that OS 4.0 is now a much more complete package than originally envisaged.

I can understand your frustration but I dare say that under the circumstances we have not done such a bad job especially when you compare it to those other would-be saviours of the Amiga: VisCorp, Escom and Gateway.

"No chance, sorry. The "System Default Font" is a public pointer in the
public graphics.library base guaranteed to point to a struct TextFont
(or ColorTextFont or AATextFont) of a fixed-width font. Its initialized
by graphics at boot time with topaz 9 (not 8!), I suspect intuition does
something with it later so topaz 8 becomes the default system font, and
then IPrefs sets it to the fixed-width font specified with Prefs/Font.

Requesting different GfxBase structures for different screens does not
